    Snelled Ganged Hooks

A wire trace is another option. Bust offs on what fish/circumstances & chasing what fish?
  2. Halco sliced metal snook lure or any sliced metal lure works without fail when trolling. I use a lead line rather than a paravane. Also 3 ganged 1/0 hooks with a thin strip of stream lined fish bait works good as does the swim bladder of the first snook you catch. When catching Gar & there are a few about, cast out a bibbed lure or even a soft plastic well behind the Gar & often you will get a snook or two. I prefer a bibbed lure as they will destroy a soft plastic.
  3. All of the above...Hallett Cove off the rocks is good. Need clear water. Always berley I reckon similar to gar berley. Off boat or kayak is usually easier as you can move around to find.

    WINTER GARFISH

You can still float fish Gar in winter, but I would throw in a burley pot first to see if any are around or just float fish as normal. Sometimes you may get some, sometimes only tommies or salmon trout. Gar are bigger & fatter fishing the sea bed in winter. So you can do both & see what is working on the day. You can use a cabbage weed type bait in thin strands, but just easier to use gents or other baits already mentioned.

    WINTER GARFISH

For winter Gar, you fish the the bottom as you would for Whiting. The rig is a sinker clipped to a swivel at the top of the trace, & a cork at the bottom of the rig where the sinker would be for a paternoster rig. Then 1 or 2 hooks in between & still use gents. When the sinker hits the bottom, the cork will float the bait off the bottom & you get your Gar. Gar are normally a bottom weed eating fish hence the green goop that comes out of the backside. They stick around the ocean floor in winter.
  6. "Slivers of Garfish I've never tried this, but I've heard good reports of taking a few slivers off the first garfish you catch and using this as bait. This is suggested as a way to mix up your bait if the garfish are being timid". Yep this works. Also dip into their green poop - with all baits. Slivers off pilchard woks great as well. The rubber gents also work. Also slivers off cockles & cheese. A touch of aniseed can stir them up. Also when timid, no float. Just hook & bait at the back of boat drifting naturally with the current.

    Wind Knots

Wouldn't the reel specs show how many shims there should be etc? Then you would know if one is missing or put together incorrectly...

    Cockles

Probably imported mud cockles by the looks. Definitely not "goolwa" cockles. I would have thought SA Bait & Tackle would only supply good quality bait..........
  9. All good. Maybe the "Fishing Guru" can donate a small prize or two??
  10. ...Not to mention the monies they get from Developers to bolster their political agendas.....
  11. Not only do commercials make more noise, they provide funds to the political parties......& are in cahoots with the whole corrupt system which includes PIRSA. Money talks, decisions made in stealth without any transparency and you just get told - these are the new rules....All just BS & totally wrong.
  12. No reason why YF Whiting would not have a go..........
  13. ....Just wear a heat proof glove?? Why would a torch heat up that much that you cannot hold it ??
  14. I saw an interview with the fisher who one this amount the other year....Just crazy amount of money but worth the effort if you win....
  15. That is correct. Raw chicken slithers work wonders on many fish, including KG Whiting..
  16. When they use/try many of the lines themselves & spool up different reels, they have a pretty good idea IMO. At least they can provide some helpful info.
  17. A good knowledgeable tackle store owner can assist with all the lines and thickness etc etc.
  18. Believe it or not, I have fished with a partially opened cockle, enough to get a long shank hook into the flesh inside the cockle & caught whiting this way. An old salty suggested I try this......

    My Squid Rig

My favourite squid set up by far is using a paternoster rig. Sinker on the bottom & squid jig on a quick change swivel above about 1m or so above the sinker. Sometimes I'll use 2 squid jigs on a 2m+ above the sinker if squid a thick & get double headers.

  21. You can always try small pilchard pieces, prawn pieces or whiting snatchers. Blood worms & tubeworms (salted) can also work really well. I have used small pieces of trumpeter flesh (skinned) which has also worked. Mashed up/soft squid pieces are really good generally. The other thing I also do is put cockle flesh in a jar with salt & leave in the shed fridge. They last forever, become really smelly & stay on the hook really well. Half a cockle is usually enough as the flesh becomes really firm. Just stock up on cockles as you can afford them & eventually you will have a h
  22. ....Also with easy cooking, head & gut, then use a rolling pin to flatten, belly side down, a bit of salt & pepper, fry in frypan with a little oil & done. Peel back the backbone & eat. There will be a few pin bones but have bread handy as this helps if bones are hanging around in mouth/throat. Otherwise fillet or butterfly if you dont want any bones (like my kids).
  23. Artificial maggots/gents work. I think Berkley was the brand I used. Basically plastic look alike gents. Either rub them with a pilchard or when you catch the first one, rub in their green poop or even dip into tuna oil or just use as they are. If no live gents onboard, then just as easy to use small slivers of cockle, pilchard, soften squid, fish flesh, worm etc. The key I find is to start with no float or weight & play with the rig until it works on the day with only a small amount of berley. Often the larger ones are further back. Also, when there are plenty of gar about, there is
  24. Well at least they are doing something albeit a drip in the ocean. Its all about perception but in the long run, longlining needs to be banned to stop the rape & pillage - simple as that. This is not restocking IMO. No where near enough being released if this is what they think will help!!. This should have started when the ban came in & many, many, many more thousands. We will see what happens. Is this just a once off or an ongoing project? Who will monitor this....etc. etc. I have been sounding several pro grounds as I pass them in GSV since the ban & have generally seen ple
