If everyone else is headed north, I'm going south.
Haven't been out for awhile, but hitting up Goolwa Beach for an overnight. Hopefully the mullys, gummies and salmon come out to play!

40 kph winds here today, I'm going nowhere at the moment... in the morning it's only 4 kph before it turns crappy again for four days of strong winds..
So hopefully will get in a river in the morning.. may try a small tannin stream close to home to see if any trout have moved into it since the 44 mms of rain we had here a few days ago.. It's that time of year when the trout should be starting to head up some of these small streams & creeks providing there's enough water flowing in them..
    cheers

Codswallop! They're Fly Agaric not your 'magic mushrooms'. Also common in and around your Pine Mushrooms
Yes they are reported to produce hallucinations but are rather toxic. If you're lucky will result in abdominal cramping, vomiting & diarrhea. Unlucky, permanent liver damage. Are 'edible' with correct preparation, apparently delicious too! https://honest-food.net/eating-santas-shroom/
Stick with the standard Blue Meanies for your 'shroom experiences.

    Happy Easter everyone!
Who has plans over the long weekend to partake in our fantastic obsession of fishing?
Let us know where you're heading and what you're targeting.
I'd like to second what Doobie said in his Easter fishing report, take care on the roads! Good luck everyone getting that bag, pb or feed you're after.

If you're not sure if it's a mushroom or a toadstool then leave it be, one way to check the difference is to scratch the top of it and if it goes yellow then it's a toadstool.. also a lot of toadstools are white underneath as well..
    Here's a few magic mushrooms..

As a kid we'd used to find Field Mushrooms every Autumn, as per Adrian's bag. Very, very tasty indeed.
Sadly, somewhere along the line they became far less common and Agaricus Xanthodermus (see below) or 'Yellow Stainer' became very dominant. They look similar to field mushys but are toxic. Easily distinguished by the yellow bruises that develop when damaged. These also smell somewhat like 'hospital disinfectant' too.

Im no expert but if you want an easy one to identify - both dead easy to find and identify, you cant go past the Pine Mushroom. Literally anywhere were there is an average stand of mature radiata pines will likely produce these, especially in the hills. I picked a heap from the young fellas school in Crafers (cant find that photo) and  could have easily gathered 100+kg at Kuitpo and Mt Crawford forests last season.
They look kinda weird as they are realllly orange and ooze orange sap when cut - hence also known as 'Saffron Milkcaps'. Their only downside is their mild flavour, not strong earthy you might expect from Fields or Porchini.
My favorite is simple: Quick pan fry in butter and a little garlic, brandy flambe. Served on toasted rye bread with  some freshly shaved pecorino

Love the fungi,  so many different shapes and colours. So delicate and beautiful.
Looking forward for some Autumn rains over here to kick off our season.  Hopefully many-a-feed of Pine Mushys .
Maybe this year...ill find the elusive Porchini. Got a few spots sussed to check out, when the time comes .

    Hey Guys,
After landing a few mulloway, flathead and small salmon on my double clutches it has become clear that as deadly sharp that these hooks are. They bend and snap after a few good fish. I currently own 8 double clutches and need to replace hooks on 6 of these.
Have heard the owners in the same size are a much stronger hook but are heavier.
I am sure many of you have had to replace these hooks so what has been your go to?

    Right so here goes.
This is my personal opinion. Everyone has there own theories or the must have colour.....
However what works for me are 3 main factors.
    Number 1:
Colour choice. It is not so much the colour that I am looking into. I am looking at how much UV properties a certain jig has. Squid are supposedly colour blind so they don't see colours however they see shapes and patterns from shadows and contrasting colours. When any light form hits a UV jag it creates a shadow/pattern that the squid can see easily. Uv Jags work well at night and on bright days..... On overcast cloudy days a dark more neutral colours creates contrast and that is what the squid see.
    Number 2:
Jag Size. I am landbased and alot of my waters i fish are shallower grounds. I believe Jag size is of massive importance. Imagine using an 3.5 jag in shallow waters. It means that it sinks quicker and gets down to the bottom quicker which means that you have to work the jag back faster. On average a 3.0 size jag will have a sink rate of 3 seconds per metre. I use nothing bigger than a 2.5 size jag and go as low as a 1.6 jag in real shallow waters. A 2.5 jag has a sink rate of approx 6 seconds per metre so theoretically the light the jag the longer sink rate time, the more time it is in the water so you can cover alot more water for alot longer.
So use a jag thats going to work in the waters you are fishing.... if you are out deep obviously you wouldn't use an 2.0 jag as the current and the deeper water wont get down to the bottom....
    Number 3:
Make sure you get the jag as close to the bottom as possible without getting snagged. I see it on so many occasions. People have jags under a float and you can see the jig under the water. Or even when working it back. Squid wont come up high to eat food in the water column. They know they are getting preyed and hunted on so they hide amongst the weed and cover of semi shelter.
So they are the main areas i concentrate on when squidding.
Also consider getting getting a better quality squid jag as they not only work differently, but also swim/drop more naturally and the components are generally better.
Yo Zuri, Daiwa, and yamashitas are my go to jags with The Yo zuri HS being my go to colour. Next time you are in the shop run a uv torch over a Yo zuri HS jag and you'll understand why it is probably the most popular jag aswell as the Red white head Yo zuri.
    Hope this helps

April would have to be my favourite time to go there, so you're on the money for some good fishing! Especially on the South Coast. If there are offshore winds, it would be worth having a suss at some of the main beaches down there, might come across a salmon school for endless exhausting fun. Good luck ScaledUp! Really looking forward to the report
P.S. I remember years back, I asked the same questions on this forum.. If it weren't for the help of fellow S&H'ers my trips wouldn't have been as eventful as they were! Great people make a great forum..
