  1. Hey All,

I know the 'Regatta' is currently on at WB as I've seen the signs well in advance. I tried to book my ticket for saturday and the 50 rec launches are already gone for saturday (all because of Recfish was this an option so thank you Ash).

I have just been made aware that North Haven had some issues on the weekend and it was reported on by channel 7 (went away so was oblivious to this) . Since this is my second ramp option, what was the main reason for the hold ups?

Is the regatta also taking up the NH ramp?

Honestly, why do we do sh*t half assed in this state! Build it and it'll get used for the future!

I mentioned the WB 'upgrade' 2 years ago, this should have always gone to 3 pontoons to support the growing demand and being the central ramp for the metro boaters, this should've been bigger and better than NH in ALL aspects but its not.

In my opinion, WB Boat ramp is NOT up to standard and is an incompetent ramp for the amount of traffic it gets.

Ramps needs to cater for the worst possible depth and at WB when its the lowest of low tides, you can only dock 1 average sized boat at a time (17 footer). Considering 1 side of the 'right' ramp is for launching outside peak times, that's only 3 boats exiting every 10mins by the time you dock, walk to the car, back in and put the boat on the trailer (that's not even considering those who cant do the latter 2 competently). Typically, from 11.30am-1.30pm when majority of the time the seabreeze kicks in (in summer), and everyone wants to get home or want to escape the intense heat 20-30 odd boats can be seen manoeuvring around waiting their turn to come in, mostly in open ocean. It's not good enough!

The breakwater area is WAY too small area, the pontoons aren't deep enough, we need atleast another pontoon if not 2 for this ramp.

The mind boggles to think this was 'upgraded' 2 years ago for $5mil and the only noticeable improvement are the new pontoons and cleats.

Oh and finally the 'drainage' of the washdown area has finally improved somewhat in 17 years too.

NH on the other hand, perfect amount of ramps. Ramp surface needs upgrading as there are potholes everywhere.

Being a marina, atleast if you get 'caught out' in a sudden change of weather you are secluded and safe in the marina.

Rigging area is not great and too small.

Wash down area is deplorable with the 'drive through' method and only 5 or 6 taps from memory. Put 2x20footer boats in and 1 tap will be missed.

This area needs to be relocated from the ramp area near the entry/exit to keep the 'traffic area' flowing.

    Apologies for my rant all.

    Any thoughts?

  2. Well, where do I start.

I managed to get out on the boat on Australia day and launch at the so called 'new and improved'.

On the fishing front, it was very slow and didn't do well. But more importantly the ramp itself (I was curious to see what the improvements were).

First of all, I couldn't believe my eyes that $5million was spent to 'upgrade' the ramp. On what??

To dig a few more deeper holes for the new pylons? Come on!

To put on a steel capping to 3/4 of the the existing steel divider wall where sailing club boats launch?

the pontoons were meant to go out deeper... I don't so and IF it does, we're talking centimeters not meters. This does not help with launching and retrieving on low tides and will still take the standard 10mins minimum to retrieve per boat (by the time you dock, walk to the car and retrieve), which is WAY too long when 30 boats want to come back when the weather turns.

I've been involved in the concrete industry for 17 years and lucky enough to work with one of the original persons who helped construct the first concrete slabs for the ramp. The new precast concrete floor slabs are a joke. Mark my words, in a year or 2 time, when the algae growth starts on them, there will be cars sliding into the water if the cars are borderline to boat weight ration. These slabs should have NEVER been a 'smooth' finish. They need to be abrasive / grippy and whoever managed to convince the designers to 'cut in the grooves' after the panel was constructed, is an imbecile. What an absolute joke.

I've been harping on about it, but how there wasn't a 3rd pontoon added is a lost opportunity to make this ramp the best ramp in metro Adelaide.

Some of the original pontoons were kept and re-used. Fine. But the least you could do is apply new rubber edging so its all uniform with the new ones.

The pay machines, 1 is out of order and the other you can barley see the screen, yet you want $15 to launch.

Good to see the useless wind turbines disappear in the wash down area, another waste of time and money experiment.

We want to visually see a change, improvement and get bang for our buck. Apart from the new precast slabs, they have purely just polished a turd!

    What an embarrassment!

    End of Rant.

    Yep typical.

If council want something to show they are doing good, they will refuse to hear any negatives and just do want they want anyway.

And probably costs them about 500k a year to dredge it 🤦‍♂️

The sad thing is, I've seen 'new' drawings for an 'upgrade' recently.

The only thing that I see changing is removing the old 'tyre grip' concrete slabs to new ones.

It needs a massive overhaul! Needs to go deeper because at low tide around 11.30-1 in summer is horrendous (1 maybe 2 smaller boats dock only), a 3rd lane added and a massive breakwater with 1 entry / exit point.

Something like this should happen I think.

now, if the 500k worth of fingerlings, becomes 1.5 million in return once they grow and overall biomass increases then doesnt everyone win?

its like the kingfish pens on a larger scale but boosting a fish stock which would be that abundant if not fished for commercially.

    Keyword there IF...

These fingerlings will not reach sexual maturity for another 3-4 years.

That's 3-4 years of avoiding predators, nets etc.

