  1. hi mate, probably one of the best overhead casting reels for the beach or any landbased situation would be the shimano calcutta series.the tld 15 will do the job aswell if on a budget,i have noticed the tld 15s have been on sale lately at a few places.as for mono or braid it also depends on personal choice, both have advantages.alot of guys still prefer mono due to its abrasion resistance and forgiving nature.i have used braid myself but have been running 10ft casting leaders to help with a bit of stretch on the initial cast, cheers
  2. wicked capture mate, goes to show if your prepared and on the ball anything is possible.
  3. have both brands and both good.i think shimano and daiwa are equals in the highend department.possibly shimano cater better for the budget buyer in the smaller threadlines but as a whole equals depending on budget of coarse.not sure what Nanman's on about saying stellas aren't sexy ,especially with a jm monster spool .my personal opinion is shimano when it comes to game reels, especally tiagras, they are solid with bullet proof drag systems, love both though
  4. agree with all the above comments,100 kilogram plus blufin tuna,30 kg king and mully, ang Gt,5lb bream, any many others
  5. had a play with one of these today, very sweet reel going by the way it felt, looks tuff too but as nanman said,is overpriced unfortunately.if i remember correctly a similar pricing blunder happened with the stellas and twinpowers a little while ago.once they dropped the price of the twinpowers they sold out of them.wonder if this will happen with the catalina, hope so,
  6. has any reviews been done on the new catalina yet?i love the old model just like you guys but the 4000 size is a must have reel in my opinion in the newer range.the old 4500 was a weighty beast compared to the newer 4000 which u can easily fish 30lb or 50lb braids and still have that finesse feel.but like you guys have mentioned the newer reels have not been around long enough.i used a new saltiga on a five day charter out from rocky last year and was impressed with the weight factor in comparison to the standard 4500z.still can fit 300 metres of pe3 which is 50lb in the hyper type braids and
  7. Whitworths sell similar ones to yours PRM,my setup suited me due to my boat not having a big enough kill tank as such,so it was a no brainer, and does a few jobs when required.
  8. Thanks for the kind comments urhookedfish,The rod storage is great for exactly what you have said, also the standard stainless steel rocket launchers are not really friendly on graphite spinning outfits, stops them moving around as much.i should mention another important thing to have is sufficient fall on your drains, this keeps the water flowing enabling the pump to be left on for extended periods.relationship with waterline heights and water level in livebait tank is important so measure carefully and double check before drilling holes in boat or esky.another way to get some more height to hel
  9. howdy PRM,just thought i would update you on the satbc, what ranger said was correct but recently spoke to club secretary and there still is a waiting list but apparently not as long as ranger said, people have pulled out, alot do not have boats ,ramp upgrade is scheduled for next february and key deposits have gone up in price so guys that are not serious or too tight have pulled out.i have been a member for the last 10 years or so,good to go out for an allnighter and know car is safe, next year will be all tide launch,at the moment on dead low tide is hard to retrieve, good club though, just t
  10. some more, haha, had to recently show a mate of mine so they were handy,
  11. hi PRM,nice livie tank mate, looks like it will work a treat.for all you guys contemplating setting one up in your tub i will put up some pics of mine which was made from a 100 litre igloo esky which i have had for years, this justified me customising and drilling holes in it .i should mention that i also remove this for landbased excursions in the forby aswell, also doubles as a kill tank in the boat when the need arises, hope this helps anyone who wants to have a crack at it.basically setup with 2 drains which go outboard and a feed hose which has a tap which i can shut when i turn off the pum
  12. Hi guys,A fella at work just had a 26 ft contender walkaround from the states land, saw some pics, mindblowing rig.twin 225 yammies with just over 100hrs.very envious, haha,he was sweatin though until it landed.if any of you guys want some direct legit contacts, let me know, cheers
  13. should be able to get it fixed mate if purchased locally,or send it away possibly to get repaired to shimano direct.
  14. howdy phear, sabiki rigs work well mate,a small tip would be to buy the larger hook variety if the slimies are the big ones, probably pays to carry both, cheers
  15. for guys that use the pvc,i made some longer ones up out of the heavier walled pvc.you can also glue the plastic rod holder inserts that you can purchase from the shops which are designed for stailess steel rocket launchers.this protects the reel and also a bit of shock absorbtion when you hammer them in,i also use a bit of timber to protect the insert, works a treat, had mine a few years and still going strong.

nice nanman, can't do much better than a tiagra mate, class of their own tossing up whether to get one myself, possibly a 50 wide though,if anyone has one and wants to trade some primo jig gear, let me know
  17. howdy adamw, there are many different variables to rigging up a knife jig mate.i personally run wind on leaders, tie a bimini in the braid and then attach the wind on via crossloop connection.i usually will run a 130lb minimum leader also.this gives good abrasion resistance and is handy to grab onto when a big fish is at the boat.when attaching leader material to jig itself i will run a ball bearing swivel or a heavy duty barrel swivel to a heavy duty split ring.then i will attach an assist hook which will have a solid ring incorporated into it already.this way allows quick jig changes and no ne
  18. have to agree with nanman boys, dirty fighters mr king .years ago on the old rapid bay jetty we use to see a six foot plus model with barnacles growing on his back lazily swimming around with lines and lures hanging out of his gob :woohoo: .also seen a guy blow a good king off there, fella gaffed the line, had the fish belly up,heartbreak ,he had the fish hooked deep we reckon which can make a difference.we had an excited school taking baits and lures there one morning and we didn't land a fish, bust offs galore .we were smashing lures and whole little squids on top of the water to excite t
  19. howdy snake, another tip for the kings mate is they don't mind a dead bait off the bottom.if you know there around a particular area in numbers and don't mind fishing into the night.fish a little bit of berely and lightly weighted baits or unweighted if conditions allow, particularly fresh squid strips, pillies, something that will move around a bit.goodluck with the quest, cheers
  20. howdy snapperhead,sounds like a gun outfit,awesome mate
  21. fish factory mate, raptis, all the bigger seafood joints gotem, can even barter a bit if your cheeky
  22. howdy rickster, sounds like they were frogmouth pillie size, haha.if you have the freezer space buy a 15 kg box of foodgrade premium pillies.can be split up quite easily and are awesome quality, can even eat them while out on the water .but seriously thats the cheapest way to go and you can go halves with a mate if you want aswell.buy some ziplock bags and you're good to go for many fishing trips
  23. depends on what type mate, neoprene or conventional.i got a pair of hornes chest high in the conventional and they are simply sensational.if you going to go this way,do yourself a favour and go direct to the manufacturer which is at wingfield.that way you can get a custom set,eg heavy duty boot.when i bought my set there was also talk of new materials coming out aswell.waders might not be a fashion statement but can make the difference when fishing for long extended periods.you need to be able kick them off so it also pays to go a few sizes bigger in the boot size and allow wearing trackies or
