KIDNEY SLAPPER reacted to Panga in Calls to ban sea nets after thousands of dead fish found dumped off Ardrossan jetty
We are getting off the topic imo but here is my say.
We do need change, yes but in SA that is a slow process and not at all realistic let alone guaranteed. IMO
We all need to discussed opions here but we need to do it with respect to others as we are all amateur fisho's with a common interest.
Sure we have different views but no need the attack fellow members. Not a good look IMO.
In Vic they have a fishing show on tv that I have seen from time to time, in SA not so and the reason is we do not have population to warrant it, nor the backing from the government (they are closing ch 44)
I feel more polies should get out fishing and realize that they can, relax, clear their heads and see what life has to offer on the wet H20.
Licence ? Yes and No ?
Yes if it helps us, the regular rec fisherperson and makes us heard but we see where our money is spent. Also have a body in the govt that is pro-active for us all and is accountable to all question to stakeholders (us) be that where monies are spent and visions moving on.
No because I (imo) do not trust this govt as they could see the money spent elsewhere. Also what about the mums and dads that go away with the grand parents, children, cousin's and so on for a seaside holiday ? They need a licence or face a fine, remember this is a once in a year trip. That makes it great for the government but what about the family and if they get caught without a licence ? Holiday over and sowed but something they were not aware they need.
Cheers
PS KS and Doobie you can come over for a fish on my boat, it is big enough.

KIDNEY SLAPPER reacted to Booma in redfin spots
I think the issue with Redfin populations in pressured fisheries is that the bigger fish get taken out of the system.
Redfin can breed by the time they are 12cm, and I wouldnt mind guessing that they get from egg size to 12cm faster than they get from 12cm to say, 30cm (a size I would consider a Redfin would need to be to regularly prey on smaller Redfin).
I have nothing against guys who are catching and killing, as long as they apply it to every size fish they catch. Catch and release (yes it is illegal) has no overall impact on size and population, would probably work better if small to mid size fish were killed and bigger fish release.
The biggest cause of problem with Redfin populations (in my uneducated opinion), is the removal of the bigger fish completely. This removes basically the only predators in the system that will actively prey on the smaller Redfin, but also lowers the bar for the maximum size fish will attain. Without the big fish culling the numbers of fry, more survive, and the population explodes, leading to a huge number of fishing stunting at around 20cm due to over competition for food.
People who are fishing for a feed of redfin (not all, but it only takes a few), are probably more likely to throw those small fish back while keeping the bigger edible ones, and this starts the chain reaction going. As I said, I've seen it happen before in bushland Park.
Sorry for the novel, but that all ties back to my advice for Nick, if he is chasing bigger Redfin, less well known, and less pressured spots are the way to go. Or get in early at a new spot (like St clair), before the population crashes into stunted sizes.
Like I said, not judging anyone on their choice of what to do with a Redfin they catch, but a moments pause as to what effect it will have on the established ecosystem can't be a bad thing right?

KIDNEY SLAPPER reacted to Booma in redfin spots
No I have no idea how they got there, it's nowhere near my local stomping grounds and I've never fished there myself. Either in the water (eggs or young fish) they used to fill it, or translocated would be my guess.
That's what I'm saying though, there will always be reddies in St clair, but the more pressure it receives, the smaller the fish get. Thought it was worth pointing out since Nick specifically asked for a location to get good size fish.
Bushland Park is a great example of this. Being a local lake for me, I've watched the fishing pressure ramp up on it over the last 20years. It went through a huge change about 3-4years ago where the population of bigger fish went from being 50\50 with smaller fish, to almost none in the period of one summer. Still heaps of redfin there for sure, just that almost all of them are around the 15-20cm mark

KIDNEY SLAPPER reacted to hooklinestinker in squidding help
If you've got half an hour spare, this video was what I watched when I first started squidding - Yamashita Squid Fishing Techniques with Taiki Natsume Yamashita Squid Jigging Tutorial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swl5JfD4yvg
Taiki describes all the variables to consider for squid fishing, water conditions, tides, time of day, light conditions etc. You'll learn almost everything you need to know with this one video. Changing up your action to suit the activity level makes a big difference for me (landbased), with a more rapid action when the squid are firing, and a lazy flick with the rod tip every 10-15 seconds when they're quiet.
Winds and currents not lining up can be a problem, and it's definitely easiest to feel the slack on the line when the current and the wind is running away from you, putting tension on the line. I've had days at Brighton jetty and Rapid Bay with wind and current running in opposite directions, and the best solution for me was to throw on a deep diving jig, like this 30g deep diving jig:
These suckers sinks like a stone so they're great for fast-moving currents, when 3.5 weight jigs or less will take foreeeeeeever to get to the bottom. They're especially good for fast action jigging.
Anyways, I could keep writing different pointers about weeds, jig colour etc all night, or you could just watch the video, and Taiki knows a lot more than me!
PS. Buy some Breaden squid snaps off ebay, about $10 a pack. By a mile the best snap for squid jigs, and saves you heaps of time changing jigs over.
