  1. U can see the rod in Rotare’s vid to see what the action is on it whilst jigging, excuse the unco-ness on my behalf tho.

In all honesty, I don’t really pay too much attention to some of the finer points of actions etc. I just know what I find comfortable to use, but yes, I’ve had the thing bent to a nice semi circle all the way to rod seat during tussles with those Samsons!!

In an ideal world, one would have a rod for jigging, another for bottom bashing and another for Jigging, but in my case I just can’t justify the $$$$ so choose this one to cover all bases.

I guess jigging and bottom bashing need very similar traits in rods tho, would you agree?

I can tell you that when trolling a tuna hard body with it the whole rod vibrates, not just the tip.

I’ve actually discussed it with other mates, no idea why.

Yes, PE5 Saltiga braid on the reel.

Reckon we call it quits once 20oz sinkers don’t hold the bottom down off the Cape, not the best if the fish aren’t biting , but the rod handles it ok.

  2. Its no secret Im a big fan of the Catalina rods. Ive got 2 of them and love them to bits.

    Ive got a 59HS and a Nabura 67.

Ive got a 5000 catalina on the 59HS and use it for bottom bashing in the strait and beyond. No worries handling the lead needed and the fish encountered. Ive also used it on the BFT found that way, seemed to work ok?

Ive also taken it on a liva aboard early this year, worked great Jigging big samsons out from Coffins.

I had a quick Jig with my mates Monster mesh, and the layout of the grips felt much nicer on the Catalina, but it may be a personal thing.

The charter operator had all Monster mesh's for customers to use if the need arrised tho.

Intrestingly, I couldnt find the Catalina rods listed on the Diawa website just then, did come across the saltist hyper range which I didnt know of. The Catalina is still listed in shops tho

Ive played with the Saltist rods and they seem ok for the $$$, and even cheaper, I did briefly own a salina II rod with the fancy blue seat etc.

Much cheaper, so bang for buck it was pretty damn good if you dont mind the brand image.

Mate also got given a ABU garcia Salty JIg to try and break during our charter, it too worked well and may be worth a look.

  3. I think it's economics to an extent, a mid to high end reel is worth paying to have it done if you aren't confident.

But I too am interested in servicing those sub $100 reels a lot of us use!!

I dunked a Shimano Sonora, and carefully stripped it, cleaned and regreased it by just paying attention whilst dismantling and then again during assembly. Works fine.

But I am interested on keeping the drags on these cheap reels working as new.

  4. How they feel dutchy? Considering getting one cant go wrong for that price with the review it got

R&A's have them in stock mate, $129, be intresting to feel one up.

Ive belted its older , cheaper brother: Biscayne 80 with bottom bashing. Its worked a treat for the $80 it cost me.

Dutchy, maybe mount it on a Saltist rod? or a Okuma Salina rod?

  5. I managed to get out yesty locally. Mainly drifted around squiding with one paternoster in the water in case I stumbled on a tinger patch.
Only got hook ups on throw backs, leatheries, weedies , red mullet, even a juvenile blue throat!

Ended up with a good feed of squid (2kg of clean edible goodness) n the biggest cuttlefish I've ever caught. The thing was a beast.

Had a really good time just me n my girl, for a 5 year old she is really getting into it and guess what show n tell will be this week? :D

My little whiting rock looked killer on the sounder, the blue blotches where hordes of pigmies tho.

Found em north last week, metro this week, n my mate found them on all his tinger drops down at wirrina!!

Have to speak the guys at the desal, c if they can run a backwash trial again, keep the population in check!

  6. I don't know the ins and out of actions etc. But I do own the older Nabura 67, matched perfectly to a Certate 3000, 20LB braid. Its my local Snapper rod, mainly bait, no worries with smallish baits and 4oz's.

Handled fish to 9kg nicely and great fun.

Also dropped plastics on top of a school of 10-12kg BFT, again, great fun, and a challenge, did get busted off a few times tho :)

Salmon to 4kg throwing slugs at a school from the boat aswell.

Id say a 4000 FJ would be a bit heavy on it tho.

Did I say I love it?

  7. I’ve used plenty of eBay braid in the past, never had an issue with it breaking under what is conceived as acceptable, but have heard stories and seen a failure last month on a charter that was said to be due to cheap china braid brought off a local shops bulk spool .

But, I will say that over the last couple years I’ve slowly upgraded all my most used and loved reels to have some sort of brand name braid.

Some of this brand name stuff is head and shoulders above the eBay stuff and worth the extra $$$, some of it to a lesser extent.

The main difference is that even tho the cheap eBay stuff works “fine” it’s not as nice to use and more often than not, a bigger diameter when compared to its big $$$ cousin.

Also, just be very weary when buying from eBay in regards to what you’re getting. Many times, the spool that is pictured is not the spool you get.  You may get the same colour and noted breaking strain, but don’t be surprised if its branded totally different.

I’ve also bought some no name china braid, and when it arrived, was a spool of the knock off Power Pro stuff.

Ive used that particular label shown in that link as well with no major ill effects

  8. Majority of the rods where Saltigas, except I was using a Catalina, and Stormboy a Monster Mesh.

Skipper was using a Samaki Vanquish, he rated it highly when matched to his Saltiga expedition spinner.

We all commented  about the type of tackle needed for this type of fishing, lesser gear may knock over a fish or 2, but I reckon after a hectic session like that, only the best would still be working at the end of it.

Skipper and decky had plenty of stories about broken gear, some of it expected, some it not
