emufingers, your lucky i dont wanna be banned of this site cause otherwise id lose my shit at you.you should be worried about some sick freak taking your grandchildren from the beach, not a shark attacking them,as i said so many time our baits are normally over 300m out, we normally dont burley (with fish) if we do its very minnium around sunset.your life guards are the ones that are always rude to use, paddle across our lines when they know that they are there, yet we have never touched or had a go at one of them, which is very tempting to do when my line and trace is worth over 140 bucks.you can think your a big man for this ban shark fishing debate, but i cant afford a boat and people like you are trying to take what i love doing away? just because theres a few harmless bronze whalers swimming around, we should just start going down to the jetty and smashing pills and beers seems like we wouldnt get abused for thatwhata joke all this crap is!

I remember fishing the warves around the port and the metro jetties in the late eighties and early nineties when I was in high school. Some of those spots were as rough as guts with dero's punching on and beer bottles being smashed. I reckon I learned a lot about conflict resolution and risk management through those days I also have spent time surfing in QLD and WA. Plenty of times I've sent baits out from the shore at Yallingup (near Margaret River) after surfing in the morning. The two pursuits are not mutually exclusive . And I've seen a lot more tiger sharks out there on my board than I ever hooked  I doubt the majority of people that poo poo shark fishing really have a passion for the salt. And I do mean PASSION. It surprises me that people have mentioned SA surf lifesaving clubs on here, because a lot of the lifesavers in northern NSW and the Gold Coast are also pretty avid fisho's :S Anyone that want to walk up to a shark fisho and get in his face is the wrong doer. Don't forget also that a lot of the guys out on the planks are youngsters they aren't grafitti ing your fence or laying rubber in your street. Nor are they home plotting unspeakable things like good emo kids do. No, they are out waiting for an adrenalin pumping run from a big toothy beast. These kids save their money for some pretty cool gear ( my wife would freak if I came home with a $1000 reel lol) and get out into the outdoors and learn that you have to bloody earn what you get in this world. Call it six months at maccas saving for a good combo, while your mates are on their fat backsides playing xbox, then a week staring at the balloon in the middle of the night.... When them runs come and a bronzie is landed these kids need a pat on the back.... Well :c Done Lads. If you go back to when I was 15 years old and saw a brawl on Henley jetty where a guys lost an ear, then you could ask whether much has changes in 19years???? If it hasn't, then we ought to be asking how we can make our jetties SAFER for young shark fisho's, not making life more difficult for em by spewing out the same old 'sharks gonna eat our kids' crap that is based on nothing more than hysterical public opinion fostered by the discovery channel and great old movies like Jaws!

Sorry, people in this thread dont sound like they have respect? Some old guy grabbing someones personal property and threatening to throw it into the water, yeah some how i dont think you would be pleased if someone did that to your property.also , sorry but i dont appreciate some geezer getting up in my face when we are doing nothing wrong its not against the law you also dont own the beach either. So do you think having 3 30cm baits sitting 200m off shore is going to so called lure sharks in? If you were to fish 500m further down from the jetty, whats stopping them from coming 500m further up?How far do you and your grandkids swim? must be going rather far out to put yourself into any danger i would be more worried about standing on a stingray. Also can you supply me with a adelaide shark attack off a local beach close to shore.Thanks.

Just troll along the edge of the channel as close past the markers as is safe. I believe there is a bit of a hole by the first marker near the end of the channel that the Snook sit in. They seem to be there most of the time but the early morning and late afternoon tides are probably the best; when the Salmon Trout come out to play, the Snook won't be far behind.

G'day peeps,I've said this on previous threads about the same situation, YES shark habits are changing and anyone that wants to deny this is a walking/swimming appetiser for these great predators...The ban that came in for pointers all those years ago has worked - there are more pointers around now than there has been since before pro fishing started for then in the 40's.....Problem now being lots more people/boats/tourism/food all targeting and attracting these fish.....I have had a lot of experience with these fish and they are a fast learner - probably why they are at the top of the food chain - I think the biggest problem is that people are teaching them where there is humans - boats/noise/ etc. there is a free feed - for example we have tourist boats that go to the same place and burley for these things for a tourist to jump into a cage and take pictures - although the shark doesnt think that way - all it knows is boat noise = food! (sort of like the pavlovs dog theory) - and at times these boats will have 4 to 6 big sharks around the boat......So lets keep it local - one trader burleys around north and south neptune island which as the crow flies is not far away - so on a day when a pointer goes for a cruise can be over here in the gulf in a day ----- same thing though ----- boat noise = food! but this time its mr. and mrs. angler in their 16 foot bellboy sitting a few miles off wirinna minding their own business - or worse a bunch of youngn's wakeboarding off henley! Lots of people here too when they see a pointer will throw food in to get that extra photo or extra minute of video - and that just makes the problem worse - although they are oblivious to what they are doing.....I am a little passionate about this issue, the latest one of my friends was killed only early this year as he came up next to his ab boat and I have lost a few friends over the years - and I still work the ocean yearly and have been in situations recently where the sharks habits were so different I am lucky to still be here....All that said, I still think culling isnt the go, let's stop feeding them first and maybe put them back in their natural state where they dont mix with humans on such a regular basis - let's try that first before we start wiping out such a magnificent machine.....remeber - these fish travel fast and a trip up or down the coast for a thousand k's is just a regular thing for them - throw in the fact that a lot of them now associate boat noise with a feed???? well, its time to be a little more careful....Let's stop feeding them...Cheers...

OK,I said there was a secret but there are a "couple" of things you can do to improve your picky metro whiting results. This method mainly applies to the scenario where you are in 10-20 metres and are losing baits or parts of the bait"usually" the black part of the cockle.First off don't use braid,it does help you to feel bites but imo it also allows picky fish to detect you.I also like to use a nibble tip rod for the same reason, the fish can have a couple of picks then slowly load up the rod without feeling resistance.I also like to use the lightest possible sinker "too light to actually anchor your bait in one position"this is because when you feel the slightest of picks you need to let out 1 metre or so of line to allow the rig to drift back with the current"the same way a loose bit of bait would if in a current"sometimes you might have to do this 4 or five times.I always use chemically sharpened hooks in size 6 and Daichi 2451 would be my favorite "they will increase you hookup rate by about 15% over old school hooks and last but certainly not least you should use berley,on most occasions i use fresh squashed pillies in a pot on the bottom although "up nth" crab scraps can be just as good. One thing that i'm pretty anal about is don't let the pot just sit on the bottom imo it has to be tied off perfectly so that the pot bounces on the bottom with the movement of the boat, during a session i might retie the pot half a dozen times. This is because when the pot bounces it lets out berley in waves which encourages the fish to compete "if the pot just sits on or off the bottom the berley just trickles out in a stream that can be picked off at the fishes leisure"it also sends out puffs of sand as it bounces, imo whiting can stimulated by visual cues....much like us ,which is also the reason i sometimes use a well beaten squid bait on the top hook if they are in that mood.I hope all that helps 4thelove "but just remember" you can't always believe everything you read on the net  cheers brenton

I found the shamino siennas to be a good cheap real. Then go with a light rod in 1-4 or 2-4 in a 7ft or 6'6, with 2-4lb braid. I fish light though.

Luke, I'm out of action for a little while due to a collapsed trailer bearing. Maybe it'd pay you to come out for a day with me when the trailer is once again operative, and it will give you a much better idea of what to expect, and what local conditions are really like around Adelaide waters. You cover my fuel costs, have a drive of the boat, a chat about what you need, and maybe get a few ideas to help you along, or if nothing more, come around have a chat and pick my brains for anything worthwhile which may be hidden away in there.
