  1. Yeah 6-8 is a mully rod, not a yellowfin whiting. Grab a 2-4kg rod, something like a shimano raider ($120), daiwa crest spin ($90), pfluger trion ($120), or shimano sahara ($79). Cheaper if you get on special. BCF has two combos which are cheaper too, Shimano Sonic Pro rod with Sienna reel for $69, of a Shimano Solstace Catana combo for $99. Both are good combos to start with. Get a 7 foot rod and 2500 size reel. Spool it with 6-8lb braid or up to 10lb if you are worried about breaking strain. Braid tends to be a lot stronger than mono (but you do pay extra for it).Good luck
  2. No legal size limit in SA, stupid i know. I wouldnt be keeping anything small, useless for cleaning
  3. Light gear, 7 foot(ish) rod, 2000 size reel, 4-8lb line depending on your ability and experience. Little to no weight, i fish with a small running sinker just in case it gets windy. Size 2-6 hooks depending on size of carp around. If fishing the river use 2-4. Bread works well for me, just squash it onto the hook until it forms a ball. Some prefer corn as bait. Worms, and fresh water shrimp work well especially for bigger carp. Leave the drag set really loose and wait paitently. Carp tend to suck on the bait for a while before hooking themselves. So dont strike too early at nibbles. Leave the
  4. I've seen them caught in west lakes before ages ago. No reason to think they wouldn't still be there. Port Gawler also has them check a few links from "des". He is the master of that area.General rule is if there are flathead around there will be flounder. That's what i have read at least. Still to catch a legal flounder. I'm sure others may have different spots to try.
  5. Question if they do catch a shark to a baited drum and it dies from struggling. Won't the decaying carcass of a large animal attract more and even bigger sharks?? Just saying... morons.Of course its the Jetty fisherman who is to blame for the sharks being around, with his one hook in the ocean according to the state government. :c Leave the shark in his domain. Exercise caution when swimming and surfing.
  6. Bricks has it in one. Berley and poppers. Have caught many a tommies when fishing for YFW on poppers. Even locally, small tommies will smash a lure half their size. But i can see your point about fishing from a jetty with poppers could be hard. Maybe try and hard body metal lures that look like whitebait. "Gillies bait fish" has worked for me over on the Yorke peninsula so why not here locally
  7. Braid for most applications except for reefy bottoms where the braid can get wear and tear marks and weaken the raid. Braid has been my best move i've made since giving away the cheap jarvis walker outfits for proper shimano gear.Expensive i know to buy but its worth it, you wont be spooling up every year with new line. You might have to brush up on your knotts as you will need to put a backing of mono down on the spool first (unless you want to spend $30+ on 300m of braid, better getting 150m and making up the rest with backed mono). Any get some flurocarbon for a leader. You can use mono for
  8. As the others have said, cut the line, don't waste your time or the health of a fish for a hook. Cut as close to the hook as possible.
  9. Old video but a goodie. What i would give to be throwing a lure from that beach rather then fishing from west lakes tonight
  10. With the success Samboman has, i think he might be on to something
  11. what about a pfleuger trion?http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Pflueger-Trion-Spin-Rod-7-2-4kg.aspx?pid=135151&menuFrom=30101#DescriptionNice rods i have one it handles everything from 60cm carp to flicking soft plastics
  12. There are a few videos on youtube floating around with big salmon schools around fowlers bay. This one is brilliant cos the school is so close in. Great vid BigAsh, jealousy runs deep right now
  13. Tragic, even if it is only carp. Some decent size ones by the look of it. Look much better on the end of some 2kg braid.
  14. Would depend on your rod now Redbull. Soft plastics require a bit more whip in the rod, where metal bodies mean the rod can be a bit stiffer. I use a Shimano Raider 7 foot 6 rod 2-4kg for both. Although i have a Pflueger Trion i use for SP's if i am specifically targetting that type of fishing. Sounds like the rod you have will do the job without seeing it.Good luck, give it a go for the yellowfin whiting, they have started locally in better numbers.Give Tennyson a go if you feel like wading out with the bloodworm/tubeworm sp's on the high tide.
  15. Vivonne beach is worth a look. Weather can be pretty harsh for fishing but if you get a windy day there is a lagoon that is on the way to vivonne beach on the left that has a lot of different species to catch. Worth a try if its windy because it is protected.
  16. Spending your money on lures is important though, you can never have too many lures lol.You seem to be on the money. Salmon lures don't need to be expensive, the $5-7 metal blades seem to be the best especially from the beach, long casting and fast retrieval.Good luck
  17. Think you're going to need a bigger boat!!!!
  18. Any fishing show that focuses on "real" fishing, not just catching marlin. The majority of us fishers will never have the opportunity to catch a marlin so stop focusing on rubbish fishing and get back to the grass roots - whiting, salmon, mulloway, bream, etc. Also anything that is land based also gets the thumbs up, rock, beach fishing, etc.
