Well I'm back and after the plane didn't pick us up last Wednesday, we ended up having to spend an extra 3 days on Kiritimati fishing. Life is hard to take sometimes . Anyway as promised here are some pics of my trip and all I can say is this place is a fishermans paradise. For the trip I caught over 100 Bonefish (lost count), 7 Triggerfish, small GT's, Goatfish, Yellow Snapper and all sorts of reef species. Walking the flats and seeing Bonefish of around 10lb swimming at you in ankle deep water is a sight I will never forget. My best fish was approximately 5.5lb with all the rest averaging about 3lb or better. I had a few tussles with the big 10lb bruisers but they really like to run you through coral, which isn't really good on flylines and 12lb leaders :pinch: .Here are a few pics and all I can say is if you get a chance to fish on Kiritimati you will not be disappointed, it is one very beautiful place.Cheers Dazz

Headed out yesterday for a fish. Left WB around 11am, nice and calm conditions. Found a likely spot so just drifted for a while. Pulled in some decent squid. Dropped the burley bucket in and bought a large school of tommies around so dropped anchor and commenced catching lovely eating sized tommies along with plenty of sprats for bait.About half an hour later hooked up to my first gar, under size so back in it went, but after that it was all systems go, with some large red bill thrown into the mix.Had a whiting rod down too, just incase one cruised past, none did, but landed 4 XL leatheries that also found there way into the esky.Ended up with 37 gar, 20ish tommies, a dozen squid and the LJs to finish off the day. Winds picked right up around 4, then calmed off for 20 then picked right up and again and kept building from then on with 3 of the windmills at the wash bays going flatout.

For every new artificial reef that is laid or placed on the bottom you create food.I look at our snapper fishery and immediately think, to maintain large populations of predatory fish such as snapper you are going to need a lot of food. 20 years ago there was more scollaps, mussell beds and more sea grass beds to support food items.I think we are now at the point in this gulf that Snapper are having to eat practically any food item they find. Ie i have caught snapper that have barely had anything in their stomachs. Those snapper anglers that do use the artificial reefs successfully are normally anglers that have done some homework and know how to fish them, ie peek times and tides and using baits that are productive.I dont think having extra artificial reefs is going to give these people much more of a chance of catching these fish because as you would all be aware, snapper are mobile and you need to keep up to date with where the schools are as they move up and down the gulf to know which artificial reef is firing in a given month. The average mum and dad fisho, dont have access to that and dont put in enough time and effort. My view has and always will be, the more structure the more food - ie macks, prawns, crabs, mussells etc. Our gulf is primarily barren so the gulf needs as much help as it can.The more FAD's that are available just means the big schools have more spots to stop and get a feed. Its actually not that common for anglers to hit the common FADS/TYRE REEFS during daylight hours and bag out. Ocassionally it does happen but more often than not its by snapper anglers that have put many hours in fishing that one FAD.

Just been reading some of the thumper KG threads in this section & thought I'd share these.Fishie mentions in another thread the power hauling and netting that used to occur on the Stansbury Spit. For years all you could get inside the spit were undersized KGW, waste of time fishing there if you were after KGs. These 2 were caught back in early December, inside the spit in less than 3 metres of water. Both were caught using 6lb braid with 10lb mono trace and size 4 circles. Biggest (caught by the fair one) went 56cm, mine went 51cm. :woohoo: Dropped a similar size one at the boat the next day. Going back in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed.Cheers Wahoo

I been steaming crabs for years now, Cost ya a couple of dollars to make and about 10mins of your time if that Just get a piece of wire mesh the size of ya crab cooker. fold the corners so it sits 2cm above the base of the pot.Add a couple of cm of water, only takes 5mins or so to heat up. Allot quicker than boiling up 10ltrs of water or more.Put ya crabs in and steam away.Instant steamer

Looks like you had a great few days fishing there I went to victor chasing them on friday but they were nowhere to be seen all day bird action was very poor to.Most of the others crews didnt see them either that day.Was still a great day out there and a good learning curve out in the open ocean, deffinantly different seas compared to the metro waters, The swirl was only 2mtrs with a choppy seas on top of that, we were doing 45kmh and still couldnt keep up with the swirl and thats on a good day.

Day Two Tuna session: woke up to very calm morning, little did we know that the wind and swell was to pick up later. After the usual morning jobs....fishing for Whiting or whatever may come along and breakfast , we headed back to our "spot" if you can call trolling across several sq Km,s a spot, looking for birds, the feathered ones as well!! :woohoo: It was like the Americas cup trying to outfox the other boat and find the school first....out of no where came our triple hookup all three fished landed...The other skipper is fairly competitive and you could hear the :c expletives In two hours of fishing both boats had bagged out...time to head home.We had a following swell of a couple of meters but it was the cross chop around Althorpe Island that made things interesting, but being a conservative skipper with two crew to look after we made it back safe. Retrieving the boat at Marion Bay with the tide out and a cross wind made for interesting times but we even managed that. The locals had even bailed out of fishing that day. Confidence levels are a notch or two higher but I would still be hesitant in going that far without another boat as back up. Will try to load another vidCheers, from a happy fisho......

I know there have been a few posts about Tuna sessions lately , but just cant help myself , so here goes. Two boats- departed Marion Bay on Saturday after sleeping overnight. The bay was very calm which helped as I was a bit nervous about the 50 km trip across. As soon as we turned out of the bay the swell started, quite large but well spaced apart, and the Yalta handled it well.Took about 1.5 hrs of motoring before we got into the area where the Tuna supposedly were, the fact that one of the Marion Bay Charter boats was already working the area gave me some hope.My naive question to one of the crew who has fished for Tuna before re: how will I know when we have one on..his reply was "you'll know"" within 15 mins my rod was first to go off..had a hookup but within seconds the line and lure parted ways... I had three hookups in the morning for one bust off and two spitting the lure meanwhile we managed to boat two good fish and the other boat had bagged out. So off to our anchorage.I couldn't be the only one who did not catch one that day so after a bottom fish and the other skipper diving for crays, we took off early evening.Managed to hook up , and what a battle, had a few drag issues on the reel, and played this fish very safe, took me 30 back breaking mins but finally broke the drought.Equipment: All three were fishing with ABU 7000i 40lb braid 150lb leader my rod a Penn 6601 TLBM 8-10KGStay tuned for installment 2