So you're still relying on the 'original' stocks by the time the ban is lifted again.

  5. It's nice to hear we've acted swiftly to get the first step sorted with the fingerlings (just over 12 months) 👏. expected this to be released just as the ban finished 😆

Hopefully our government can take a leaf out of the Vic book (in banning all commercial net fishing of Port Phillip Bay) and do something similar here in our gulfs and passages. Perhaps going one step further and ban long lining in these zones also.

I don't have an issue with charters with in these zones, but maybe put a stricter limit especially to the larger snapper above 80cm. Maybe 2 fish max per boat above 80cm as well as a minimum 25% cut to their limits.
Your paying to go on a charter for the experience as well as catching some fish to take home for a feed (not a month worth of food so to speak).

    That's my 2 cents.

  6. Not saying i'm a pro, VERY far from it.

But 6 years ago I caught my first 2 snapper in metro waters. The next 2 seasons were relatively consistent (at best maybe 25 fish).

The past 3-4 years if we came back with 12 fish total, i'd say we'd be lucky (with the largest being a 2-3kg specimen).

I've been saying it for many years, REC fishers have a very minor if not nothing to do with the demise of the fish stocks.

Not all of us catch 1 let alone our limit when we go out. Not all of us have the big boats that can go out when the sea is average. The average REC fisher works 5-6 days a week and is limited to go out when the weather is good (mainly during the week it seems of late).

All the 'Pro's' know where the fish are. They do it everyday when seas permit. But the long liners are a different kettle of fish.

Once the sun goes down, they do what they want and where they want. I've seen them long line at Grange and at the Glenelg TR when season opens for the first 4 weeks.

These should be off limits to the long liners. These were created for the Rec fishers!

The government should be creating man made reefs all around the coast to give ALL species a chance to hide  and reproduce rather than select places. Only a matter of time till the pro's find them with the quality of sounders that are out today and only getting better.

And it should be the same with the PRO crab boat too. Makes me sick seeing 50ft+ boat hauling 2x2m cages every 200m so close to metro waters.

This too has repercussions to the snapper stocks as its a food source for the snapper.

    Ok end of rant.

  7. I have 2 pairs of designated fishing spotters sunnies that i tried on and bought.

If your using them for fishing mainly, try them on. at some stage, you'll look down into the water and if they are not a 'snug fit' you'll lose them at some stage.

Bought my first pair atleast 6 years ago at Whitworths and the second pair, 3 years ago at the 4wd and boat show for 20% off. Virtually scratch resistant and cops salt water spray on a regular basis but after a clean, back to brand new.

Sure, your looking at around $200 for a pair of sunnies but if you use them constantly, its a good investment.

Just wait for for someone to have a 20% off storewide sale 😎

  8. I wonder how the conversation went...

If you exclude us from 2 new zones, let us rape the zone that has always been been off limits.

    oh ok deal!!!!

Just ban all 3 zones and be done with it!!

The pro's have screwed themselves, by over fishing from previous years and are now crying as there are no fish and cant make a 'living'!

How serious are they about 'preserving the fish stocks for our grandchildren to catch one day'.

Not that serious by the sounds of it.

  9. I have only used carp for crab bait before and my usual catch rate during peak time was not met and therefore, vowed never to use it again (this was probably due to the pro's raping the area but hey 😂).

In terms of burley, i'd like to say no however, i dont make my own and have bought the 'burley blocks' from Ray & Annes and Tackleworld.

I have some suspicion there would be traces of carp in them.

  10. This video is out of Victoria!

It makes me sick to know that in Victoria, arguably the 2 most desired / targeted species in snapper and KGW, have a legal limit of 27cm at 28cm!!!!

I dont understand how you could get that excited over a 28cm pinky. A 33cm whiting will fight harder than a 28cm pinky but anyway.

I have no doubt you will catch them on Carp flesh.

As others have said above, if snapper are hungry, they will eat anything

I'm no snapper expert but have caught them on all sorts of baits; Silver whiting, tommies, KGW frames, mackeral, yacs, squid, pilchards, garfish.

My dad is old school and his side of the boat will always be baited. i have invested in some decent tackle and on my side I use soft plastics (Zmans or gulps).

I jig and reel at times but alot of the times it's sitting in the rod holder and the waves do the rest while i tie new rigs and hooks.

In the past 4 years i can honestly say it'll be a 1:5 ratio for us. If we catch a snapper (which isn't every outing i might add), majority of the time the soft plastics will win. Only that 1 time we will catch on bait.

I might also add that the 'dropped fish' rate is also quite alarming. The soft plastics rarely foul hook or drop a fish with only 3 fish lost in 7 seasons (1 wind against tide and lost the fish at the surface due to getting hooked to the anchor rope, 1 being bit through the leader and 1 i managed to get it half way up and lost.

Apologies if i may have hi-jacked the carp thread, just looking at it from another perspective and to knock the Victorians 😉

  11. I wish i had this problem 😋

I've only had the pleasure of having this problem once in about 5 years.

As mentioned above, we just used a standard fine tooth hand saw (cleaned ofcourse). At the end of the day, you will still cook out any slight germs that may stick around.
