  1. Hi,

So the dam is chockers, and last week released bout 350 yabbies into the dam and has good aquatic insects as well.

I have also ordered 100x 150mm rainbows to be picked up at the end of April.

Trav love the offer pm sent.

    Cheers

Aren't Yabbies a bit frowned upon in dams ? They make holes everywhere allowing more water to seep out

  2. We tell lot of people that come into the shop that have either broken a graphite rod or are buying their first graphite rod to check out a video on you tube put out by Daiwa called "bending graphite rods". They show the do's & don'ts when using graphite rods.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5fqh2oHZ-E

We had a customer who had broken a rod & said that he didn't know why & it shouldn't have broken, when we showed him the video he said "ahhh, yeah, that's what I done"

A lot of people are not aware of the content of the video

    Cheers

Thanks, however I'm  not sure I believe the benefits of a Graphite Rod outweigh the bad points from watching that....give me a robust rod under "all"  situations any day, even "if" it means sacrificing a little casting distance and weight.

  3. Funny you say that, we headed down to Salt Creek for a day trip to christen dad's new surf rod ( Shimano Areo Wave). anyway, he was pulling in a chunk of weed of the beach, when the split butt snapped in two! this is the third time our Shimano rods have done this. We went back to where we purchased the rod from (Anaconda) and the guy at the front desk accused us of running it over with a car! Very disappointed with Shimano rods.

hmmmmmm....nearly bought one of those rods, glad i didn't then

  4. Sorry to hear about your rod troubles here, but trying to make sense of your post Seaseecol, did you lift the rod into the boat holding only the top third?

What weight rating is the rod?

Probably advise against lifting a graphite rod (especially with a reel attached) by only the top third, always go for the grip or heavier part of the blank.

It may have flexed with the weight of the reel in the wrong spot and 'bang' there she goes.

    Weight 5-8kg.....Lure weight10-30gram.

Yes, maybe I lifted it incorrectly, nonetheless it seems bending strength is not a good point with these. I hardly even bent the rod in lifting, and other rods I have take a lot more punishment than that. As stated originally,  I snapped the broken section in a few more places with not much more than simple finger and thumb pressure purely as a test....amazed how easily it was to break. 2 of my rods are of solid glass, I have had them for over 40 years and still as strong and supple as they were all those years ago....these ones can almost be bent into a circle unlike the broken Shimano in question. I also have 2 Len Butterworth hollow glass surf rods, both over 30 years old, still perfect after a lot of heavy bending. I mean fishing rods are meant to take abuse, or should be in my opinion, they are used in some very hostile situations, regions and conditions, shouldn't have to teat them like fine China. Conclusion...graphite may be strong and lightweight....but very brittle

  5. Not pleased !...bought 2 Shimano Travel Spin Rods a year or more ago, one 6 ft one 9 ft. The 9 footer I've only used a few times, seems OK, the other 6 ft Inshore Spin used maybe a dozen times. Despite little use and still looking like new the 6 footer snapped the other day about 1/3 down from the tip with very little pressure, just lifting it into the boat { not at the joins but midway between} I then lightly flexed the broken top section with only my finger tips as a test, and snapped the broken section 3 more times very easily. Surely no rod should be this weak in construction ?, it will certainly make me think about buying Shimano carbon fibre rods ever again, maybe even any carbon fibre ones. Cant help but wonder if  carbon fibre may be light and have good cast action , but mine sure seem to be seem to be fragile. Bit like my very expensive Saltist Demon Blood, scratches very easily and doesn't not seem at all robust.

  6. Zebra Fish, see picture...very common, hundreds around Port Noarlunga jetty all year round and most reef areas, break walls etc not so good to eat, but often caught. Moonlighter, occassionally caught, but not a regular line biter. I've only eaten one the size of a dinner plate , very fine texture flesh but very nice

  7. I have the fortunate, or unfortunate issue of never having enough fish to smoke anyway ;)

Can relate.....not inclined to fire up a smoker for a few suitable fish, maybe i need to concentrate on getting more Tommies...smoked Tommies and a icy beer = ambrosia

  8. I should have added and will now, I clean my crabs before cooking. Some refer to the yellow stuff as being flavour I refer to it as being crap or more to the point,.......shit.

I dont eat/suck the mustard/shit, lightly rinse it off before eating but I believe it adds flavour while cooking.

  9. yes definatly older crabs taste adverage usauly show signs of spots and dirtyness on the shells i no ya on the ball and also no ur an old basterd :D as ive seen pics of u and u make me feel like a spring chicken mate lmao ;)

u sure u steamed them enough as u have too do for 20-30mins cant over steam them as u can over boil them ;)

looking at ya pic again the shells arent snow white ay maybe it is due too there condition??

    just a few maybes ;)

Steamed for a good 20 minutes, just too old I think mate....not you mate.....I mean the crabs :P

  10. No insurance !!!....poor bugga, and  wait until he gets the wreck removal charge. Actually a little surprised a boat that size could navigate the Barker inlet ? Must say if I were sailing past a boat with an onboard fire of that intensity I'd be reluctant to get anywhere near it for fear of secondary explosion

  11. Sorry if this is a bit off topic, or has been covered before, but is there any reason crabs will throw their claws when cooking.

It doesn't seem to happen all the time, and not even all in the same batch.

I suppose it doesn't really matter, but just wondering if I was doing something wrong maybe ??

It is a defence mechanism, they will drop claws much like some lizards drop their tails when threatened. If a fish or the like tries to grab a Crab it will throw it's Claw as a deterrent and escape. But Crabs also drop their claws when cooked whilst still alive, as they sense the hot water/steam as a threat, instinct makes them drop claws but ofcourse to no avail id cooking is the reason. How to avoid it is to make sure the Crab is dead before cooking so the instinctive leg dropping is overridden , or placed into a freezer for a while to put it to sleep which has the same effect, the brain cant react if dead or frozen. Sometimes legs will still drop off, but the incidence will be reduced.

  12. i use too get that every now and then when i boiled them mate not sure if its because they have been over boiled or the lack of body meat

since ive been steaming them have never had a bad 1 even when they are empty they still taste choice... as the guts and feelers being boiled with little body meat is what make the crab taste crap when they arent full ;)

how full were they mate?? as i noticed the 1s i got the other day werent as full as previous 1s..beauty with steaming u cant over steam them either ;)

This lot were steamed mate, I put together a smallish 10 crab steamer a couple of weeks ago after suggestions. All good, the first lot 2 weeks back were great, not so this second lot. They seemed to have a reasonable amount of meat, but it was extra soft and watery, thinking maybe they are starting to lose condition down Brighton way. Have been cooking up Crabs since I was a young boy, spent much of my life raking them by the hundreds out of Middle Beach. This is the first time in my life I have rejected eating some crab because of taste, unusual ?...putting it down to poor quality of Crab not so much cooking style.

    Bit embarrassing as we had the new Pommie neighbours over for tea who were dying to try some, I think they enjoyed it, I think they got the better ones { smaller, I put dibs on the two larger ones hehehe }, but I chucked my couple in the bin as they were foul....{ age I think mate  the Crabs age, not mine :rolleyes:  }

  13. Hi Seeseacol, Do most people clean their crabs after cooking them? I've always cleaned them before boiling them. I don't think that would have made a difference to your crab problem.

I have all my life cleaned after cooking to retain flavour, I dont think it was the cooking but maybe the crabs themselves being extra large or end of breeding season or the like. It was only a couple of them that were a bit rank, the others { 4 } were OK
