    Great effort Des.
Water temp, dodge and a nice ripple on the water is a great combination for the YFW.

I like fishing the Dodge tides for Yellow Fin Whiting.

I posted a detailed explanation of the factors in this post:
    https://www.strikehook.com/index.php?/forums/topic/38765-dodgy-days/
    .
So to start the New Year with a couple of days of dodge tides was something to look forward to.
It was a sunny day. The water temperatures were up there, at around 23C. The small tide was perfect to hold and concentrate the fish for me.
I went to work with my trusty Sugapen 95 in the MB16 colour. And there was plenty of interest straight away.
Pretty soon the polite enquiries towards my lure became full blown, “I’ll take that. Thanks.”
There was a purple patch in which I took 10 fish in the first hour of fishing. The temperature, the tide, the sun, and a perfect stiff breeze, all had the YFW at their aggressive best.
It got competitive with the YFW. What a delightful sight it is to see a gang of YFW all trying to shoulder each other out of the way, competing to be the first to jump onto your lure skipping on the surface.
Sometimes in a tight contest, there is close second. And so it was when two YFW hit my lure together.

For many I unusually use two sets of Assist hooks on my larger lures. I have Atomic Trick Bitz #8 hooks on the rear and Ecogear ZX hooks in the middle. In about 40% of cases the YFW will hit the middle assist hook. And when there is competition and a close race you wind up with a Double Header on a lure !

A special experience that I have been lucky to have had a couple of times previously. In the past, they have been mostly the smaller supper eager inexperienced fish.
Today they were quality fish. It was a struggle bringing them in … oooh! maybe a new PB. It turned out to be two quality fish at 35cm and 38cm. Both well hooked on the same lure.

I enjoyed that purple patch, for not long, as soon the wind came in stronger and stronger and the fishing got harder and harder. When it got to 20-25 knots wading got impossible and the fish no where to be seen.
I was able to bag 17 fish before the wind shooed them all away.

This is the prime time of the year for big YFW whiting. As the high water temperatures hold a lot of new season’s juvenile prawns in the shallows. And they are the right sized meal for the big ravenous YFW. Most fish caught were over 35cm and 3 fish were around 40cm.

Can’t wait for the next dodge tide. Hopefully the weather and wind will also be favourable.
    .
Happy New Year and Tight Lines to all.
    .
    Cheers, Des

    Very unfortunate for sure.
However, Softy should get down there for some fish - after all, he doesn't catch much and this would be an easy score for him

I do a similar thing. When my partner deems the bath towels are too old/worn and need replacing, I take them and cut them into 3-4 hand towel sizes, overlock the edges to stop them fraying and sew on a small loop to attach a carabiner. A couple of bath towels makes 6-8 fishing towels. I've got a box full of fishing towels, and take one for handling fish and another for wiping my hands. I give them soak in napisan/sodium percarbonate when I get home as they get pretty stinky and my partner doesn't appreciate me chucking them into the laundry basket.

Yeah in the past, Ive tended to keep things simple and I was mainly catch and release for alot of years. So I didnt have a chance to get bored of my recipes.

But since discovering redfin are delicious, Ive been thinking of branching out

    I'm a basic fish cooker.
Generally just some S&P and maybe some lemon juice.
Sometimes will use some instant batter mix for more of crunch.
Have a deep fryer but not used much due to having to put 3lt of oil in just to have it at a minimum level

Investigation into hundreds of dead fish found on popular Adelaide beach
An investigation is underway after hundreds of dead fish, believed to be anchovies or sardines, washed up on a well-known stretch of sand.

An investigation is underway after thousands of dead fish washed up on a popular beach.
Beachgoers who travelled to Semaphore Beach in Adelaide over the weekend were met with a stinky surprise after the fish washed up on the sand.
The fish are believed to be sardines or anchovies.
The cause of the mass fish death is unknown, but the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) has kicked off an investigation into the incident.

“PIRSA is aware of dead fish being reported in the Point Malcolm area and are investigating the cause,” the department told NCA NewsWire in a statement.
The department said events which kill a large number of fish could be due to several reasons.
“In general, fish-kill events can happen due changes to environmental factors such as temperature, salinity or oxygen levels, or through the introduction of disease or pollutants,” PIRSA said.
Once images of the dead fish circulated to social media, many users shared their own theories.
“I used to work along that section of beach and on a couple of occasions I’ve come across large schools of white bait landlocked in a pool, with a sandbar preventing them from returning to deeper water,” one user wrote.

“Unfortunately, the shallow pools heat up and the fish die.”
Another claimed the fish were trying to escape a predator and “got caught” when the tide went back out.
Meanwhile, another person said it was a result of recent storm activity.
“All the polluted water washing out to sea from the rains,” one person wrote.
PIRSA urges anyone who comes across “unusual numbers of dead fish” to contact FISHWATCH on 1800 065 522.

Your Saragosa has good and not so good impact on your rod choice I think. At around 700 grams it narrows down your options which is good in a way. No overthinking required! Its a big reel and is right at home knocking off a heap of larger models. It is overkill for snapper but like you said, you have it already. Doobs mentioned catching his first snapper on my gear and it was a nice fish but it was a tuna outfit and he made short work of it!!! That was a 6000 Shimano on a T curve Deep Jig 200.  Again, huge overkill for snapper but it is a brilliant allrounder for offshore work. Troll the tuna in the morning and bottom bash for nannies and whatever comes along in the arvo. Still sensitive enough to feel the bites on bait. The Terez range has a heap of rods in that 7 foot ish range in 1 and 2 piece. The TZS70M might be worth a look.  I'd head to a loaded tackle shop with reel in hand and try a few.

I've only caught 1 snapper in my life - on someone elses boat and someone elses rod - so I'm no help for you 😅
That someone else is @Gregtech and he has some good rods and seems to have good knowledge of them too.
If he sees your post he may have some good input for you.

I  want to buy a new Snapper rod for the boat, the more I  research the more complicated it gets. I want a spinning rod, around 7', probably carbon fibre.  I have a Saragosa 10000 reel I will be using, yes its big but I  already have it, so it's what will be going on. I  was looking at a Terez, but  I  seen a lot of reports of them snapping.  I will be using the rod for chasing other species as well. Mostly bait fishing.  Looking for a rod around $300 Any suggestions would help.

Hi there I'm in Port Hughes for work over the next 6 months and wanted to know where I can catch beach worms on the York Peninsula?

Maybe north of Moonta Bay there might be some seaweed mounds you can dig up and find some. We don't get the long worms that you bait in the shallows there. Just the small type under seaweed mounds. Take a shovel.

    Hi all.
I went out today. Just went local... Walked the out going and the incomming.. Was a long day....
Water was warm, clear and a little tape weed about.. Winds were all over the place.. Was 15ks first thing so a noisy lure was the go. As the wind dropped off I went to my searching lure..
Not many about,, They were not in groups.. Only one here and there.. And they were not really interested in lures. I managed 1 @ 36cm and fat.. Lost 2.. Me stuffing around with drag and weed..
Heaps of nice mullet about smashing lures. Nice sizes to.. 28cm and fat.. Lots of very small Silvers about.. Agressive little buggers today.. A few puffers about...
Seen heaps of decent YFW as the tide turned when I was walking in.. But way too much fast moving weed.. I tried and failed.. Same thing.. One here and there and not really in groups.. But they were big.. And a few nice KGW swimming about as well..
Lost 1 lure and changed spools 3 times.. Wind knots./snap off....
    Was a good day....
    Mike
