  1. I was wondering what techniques folks use when fishing in the dark to determine when they are getting proper bites, strikes ect when not holding the rod?

Im primarily thinking about land based beach where the rod is left in a holder while waiting for things to happen.

I have used the little glow sticks near the rod tip but then you have to watch things. Other than that i use a correctly (?!)  set drag which generally stirs me up from a slumber when a fish grabs & runs. I must say that im not at all nocturnal and find night fishing really hard work, even in ideal conditions!

    Any other ideas out there?

  2. Good work. Love the improvised livewell  . i just use a mesh bag with a drawstring & toggle, tied to the wading tub but i bleed the ST & tommies straight away & chuck 'em in. Might be why the banjos, PJs & rays like me so much?

Oh, the juice also toughens them up a bit, which is handy. Although that may be an age thing. Do you know if they get gar up there? Don't think I've seen them mentioned in the flats reports

Yep but Ive only seen lil ones chased to the surface and have never targeted them. Have caught them on the flats with yfw rigs & bloodworms but that was Franklin Harbour, near Cowell!

Get in quick before the netters rape the place..   we watched last year at the same place them take a whole school of YFW..  blocked off the channel on an outgoing tide and the banged  on the hull of their net boat and hearded them in to the net..    caught bugger all fish the next few visits after that...

Yeah seen them do exactly the same :( .

  3. Alas it is pretty unfortunate that we require regulation enforcement officers to manage adherence to regulations that exist to (hopefully) to ensure sustainability of future fish stocks for all of us.

From my limited understanding they are very much under resourced-budget, funding, man power etc.

Over my fishing 'career'.....I have seen fisheries only twice,  once  last season and recently on my last wading session (last WE):  'Fish Watch' in the car park when we arrived, essentially providing an 'education' service, handing out regs brochures and crab measures, further explaining how to measure crabs (aided with some pretty cool laser cut metal 'crabs') and 'Fisheries' when we returned, checking catches and handing out (sadly) expiation notices to the usual crabbing culprits.

I understand Fish Watch are volunteers and Fisheries are on payroll?

I'd pay a rec licensing fee,  if it alone goes directly  to regular regulation enforcement ( :( sigh) .

Sadly i cant see it going anywhere other than the 'general treasury slush fund'.

  4. How my times have you taken a bag of cockles out for a session to then re-freeze most? Get them out for another trip and then repeat the process, only to find they have become the consistency of snot and fall of the hook?

Sure you could use them for burley or even chuck 'em in the bin. However with a bit of time and a bag of salt you can salt your own to further use as bait.

Why would you? They are much tougher holding on the hook more effectively, don't slime your fingers up and will last several re-freezes well. Plus you save a bit of money (cockles aren't cheap these days) and less wastage. They 'rehydrate' pretty quickly, so the fish don't seem to mind either.

    1. Empty the cockles on to bunch of newspaper and leave to drain for a couple of hours (I do it on the laundry floor, depends on the temperature, flys, dogs, missus ect)

    cockles1.jpg

    2. Pull the 'meat' out of the shells and spread them out on fresh newspaper. Leave for a couple of hrs again.

    cockles2.jpg

    3. Pour granulated salt on fresh newspaper and roll the cockles until they are roughly coated and spread them out evenly and leave for several hours or overnight. This may take 1/2 to 1 cup or more salt. (im also trialing salted bloodworm in this pic, from last year's 'metho-ed' supply)

    salt1.jpg

I use a granulated salt as opposed to a fine cooking salt or cheap pool salt.

    4. Repeat 3 a couple of more times, with a couple of tablespoons of salt and leave for an hour or so.

    5. By now they should be moist but firm, like a supple piece of leather. Either bag them up and freeze or dry them out further by spreading out on a tray and leaving uncovered in a frost-free freezer for a week or so and then bag up. Good luck with the latter, if the only frost-free one is in the kitchen (like mine)!

  5. Usually pretty standard 30lb single paternoster with 2 snooded 4/0s and a whole pillie or a double with surf popper on top. Not a very energetic beach, so 4oz stars should likely sufficient, with a swivel-snap to reduce line twist & sinker changes.

Fish as below good fun on lure.

    Jealous, wish i was there.

  6. For that Keenfisho I think they need to either have it in summer for the yellowfin or Bjorn needs to add StrikeHook waders to the store!

