Amazing! 11 pages and going... although everyone is and has put up good arguments over the pros and cons of shark fishing on metro jetties and the beurocrats will in the end - have their way one way or the other,I'm going to dumb it down a bit and although some might not agree - and thats your choice - give you one mans opinion...1. The old fella that took it upon himself to use his age and "local-ness" to abuse the shark fisherman for fishing on "his jetty"???? - broke the law.......If you are angry about life for whatever reason - see a therapist! dont take it out on others....If you approach anyone - abuse them - touch their personal property - and threaten?? That is breaking the law.... can just imagine what would have happened if the tables were turned and the sharko did that to the old man! Anyway - the story goes the "local" police knew the old man and so decided to "believe" and take his side and overlook what happened? why? Because he is old???? frail??? a respected member of the community??? (again my opinion sounds like the police need to go back to police school and re-learn the rules)....2. Bronze whaler shark - diet - fish, squid, offal... White pointer shark - diet - seals, dolphins, fish, other sharks, whales, offal...Fact: In the fiji islands shark fisherman use "rattles" to lure sharks (a stick with coconut shells cut in half and piled on top of eachother) then sort of "shuck shucked" in the water and it brings them to the boat - sounds like a fish thrashing or a (SWIMMER splashing) sends them crazy....The point here is that the sharks will first be lured to the commotion in the water by the swimmers - they will "feel" the vibrations and come in for a look....(that is what a shark does).....BUT

By fishing somewhere else, it's to avoid confrontation. After a news release like that, you're bound to have a lot of anti-sharko vigilante idiots out there. Don't put yourself and your $1000++ equipment in danger. You can put forth your point of views without purposely heading to a location knowing you'll get yourself into a fight. At the end of the day, if you land a punch on some idiot who touches your rod, you'll make yourself look worse thanks to the media. Also, the more likely charge will be for assault rather than tampering with another person's fishing equipment illegally seeing that one can be concretely proven with marks and bruises whereas the other is most likely hearsay. Put forth your point of view through either the media, the appropriate people/organisation/clubs and of course if you want, a non-aggressive rally. Educate the public through fairs or any other activities. Just don't purposely go up to the jetty to prove a point. You'll be doing no one else except these anti-sharkos and the media a huge favour.

use people can talk all you want.because thats all of you are all talk and no walk nothing you say will stop us.so sick or hearing and seeing this crap go on and on.CONCLUSION EMU AND OTHER AGAINST SHARK FISHINGNothing you say nor do will stop us from shark fishingend of story if you get in our ways we are not responsible for our actions.we just want to enjoy something we love and work hard for. we dont have boats like most fishos.we do our best to have fun and achieve a challenge which we do legally.life savers have no respect. and there supposed to bee showing a example to the many peoples lives they care to protect.i think personally use all should go have a talk with the sharks themselves and as them why they come in close every year to give birth? its nature and your swimming in there backyard.get over it and grow up there is more tragic things going on around your society and community aswell as the world which are more important then fishing for sharks honestly.this thread needs to be deleted not because of the creator i give him full respect but for the people who took over it ridiculously and made it there own topic especially one person who only has made a few posts seriously.take it to the courts or councils you want get no where. you have already seen how big the fishing community is for greens aim to put in marine parks. we are strong and once we unite we wont be stopped.if we break the law we deserve to be punished but the only people breaking the law here is the ones who are touching and trespassing our property.dont start a war you cant win. its all about respecting one an another. life savers have a job to dooand that save lives ? don't think in there portfolio contract it states go over fishermen lines cut there lines report them this and that seriously do your job correctly.if thers Gold found and free for any one to go and get or course your gonna go and get it for free ?same as sharks if the treasure is around we will chase it.

Guys, I understand the frustrations this topic causes on both sides of the fence.I would like to provide you all with the chance to say your piece and air your views on the subject, but I see tempers flaring and things getting heated. So before anyone "loses their sh*t" at anyone else, and before anyone says something they may regret later which causes repercussions, as a favour to you all, I think it best that this topic be locked for 24 hours, just to give everyone time to take a breath, cool off, and collect their thoughts before we resume.I trust you consider that the fairest option for everyone.

