have seen what Bigmac suggested on TV and it worked!when I worked as a maintenance fitter my mates had me slicing stainless round bar on an angle, polishing and drilling for them to use on the west coast. Must have worked as they kept coming back for more & always had heaps of fish. Not a cheap option unless the Govt still supplies the stainless.

Poppa Snake reacted to Jack. in Snapper or Mulloway
What's your poison? Snapper or Mulloway... & why??For fight, fun and personal satisfaction, my reasonably new obsession (year or so) has been the elusive mulloway. These things are just so accessible! The mulloway are basically just under our noses and are there in huge numbers from what I understand Where as regular snapper catches require a boat capable of riding a bit of chop, Mulloway are a landbased, kayak and beaten up tinny species! Great! Some people may say Snapper fight harder/better, and I used to say this too. But thinking about it, they fight just a bit differently. Mulloway are ambush feeders and I guess that, as such, they are geared for short bursts of power and rage. So you hook one and the bugga will bolt... Even a littleun will run a bit of line at first. Then they either play possum or just chill for a bit and off they go again, usually I find with q bit of thought about direction the second time, like at structure, or pulling at a sharp angle running accross you. :)This is pretty cool, but the snapper will just KEEP on fighting to the net. I really think there's not too much of a difference in quality of fight when alls done infact, I would take a 20lb mulloway fight up a little mangrove creek over lifting a 20lb snapper from 20 meters down any day I've been a bit of a snapper tragic for most of my fishing life... But an eventful couple of sessions recently had me scratching my head. I had the great fortune of capturing a mulloway one week and a snapper a couple weeks later in more of less the same place on the same gear.I was fishing in some tight water among the mangroves. With the tide full on both occasions, it would have been all of 3m of water. Both times I chucked out a stinky old pilchard on two 6/0 hooks. 40lb trace, 30lb braid, 6-10kg rod, same reel. By myself both times. When.I.hooked the mulloway, I called it for a mulloway, had a heart pounding but enjoyable few minutes and happily boated it 20lb Now when I hooked the snapper, it's not surprising that I called it for a mully. The fight was very similar really, but just a little more spirited. When I had it half way in, I started to think it may be a snapper, cos of the extra knocking and the lack of any reel break between runs. But because it was mulloway territory, I was getting a bit excited thinking that maybe it was a bigger mully than I am used to! 10meters from the boat the fish still had heaps of gas and it took a little while before it was beaten and I had him boatside... Alot different from yer average mulloway battle. In the end, I was a little disappointed that it was a snapper15lb) and not a mully. I was obviously happy and stoked to get a nice fish, and it was a bit different, but yeah, I think Mulloway are something a bit special to me now :)And of course a massive draw card for me is the.potential to go XOS on a mulloway and capture something EPIC.... Until then happy fishin'

A lot of theories being thrown around but it really comes down to the location and the conditions. Its these that dictate what you use. I personally am fishing in small shallow creeks so I go for the lightest jighead I can get which is 1/8 7/0 TT's. However if the tide is running quick which it can do I go up to 1/2 oz. You fish to suit the conditions. Also the style of tail you use makes a difference, paddletails require more weight to get the action working in them. Stick or jerk baits have no action it needs to be imparted by the angler so thats why you can get away with less weight.Really it all comes down to knowing whats going on below the surface and whats needed to get the fish to eat your lure. When it comes to colour I find that I change my mind regularly and the shade I was using a few years ago I now dont even have in my bag. Last years favourite is gone and I have a new colour I go to first so really Im beginning to think its more in the fishos mind than the fish. One last thing I think is the most important thing to get right is correct rigging. You really do need to get them on straight. Even the slightest little kink in the plastic makes a difference so dont cast till you are happy with how it sits on the jighead. If in doubt have a test swim and make sure its swimmimg right.Did I hear someone mention dead sticking......... Now for hard bodies One word suspend cheerssnapps

I love this type of thread, when Mulloway gurus like Jack & snapperhead (+ others) give little insights into some of their successful fishing techniques. I read it, take it in, and if I get the chance I will test out some of the theories. :f The video show a slightly different technique, one that would seem slightly more logical than a Mulloway taking Soft Plastics off the bottom, but from my limited Bream and SP experiences that’s exactly what the Bream do! IMHO it’s what fishing is all about, learning and trying different techniques and then personally nailing a particular fish with a specific technique, but until then it’s just theories, myths and rumours. Cheers for the video TT97 and nice fish NickMav.

I missed some of the discussion with a professor this morning but what I caught was -marine parks & no fish zones basically dont do anything as there have been 429 introduced species into Aust waters and NO losses to extinction. The worst problems are urban pollution, pests brought in by shipping ballast water and live imports of exotic speciesLand parks are different because this is to stop strip clearing of the habitat of animals/birds etc for farming/development etc and there has been 49 species of animals/mammals & birds lost.FISHING DOESNT REQUIRE CLEARING OF HABITATShope some of you fishos heard more & can updatethanx Andrew

Close in or further out, fish resources are a finite thing, and Im sure you'd realise at least soemthing of how the food chain works.Any interference in it has a ripple effect

To further this discussuion on marine parks restrictions and no fishing zones, it now appears that there could be a deal being done between Norway and Australia to allow a norwegian fishing vessel to enter Australian waters and fish in some of the otherwise restricted areas. This topic was apparently om the Leon Viner radio talk back show yesterday [tuesday].I did not hear the conversation myself but was told about it.If anyone out heard the show could you please confirm it one way or the other thanks Chris.

Spose the river may be a bit different as in depth shouldn't be a factorBut I myself will not lift a big cod (20+lbs) out of the water .Now I love to eat Callop more than any other fish ...squid still top them...But any Callop I catch over 44cm goes back My rule is ...Hold your breath when you take a fish out the water When you need another breath ...The fish needs flowing water through its gillsI fish to feed me and my family and will take what is legal to take. But at the same time try to look after our big breedersI love upper size limits for freshwater