Very true mate but I think most people who would turn up would have waders already

Another month and i recon ill just about game the wetsuit. Waders suck-diddily-uck!

Ive done many summer sessions in nylon pants (UV protection) but prefer an longjohn (open shoulder) wetsuit any day.

  7. Cool! Been waiting for your report.

A new PB Pt Jacko  for me, must have been 1m+ :D. Does it count as 'hand caught'  and not rod&line?

A few little ones succumbed to the popper but all 40+cm STs on my last lot of 110mm Flickbaits and 1/4oz jig heads. Going to use 3.75&5in Zmans next time. Gulps are to soft and get smashed here.

  8. About 3 years ago now.

Desperate for a fish and headed out solo to the end of the Outer Harbour Breakwater for a lure session. Fell over badly on that slimy green crud, literary right at the end and landing on my hand and hip. Busted the reel (Sedona FD) and and bruised my hip bone. :censored:  fun walking back to the car!

Didn't get a single touch for my efforts but managed a pretty sore hip joint  for about 3 months :(

  9. Got down to the onka this morning for another shot at the bream, stepped outside the jeep & the wind cut thru me like a an ice cold knife i thought stuff it I'm to old for this $h1# got home had some lunch & after took the old girls dog golden retriever for a walk & we got attacked by 2 big dogs I kicked the livin $h1# out of them both & the owner retrieved them, (they got away from a little girl walking them in their driveway) mums golden had to go to the vet only bruised (thank ****) went to see the owners of the dogs ( i was ready for a punch up) & they couldnt have been more sorry & offered to pay all the vet bills we spent 20 minutes talking to them. I didnt threaten any legal action eg council dog control but if they dont pay i will go down that path. dont need this s*** with mums ill health at the moment.

mums just rang as i write this chance (retriever ) cant lay down with out pain & is whimpering, another vet visit coming up. wish i toughed it out down the onk now.

so thats my weekend. (this is the second dog attack we have experienced in a month).

    maybe try a pig sticker?

  10. Only done a few sessions. Another wade saturday gone and the STs were thick but only averaging 25-30cm when i wanted the bigger ones. Could only weed out 1 larger at 41cm even after upgrading to 5in Jerkshads which they just destoyed too quickly.

Might head to Deep Creek friday.

Couldnt find any bloodworms LB Sun and thankfully Piratepom gave us a live report and suggested it wasnt worth going last night!

  11. Would generally steer away from the Anaconda stuff.

That said i purchased a pair of their neoprene's, 40% off a while back and have just done my 3rd extended wading session and they've been dry and warm.

My first waders were a cheapish nylon brad and lasted many years untill the numerous pin-prick sized leaks became too much. I also found them wet due to perspiration and difficult to layer underneath as the hydrostatic pressure essentilly squeezed all the insulating air out of whatever i wore underneath and i got cold regardless.

Neoprene's offer their own insulation from the cold water.

Today was cold, 11-12 deg water temp http://oceancurrent.imos.org.au/Adelaide/2015071804.html

I had long john thermals and double socks underneath the Mojiko neoprene's and was nice and toasty. Dont know how long they will last tho.

When the weather warms up. Wetsuit all the way. Waders suck - a necesary evil!

  12. Off on a bit of a tangent. Caught most of my salmon over the last couple of years on a 1-3 kg Fireblade, Symetre 1000 & 6lb Sunline.

Something magic about fishing the surf. Finger's crossed I can get to KI this season and can workout a setup i havnt managed to use yet: 9' Allure, Symetre 4000, 15lb Powerpro.

I dont manage enough surf lure casting to imagine a deam setup but recon the Seajigger would be there.

Might add that Fireblade & Allure came from our "Buy, sell, Swap or Trade" section too :) .

  13. Bad luck mate! I finally got some good carp action last Night! Pics r crap though!! Phone is on its way out.... Hopefully I can salvage them for the comp! Been stuck in front of the iPad for two weeks now looking for a decent camera... Ended up buying a reel instead

    I hate reading!!!!!

But your photos have been crap for ages :D !

Not my specialty but something like the Panasonic Lumix comes to mind......shockproof & waterproof (to an extent) & decent burst mode.....even get Wi-Fi these days.

Camera House, Teds, Diamonds even Harldy Normal are all pretty competative unless your after a cheap 'grey import'.

    Oops off topic