Yeah, don't salt them. They'll explode. Just dry them a bit with paper towel. Dip them in metho for 20-30 sec. Lay out on newspaper to dry a bit. Bag them and freeze. When it comes to using them, pop a folded bit of paper towel in the bag to soak up any moisture.Well done on getting some worms. I got around 600 last month land based. Was going to go out Thursday night, but might be too last by the sounds of it.CheersSam :f

luke_southoz reacted to Jack. in Barometric Pressure
I keep a fishing diary, basic water temp, wind, tide, phase of the moon and barometric pressure. A heap of other factors effect the fishing but you have to draw the line somewhere. A scrap book with these bits including the bait/lure and the spot is where I draw my line. As far as air pressure goes, I have found the following;A sudden drop in air pressure (before the arrival of a cold front) can sometimes see the fish switch right on and go ballistic. Once the front hits, the fishing will often shut down for sometime. Generally speaking, long periods of stable high pressure seems to be best.  The fish I target are local favorites, Snapper, Bream, Yellowfin whiting, Salmon Trout and recently Mulloway. The big Salmon and ST variety in the estuary setting are the best bet when the temp and pressure are down, because they seem to be more affected by wind and water movement than the barometer. An interesting note on salmon trout though is that rather than stop feeding, they will feed high in the water column when the pressure is up and deep when it is low, although this may well have more to do with where the bait is In the past I've gone from a metal slice or popper on top, then bibbed minnow, then plastics, until I've found them deep using a heavy jig head and working the plasic real close to the bottom. The reverse is also the case and when a nice school of salmon trout are feeding close to the surface, it can be pretty exciting stuff, often in spring you can see the surface strikes and it's awesome fun. The same with bait, sometimes a heavy weighted pilchard is required, higher pressure will allow you to use a float or unweighted pillie. For the big Bream, the end of December early January is my favorite with big stable highs and the water temp right up, you can work a popper under overhanging mangroves and get the Bream striking the surface. The pressure drops out and you're better off using a Blade even in the same spot. No different with bait, I can drift and unweighted crab about and have a run in the top third of the water column, pressure drops and it's better to use some weight. The fish still feed if you've got good water temp and movement, the presure definitely effects them though. Snapper are a bit different, I find any kind of change can freak em out and cause a hot bite. Like bottom of the tide change, the first crack of a storm, a wind change, anything but a full moon. You have a fortnight of heatwave because a massive h pressure cell hasn't moved and the second that barometer drops.... Race out and launch the boat and head for your favourite wreck.... can be a dicey time on the water though.I don't fish much for KGW so haven't really got much info on what effects them.

luke_southoz reacted to ecofreak in life expectancy of squid /calamari
Southern Calamari or Sepioteuthis australis lieves for 320 to 380 days depending on environmental factors and the ability to spawn, the southern Calamari will only spawn once or maybe twice in its life with the male outlasting the females in longevity after a physically demanding spawn, the males will live as long as it takes to protect the eggs once laid on heavy vegetation. The males will only feed on food that comes into direct contact with them while protecting eggs and will rarely leave the eggs unattended until they them selves die. While I was studying this subject at uni it was noticed that the males will live approx 8 weeks longer than the females and more often than not will die before the eggs hatch. Most squid are not sedentary and will travel vastly in their life time, they grow at approx double their size every 4 weeks to an average of 50cm maximum. There have been some Southern calamari that have grown in excess of 60cm mantles but they are very rare as these squid live in open water and are targets of all manner of prey including their cousins the arrow squid. This does not mean that they have lived longer in order to reach these sizes, rather its an indication of the squid that has a protein based body working harder to maintain buoyancy and movement, its a bit like us going to the gym every day, we build our muscles bigger with more work and bigger diet.
