6 weight is good for carp..4 even better
Sounds like you have it dialed in now though.
Only suggestion for you is to watch those carp on light tippet. Can be done and lots of people tackle them on light gear BUT
they love to twist around and use their pectoral fins to try and pop the fly out of their mouth or snap the line. Can be very frustrating if you haven't landed a few before.
Consequently, you need to apply the right amount of pressure and rod angle to avoid losing the fish. Especially if using barbless hooks.

15 pound on 8 weight for Salmon is good. Even ten works if you can keep them from running under a shelf or brushing your line against the rocks.

Gee 60! Who would have ever thought! LOL! Sounds like it's time for a trip away, doing one of my other favourite pastimes, Fly Fishing for Trout! So it's decided a trip to my long time mate, Tommieee (45 yr's) place in the Bega Valley for my 60th, passing through the Snowy Mountains and one of the Mecca's for Trout in Australia, the Eucumbene River. So a couple of days fishing was included in the trip on the top of Australia. Now after not having fly fished for a long while, let alone in a fast flowing river, let's just say it was a steep learning curve. The fishing is a lot different than our single little still pools here in South Australia. So it was no surprise I had the wrong tackle for the job! Some friendly anglers saw my dilemma and kindly re-rigged my line with the correct gear and it wasn't long before I scored a fish! This became my 60th Birthday Tea and was delicious! + was the only fish kept for the trip. The wind & rain didn't stop much at all for our fishing sessions, but! we did get a calm before the storm when we arrived on the return trip, so I put the Quad up and got some great footage! So sit back grab a drink and enjoy 11 minutes on the roof of Australia fishing for spawn run Trout. Thanks for watching!

    Cheers Chuck

6wt will be fine. Use a floating line and gentle presentation. usually if they are feeding on the bottom then the fly needs to be dropped gently in front of them or in their path, usually just a little jiggle of the fly catches their attention. Too much movement or splashing often scares them. With floating bread flies I just chuck them out and wait for them to smash them.....

I have started doing more of this type of thing also.
Last thing I made was a rod tube that attaches to my bike. Bit of PVC pipe, the right fittings, glue, brackets and a hack saw it was all done for 20 bucks.
Doesn't look pretty but saved a bit of money.
What you did here is a great idea!

    Hi all.

Last few days I have been targeting carp on the fly. Been having a hell of a time but fun all the same.
I have managed to spot a Moby Dick of a carp in a spot down by the Torrens. I call him that because he is white in color with the markings of a Coi. Looks pretty cool. But he is a smart bastard. I swear he is working together with some of his friends swimming around. I'm starting to feel like captain Ahab chasing this one.

For example...blind cast to where I last saw him on his beat up and down...slow strip and sink..watching the end of the line...Nothing..something catches my eye..another carp worth casting too...pick up my retrieve to cast to the spotted carp..and wouldn't you know it there is Moby Dick checking out my wooly bugger while I'm distracted setting up a cast to the other carp. Obviously the fast stip spooked him off and his gone for a few hours.

Could go on but you get the picture.

Believe it or not a quick google and I was surprised to see that Carp are rather intelligent fish with some degree of learning capacity.
I'd like to say I'm smarter than a carp but at this stage they have got the better of me. HAHA

Got through these two in the last month.
All short stories so when your itching for a fish but you can't get out these books at least take the edge off for a bit.

Your heart and soul and every waking moment of conscious thought. Once you start you can't stop.
The money factor becomes immaterial once you start counting fish to fall asleep at night.
That 250 dollars for groceries will turn into a new rod that is justified spending as it will feed you with a catch of salmon or whiting or snapper. haha
    I could go on but..

Work on your technique. You will get there.
    For example:
I had a very short 4 weight with a rio intouch line. Was having trouble getting it to shoot out and lay a nice cast on some big water I was fishing.
Got frustrated as you do, looked to the equipment as an excuse.
My Dad picked up the rod and cast after cast had tight loops and accurate presentation. A few quick words and tips and following his example my casting dramatically improved.
Get your timing right and any decent rod will load up and shoot that line out. You will be able to notice the difference.

I wouldn't worry to much about distance here in SA. Majority of your fishing will be twig. Presentation over distance any day

May be able to get more distance, maybe not. Depending on what you are fishing for and where, distance rarely comes into it. The ability to cast short distance, accurately is more important most of the time. Go to the Rio site or speak to Keith on Port Rd. Super helpful and has a good range of gearfor all budgets and skill levels.
