its the end with the bulbs that get the hottest but is a short torch, so that means your hands are quite close, if not touching that end.

In winter it would probably be pleasant to have a warm tool in your hands but not on the recent balmy Melbourne nights - we've got an over night low of 24c coming up.

The mount isnt just to protect your hand - these torches have internal sensors which will automatically dim the torch when it gets too hot - so making a mount will also increase air flow around the torch and hopefully keep it cooler so it can run at higher settings for longer.

And lastly - they are quite heavy - 500g - doesnt sound like much but it will wear you down on an out stretched arm over a few hours - so the mount keeps your wrist at a much more comfortable angle on long spotting sessions. Thats why I originally made a similar mount, for my first torch of similar design. Just to make it more comfortable to use.

I'm almost always pointing the torch down into water - so if you drop your arms by your side and imagine you are pointing that torch on a downward angle - you have to crank your wrist a bit to light up the water at your feet. Thats where the pistol grip really comes into its own

....Just wear a heat proof glove??
Why would a torch heat up that much that you cannot hold it ??

That is correct. Raw chicken slithers work wonders on many fish, including KG Whiting..

    Yes, technically.
But they have turned a blind eye (that I have witnessed twice) if using slithers of red meat/chicken or mince as bait on a hook.

When they use/try many of the lines themselves & spool up different reels, they have a pretty good idea IMO. At least they can provide some helpful info.

Believe it or not, I have fished with a partially opened cockle, enough to get a long shank hook into the flesh inside the cockle & caught whiting this way. An old salty suggested I try this......

If you can not use fresh, local mussels for bait because they are sold for human consumption, fisheries need to get off their ass and fix it. How can you sell wild bred cockles that are under commercial pressure and not mussels that are farmed, both grown in SA? Maybe it would be a good idea, to reduce the cockle quota and start encouraging companies to grow our bait. When cockle that are just taken are $22 a kg for bait and mussels that are farmed are $8 a kg for human consumption, some thing is very wrong.

Could this be the ultimate jetty tackle box ?.
By adding a cooler bag to the bottom section with some ice to keep food or bait cool would be handy on those hotter days, plenty of room to store some warmer clothing or wet weather gear.Room for torch spare reel, rags and water for washing hands.Throw in some storage trays with squid lures weights hooks and swivels. On the lid you could put on a cutting board and ruler for measuring fish.
Or use the cutting board for filleting fish or squid while waiting for the next one and throw them into the cooler. This box is weather proof and will not rust also you could hook on one of those alloy lightweight folding chairs to the box so you only have to carry a few rods in one hand and the other on the box handle. These will fit on the back seat of the car standing upright and just put the safety belt on it to keep it in place.
Bunnings have these and in the link they have a video.

Can't believe how big the business got - it was just getting too hard to manage while working full time. Actually used 7 tons of lead last year - crazy!!

Not sure if the above FB link will work, but it shows heaps of worms coming out of the ground using a serrated stick being rubbed.

You can always try small pilchard pieces, prawn pieces or whiting snatchers. Blood worms & tubeworms (salted) can also work really well. I have used small pieces of trumpeter flesh (skinned) which has also worked. Mashed up/soft squid pieces are really good generally.
The other thing I also do is put cockle flesh in a jar with salt & leave in the shed fridge. They last forever, become really smelly & stay on the hook really well. Half a cockle is usually enough as the flesh becomes really firm. Just stock up on cockles as you can afford them & eventually you will have a heap of jars ready to go from the fridge.
I usually buy a 20kg sack & go halves with my mate so the initial cost is a bit but last a long time overall if you "pickle" most of them. With squid, I buy in 5 kilo blocks & split up into say half kilo packs which also last a long time. Just some ideas you can try.

....Also with easy cooking, head & gut, then use a rolling pin to flatten, belly side down, a bit of salt & pepper, fry in frypan with a little oil & done. Peel back the backbone & eat. There will be a few pin bones but have bread handy as this helps if bones are hanging around in mouth/throat. Otherwise fillet or butterfly if you dont want any bones (like my kids).

Artificial maggots/gents work. I think Berkley was the brand I used. Basically plastic look alike gents. Either rub them with a pilchard or when you catch the first one, rub in their green poop or even dip into tuna oil or just use as they are.
If no live gents onboard, then just as easy to use small slivers of cockle, pilchard, soften squid, fish flesh, worm etc. The key I find is to start with no float or weight & play with the rig until it works on the day with only a small amount of berley. Often the larger ones are further back. Also, when there are plenty of gar about, there is a good chance snook are snooping about, so always worth while casting a lure well out the back or sides & wind in.

Well at least they are doing something albeit a drip in the ocean. Its all about perception but in the long run, longlining needs to be banned to stop the rape & pillage - simple as that. This is not restocking IMO. No where near enough being released if this is what they think will help!!. This should have started when the ban came in & many, many, many more thousands. We will see what happens. Is this just a once off or an ongoing project? Who will monitor this....etc. etc.
I have been sounding several pro grounds as I pass them in GSV since the ban & have generally seen plenty of fish schooled up so from my observations, the numbers seem to be good on most grounds.
