  1. KL are great as are the owner mutu circle hooks. I know some guys also like the mustad light demon circle hooks I use circles but also don't mind small baitholder hooks or go old school and use the mustad bloodworm longshanks in 6 or 4 Mainly paternoster with as light a sinker as I can get away with. 1 hook below the sinker and 1 or 2 above
  2. For pilchards I just put frozen pilchards in a container, cover in salt, let them thaw and soak for 12 to 24hrs, then drain on newspaper and place in freezer. Brine gets reused or mixed with pellets for burley.
  3. I am very particular about my hooks as they make a big difference. I've got a few hundred of my favourite Mustad bloodworm hooks and longshank baitholders. They are a few good Ebay brands out there but it is trial an error. For my shallow water snapper fishing I use an octopus circle hook by DFS. I can lose an average of over a dozen hooks fishing over shallow reef and this soon adds up if using Gamas. The DFS circles are less than half the price and just as sharp and I have had great hookup rates with them.
  4. Low tide. Head out to the sandbank. Good stinkbait in a bag and they should be everywhere
  5. All Metro beaches hold worms. Tennyson will have heaps. The problem is not finding the worms but catching them.
  6. Non drag longcast spool threadlines are mainly for tournament casting as the lack of drag eliminates spool slippage (and finger cuts) during power casting.
  7. In Daiwa reels, size 1000 and 2000 are interchangeable. I use a Certate Custom Finesse 2004 spool on my Luvias 1000 and it fits fine. Any 2500 size is interchangeable 2506, 2508, 2500 etc.
  8. Base of the mangroves under shade is good. You want to be above the high water mark in an area that the weed had deposited and decomposed for a very long time. The worms will be on the sand right where the weed is starting to breakdown and can be 50cm or more deep down. If you are still digging through rotting weed you may not be deep enough, keep going down till you have nice cool sand layer and the worms should be right above. If no luck move down the beach 10m and dig again. Once you find one you can usually get heaps.
  9. I don't (can't) use overheads. For my landbased snapper work I use Saltiga Surfs, Daiwa Excellors and Shinamo Baitrunner Ds. Any large spool threadline will be nicer to cast but a longcast spool is best. It depends how far you need to cast.
  10. Nice sized mullet, must have been fun

    New Combo

Landbased or boat? Bait or lure? If you mainly fish landbased and bait then I recommend an 8 to 10 foot rod. Starlostix shore spin if on a budget, daiwa seabass or seajigger if you have the coin.
  12. Any update on there? They are going cheap at the moment. $15 from memory
  13. Any roofrack will hold a yak, the main thing will be getting good tie downs and if travelling at speed or long distance also securing the bow and stern. The hullavator is a luxury as it saves your back and you only have to lift the yak to waist height. But they cost more than some cheap yaks.
  14. How much do you want to spend? I used to just flip my yak upsidedown on the roof racks. I have now upgraded to a Thule Hulavator
  15. Most of the snags are due to the hooks catching bottom. For my landbased work I use 20lb braid and 30lb trace and keep to a single 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook. The single smaller circle seems to snag less. Also using heavier braid and trace, I can sometimes give a slow pull when snagged and straighten the hook a bit and get my rig back. Also using smaller hooks and smaller bait I can get more distance on the cast. Is your spot Metro?
  16. Worms everywhere tonight
  17. I've also smoked some Nannies that had been in the freezer a few months and they tasted good. Salt and brown sugar brine and smoked whole
  18. Any snapper recipe will work well. Last Nanny I cooked whole I put some chilli, ginger, coriander, and splash of soy and baked in the oven and turned out great.
  19. light threadline outfit, 7 foot rod, 6lb braid or lighter if you can. Trace from 4lb to 10lb. 2 inch or 2 inch gulp minnow size jig head about 1/8 or lighter. Cast out and slow retrieve. Sometimes you need to follow the school. Or bait, pilchard cube, half pilchard, whitebait. No or very light sinker, 8lb trace and a longer rod to cast the lighter bait. Hook size to match the bait. Size 6 for whitebait upto 2/0 for 1/2 pilchards. You should get plenty of distance with a pilchard chunk,. Fish right near the end, watch the locals.
  20. Also fish one or two spots and learn how to catch fish there at different times of the tide, day and year. Find a spot where people are getting fish and be inquisitive but polite. Eg. St Kilda Breakwall at dawn on a high tide for ST. Watch how the locals fish, what lures/bait and line they use. Don't get in their way but ask a few questions. Adelaide Metro landbased is not easy to fish, but the fish are there.
