  2. Don't you hate it when in anticipation of tmrw's catch (ever the optimist), I whip the lid off the crab cooker and Bingo.

    A stinky festering mess !!  Urgh....

    Guess who forgot to empty and clean it after the last effort a few days ago?

    The dogs think it's wonderful though !!

    I think the Karchers' about to get a run :lol:

  3. I haven't a huge amount of experience with freshwater berley, but so long as there is some current it should be effective. Whenever I have fished for Carp and use my pudding bait I throw out numerous tiny balls of the mix in the area I wish to cast...has given me some great results. { My favorite food for carp is simply flour/water and curry powder mixed into a stiff paste that stays on the hook well.

  4. G'day

    Hey Col are these NZ seals considered feral here?

    Cheers

    Rod

    Good question, I've never heard them referred to as feral, might be a good title though, but the term feral generally refers to creatures that were introduced by humans and have gone wild. The NZ Fur Seal has always been around and are not restricted to just NZ, but they usually prefer remote rocky shorelines as opposed to sheltered gulf regions.. The occurrence of large numbers in the Coorong in the time of our record keeping is rather unusual, especially way upstream into the freshwater regions like Milang and Murray Bridge. { I actually found a dead bull at Point Sturt in the reeds 2 weeks ago, reason of death unknown }

    I have mentioned before I worked with Marine Animals for 10 yrs primarily in rescue and rehabilitation, as well as some mammal training in the old and now defunct Marineland of Sth Australia. We used to receive/capture quite a few NZ Fur Seals, mostly pups and adolescents usuallly seperated from the main colonies and parents. The populations back then, approx 15 yrs ago were restricted to areas like Kangaroo Island, large herds now in the Gulf of St Vincent is relatively new, especially the lower lakes.

  5. Make pet food out of them, or fertilizer like they do with carp.

    And in some places in the world, folks eat them, so why don't we harvest them and create jobs in the process.

    Underwater crackers would only scare the fish, not the seals.

    Agree the crackers seem like a silly idea, I'm sure any fish will also move on with that much disturbance as well.

    Harvesting them....it'll never happen not while the eyes of the world are watching. Australia is strong on the anti Whaling scene, it sure as hell wouldn't want to be seen as being hypocritical

  6. Is it possible the seals are just coming back to where they once were? I mean i found/seen it first hand

    Note this is in the aboriginal museum down there and it states

    Tanned seal skin

    This seal was caught in the Goolwa channel in 1901 by the Lush family. The seal was caught in a net, and would have been in the Coorong chasing a feed. Seal was a traditional food.

    The Seal Skin in the link from Goolwa all those years ago does not look to be the troublesome Long-nosed Fur Seal { aka NZ Fur Seal....Arctocephalus forsteri }  but more likely the endangered Australian Sealion { Neophoca cinerea } of which there is only 1 mainland colony at Point Labbat, Sth Aust,  but generally associated with Kangaroo Island, plus offshore colonies. Vagrants of the endangered Australian Sealion can be encountered around much of our shoreline, but not in the huge numbers as is the case of the Long-nosed Fur Seal.

    Records generally indicate the Long-nosed Fur Seal has been around Sth Aust for many decades, and again mostly on Kangaroo Island. But now for whatever reason the population is growing rapidly and spreading out to establish more permanent or semi permanent colonies....and this is where the problem lies.....population explosion.

    Seems the recording of numbers varies a great deal, but one thing is for sure, there are a lot more than there was 20 or 30 years ago, or /and spreading out further afield. In the long term I guess they will move on once the food source is significantly depleted, which means we all suffer in the meantime....Seals no concept of conservation :rolleyes:

  7. Quote..........." And if that fish goes upstream or downstream to another property who owns it then ".....not so much a matter of who owns it then, but who owns the land to gain access to the fish wherever they are. If nobody owns the land where the fish travel to then it's open season. But I feel a little for farmers who own property and dont wish to allow just anybody trudging across their land, no more so than I like people entering my property without prior arrangement.

  8. I think if I was paying membership to cover costs of restocking streams etc I'd be hesitant to allow just anybody to have a free lunch so to speak. Problem being with allowing just anybody and everybody fish these selective areas it would get crowded and overfished very quickly, and likely destroyed. Imagine what it would be like if you paid yearly membership and rolled up to find a crowd of people all splashing around in one spot , raping the stream/dam, leaving litter behind, leaving farm gates open, disturbing grazing stock, vandalism  etc etc etc because there were no restrictions or security in place. Most people would do the right thing I'm sure, but the redneck element is out there, we see it on a regular basis everywhere. Sadly in life it is, and always will be a minority who will spoil it for the majority....friggin' human nature. If I were a farmer/landholder I would not be happy having just anybody at any time trudging across my property, disturbing my privacy, no more so that I like sales persons, or religious peddlars crossing my yard knocking on my door. { Door to door peddlars of anything get a very hostile reception and abuse from me when they disturb my privacy }

    Simple solution, become a member if you want to fish those special waters, or fish with the multitude in non restricted areas and take your chances, and likely be even more disappointed. :)

  9. I don't think mesh size matter. Only mentions hoop size and net depth. It doesn't mention anything about the material the mesh is made from

    http://pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/92337/Crab_Fishing_in_South_Australia_Recreational_Fishing_Guide_2015.PDF

    That's the way it reads to me as well, I have 3 shop bought nets ...2 are large mesh size, about 3inches, and 1 is about 1inch size mesh, so yeah maybe it doesn't matter

    I actually rang fisheries on this as a mate told me my yabbie nets made of Hessian were illegal.

    They told me mesh size is not a factor just opening sizes and overall sizes .

    The rules are often by no means clear is my finding...the Fisheries/PIRSA need to simplify/streamline some of the bulldust they

    as said mesh size doesnt matter mate

    a big tip tho if a crab thinks hes free he will let go and try get out so when getting them out grab bottom and top and empty like ur holding a bucket and most times they go straight into the bucket same as undersize 1s dangle upside down over the side and  they will let go ;)

    Cheers mate, going to reline the nets I bought with some HD cargo net of 1inch mesh to make it even simpler. Yes generally the crabs will let go when inverted in the net, but just as often the buggas twist and turn and completely enmesh themselves in the bigger mesh size such as I bought.

    Glad there is a hoop size not a "Hoopsy" size limit  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

    sorry, had to do it

    ooooooo....might leave that one alone...he's bigger and meaner looking than I am hehehe
