  1. I've got 2 shimano baitrunner D s in the 4000 size and they are great. The D series is a bit lighter than the old B series. I am very happy with mine and they do the job. They are only slightly heavier than the equivalent size shimano reel. The saltigas are 3 to 4 times the price and are much better reels.Depends if you need the baitrunner feature and want to spend the cash for a saltiga.
  2. http://www.strikehook.com/forum/63-off-topic/91691-how-many-have-you-gotI've got over 30 rods now My favourites are 2 custom built Hasting PUR 70UL with Titanium SIC guides, 2 custom built Kilwel Penduum 1 surf rods, 2 custom built kilwel livefibre threadline rods for the Kayak A pair of ultra light 10 foot threadline rods built up on 9 weight fly blanks. And the starlo stix and daiwa sensor surfs are very good value for money.Currently I am building a pair of graphite surf spin rods with lowrider guides.
  3. I have seen them in August before, but not in any numbers. I usually don't go for them till we get at least 2 straight weeks of hot weather (usually October)
  4. The original Sun articlehttp://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3079749/Man-f-eel-ing-blue-after-op.htmlAnd another one from a few months backhttp://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2954500/Chef-dies-after-feeling-eel.htmlSimilar article from the spoofhttp://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s3i74155http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s3i80035Sounds to me like another version of the gerbil mythhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerbilling
  5. http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/68884/faq_berleying_april_2008_final.pdfQ. What about the use of small amounts of meat for berley or bait when targeting fish such as mullet?A. The intent of the law is to minimise the impact berleying may have on attracting sharks to areas close to other water users. It is considered unlikely that these products will have significant attractant properties and so they will be dealt with in the same manner as commercial berley. Compliance officers will use their discretion in weighing up the circumstances of its use.
  6. Small pieces of chicken or steak for bait are fine
  7. Other reels to consider is a Spheros 1400 FB or upgraded FA and also the Saragosa
  8. Have seen them stored in old film canisters with a few holes punched in the lid and packed with saw dust.
  9. What is your budget. Are you looking for graphite or glass and do you want something aroung 9 to 10 foot or 12 foot or longer?I use 2x 9 foot starlo stix matched to a stradic 4000 and a stradic 5000. I also have a pair of shimano baitruner D 4000 which also fit very nicely. For around $100 each for the rods I am happy with them.Ray and Annes have the 10 foot sensor surf spin rods going for $179 which would also be great.
  10. After first fixing a few guide over the years, last year I started building a few rods from scratch. I have build up a few 9 and 10 foot fly rod blanks into threadline rods and built a pair of Kilwel Pendulum 1 threadline rods, and also built some 7foot kilwell live fibres into kayak rods. Now I am building my 9th and 10th rod at the moment. I have found a pair of Hastings PUR 70 UL going cheap and am building a pair of bream rods. Have already assembled the reel seat and cork grips and will put some TATSG guides on them shortly. It is great fun, and you can customise to get exactly what you wa
  11. Very nice DarrenGives me a few ideas to do a mini saltwater yabbie version on a size 10 hook for the YFW.
  12. Here's a bigger one caught from a Yakhttp://www.akff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=37143&start=0
  13. No reason why it won't work. Many years ago in Canberra, a few local fishers did ok on the Golden Perch using small pilchards.Plenty of native fish have been caught over the years on red meat, rabbit, chicken and even cheese. One theory is that its not the bait itself, but rather the shrimps and yabbies that the bait attracts that attracts the fish.
  14. I usually only bring 2 rods out with me when I kayak. I use threadline outfits with 6lb braid and fish with a good quality snap so I can change rigs. I troll small minnow lures when traveling to spots, then can quickly change to a squid jig, gar rig, whiting rig.You could easily do 95% of your fishing with only 2 outfits.

  16. I did enjoy that.Although if you look at the link at the bottom, I think the score is 1 eachhttp://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2009/11/05/98401_ntnews.html
  17. Double your main line, Bimini twist, then loop to loop on the wind on.

  19. Great burley. Ok bait, but very soft and hard to keep on the hook. I have caught some nice bream on mussels.
  20. "in Gulf St Vincent within 600 metres of high water mark between Outer Harbour (southern most breakwater) and Gulf View Road, Christies Beach (where the Port Noarlunga Aquatic Reserve commences) – spears are not allowed to be used unless south of Onkaparinga Head"http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/fisheries/recreational_fishing/fishing_gear/permitted_devices#SpearNeed to be south of the mouth of the onk. Any of the reef and rocky headlands hold fish. Have caught a few leatherjackets, magpie perch and strong fish with my bro this time last year with a polespear.
  21. No need for shockleader if you are fishing 50lb braid mainline. Also are you using and powercasting technique (OTC, pendulum etc) or just an overhead thumb? Normal casting does not put much pressure on knots, while powercasting can frequently lead to snap offs without a casting shock leader.
  22. Great for casting light baits such as unweighted pilchards. Not as well suited to lure fishing
  23. A 4kg salmon on 8lb sounds like fun.For lure fishing off the beach I use size 4000 and size 5000 stradics. I've got about 200m of 12lb braid and about 50m of 20lb mono backing. I find this is light enough for me to still use the same outfits for gar and tommies off the jetty, but has enough strength to tackle a decent salmon.
