would of thought an overhead would be the obvious choice for chasing sharks off the beach having said that i would use 20lb braid if using a spinreel even then your pushing for line :pinch: you'll know all about it when you hook on to a decent one lol
i would say head first as thats usually where the squid will go for the back of the head but sometimes come in from the side only drawback is the head sometimes gets in the way of the barbs making it ineffective

tennyson beach on the turn of a receeding tide theres a strip sand bar thats exposed on the run out.. i tease mine out with a tiny piece of prawn wrapped in white curtain fabric so as the worm goes for the prawn when it grips on you slowly twist it up out of its hole so he's more exposed to your other hand to come in with the index finger & thumb pinching his head in a vice like grip pulling straight up some from last yr
