That's interesting keen fisho I need a 7 ft rod to cast further I've a Diawa 6ft9 rod doesn't cast as far as a shimano 7 ft
Mind you I haven't paid huge amounts
I saw on the Diawa fishing show on fox a 7 ft 6 rod guides same material as the rod .
But I tried in Adelaide never had it tried to offer me a different Diawa rod 600 or 700 bucks too much for me
Alas, there's a lot more to casting distance than length of rod! Action, balance, weight, reel matching, line......... I wont pretend to understand how this works.

Veritas & Trion are good value rods and should suit well. However for that price range I'd be having a look at the Gen Blacks too. Will add that I have no experience with any of those 3.
Personally, I don't like the Veritas 'cause it is 'white' & don't like the Trion 'cause of the 'cork' !
Have had a in-store fiddle with the Gen Blacks and recon one would replace my current 1-3kg, if the need arose.
I have an Abu veritable 7'2 2-4kg that I used to use on the flats. I don't use it much anymore as I use my Azuza 1-3kg 6' bream stick that is lighter and I can cast further.
That Azusa's a sweet stick, but a different price bracket!

I hate wearing waders and avoid them for as long into the cooler weather as i can! I don't care about being dry as long as i'm not cold. Give me some neoprene booties/shorts/thermals/fleece jumper/beanie/waterproof jacket for the surf stuff.
Otherwise, if i had a 12mm 'long john' wettie and i'd be laughing! I love the freedom afforded by a wetsuit. You never get 'swamped', as you can swim anytime you get a bit over zealous. However it's the ability to take a wizz whenever that is sooooo convenient!
My fist pair were a cheapish pair of Shakespear's that lasted much longer than i thought they would (5ish years). I patched 1 hole and then a increasing number of pin prick holes eventually made them unusable.I replaced these with a pair of 'El cheapo Mojiko nylons which i've yet to wear, were 40% off so super cheap.
Last year, i also bought a pair of Mojiko neoprenes. I hate Anaconda but also at 40% off, i thought they were a reasonable gamble to test (the usually waaay more expensive) neoprene style. I used these 5+ times wading for salmon last winter (ie in waist deep water at <12deg for 2+hrs at a time) and they performed well. First time i wore thermal longs underneath and was too hot, especially walking out. 2nd time i just went undies and the sweat/condensation on my legs was too uncomfortable. 3rd time i wore my 2XU tights and they were magic! Not sure how well they will last but will certainly be giving them a good run once the water temp is down again.

Sorry underpants dont mind my rant if you were tlking about locals with a high price for hookems
LOL Was just about to clarify that one!
Also was going to add that your recommendation of a Topshot should be highly regarded, given your love of the toothys.....not to mention ballsy Crazy Horse ventures!

I love to support a local but it is a bit sad that they cant even start with being vaguely competitive! No questions id be voting with my wallet too and go elsewhere!
Have you explained you can get it from Qld & asked them to try to close the gap in price? Should always try to support the locals but they should also try to support you.
G'day
The gap was so wide I didn't think it was worth it and ordered 2 hookem's one 1500 x 4" and one 1500 x 3" $205 delivered
Cheers
Rod
Man that's pretty good service, especially once you add the 'over size' postage.

Used the new Symetre Saturday, loaded up with a 35 & 38cm ST plus heaps around just legal.
Just chucked the old spool on the new reel. Super smooth so easy to forget how good they are 'supposed' to feel!

I have a Precision Pak vest and love it.
Will never need to wash it and if I do I will just hose it down and hang it in the sun.
Got a Cranka Crab that escaped from its packaging and settled in nicely in one of the pockets.....gonna need some surgery to get that little bugger free.
Other than that, cannot fault it....well ventilated, easy to use and so far only smells like aniseed...I have had it for two years or more and use it very often.
Cost about 100 bucks from St Kilda Tackle and Tucker.
Worth checking out.
You gonna model that one for us Tinks?

Not exactly but id go along the lines of fish cakes. In real simple terms:
- drain & flake the meat
- mix in a bowl with whatever flavorings you like
- bind with egg & breadcrumbs.
- roll into desired sized balls, flatten a little & roll in breadcrumbs.
- Deepfry ......shalllow fry if you must .
Some further ideas:
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/17143/thai+style+fish+cakes
As im assuming the crab meat is cooked, it will likely require a little more egg/breadcrumbs for binding. So something like:
http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/6771/fish+cakes
I dont like the idea of that much potato tho, i recon 1:4 rather than 1:1, potato:crab would be better. Plus i'd probably lean towards the more Asian spice flavorings, personal taste there.
How about Crab Linguine, kinda like Marinara but with that sweet crab meat?

Id be adding a cup of dry white wine (and reducing) to that one too.

Bought a Symetre 1000FL last night, using the "spend $100 get $20 off" deal from a certain retail chain. Now will have at 2 spools if i cant get the older reel running satisfactorily.
Im actually really surprised with the comments been said about the siennas.
My personal experience with them has been nothing but bad.
Drag clickers breaking drag not working. Not smooth. Feel cheap etc.
Guess bad luck on my part i guessHad the drag clicker brake on a 2500, as this was not replaceable, meant a new spool - or reel in this case given the negligible price difference! Replaced with a Sedona, which i then fell on and broke. Good thing these spools were interchangeable so the Sienna is still going strong, just with the Sedona spool!

A super easy fish curry is one of my faves. Korma is a mild curry that lets the fish flavour to carry thru.
I usually use vac-packed salmon, but an otherwise great way of using up those ‘mystery fillets’ that appear out of the depths of the freezer from time to time.
Ingredients:
- 500g diced fish
- 2-3 tbls korma paste
- 2 onions, diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tsp ginger, minced
- 1cup chicken/fish stock
- ½ tin crushed tomatoes
- ¼ cup Coconut cream
- Oil
Method:
- Fry onions and garlic add ginger and paste and fry for a minute or so, until aromatic.
- Turn down low, add stock& tomato and simmer for ½ hr or so, reducing until it thickens & just starts to stick.
- Stir in coconut cream.
- Turn the stove off and stir in the fish. Cover with lid and leave on the stove.
- Stir after a minute and check fish is cooked.
- Serve with steamed rice & pappadams.
Hints:
- I use Sharwood’s korma paste from the supermarket as I’ve found it to be lowest in sodium, so not overpoweringly salty like some are.
- Coconut cream of a fat content >20% gives a great texture & flavour. Personal taste tho. Never cook coconut cream/milk for long as it will separate into a gross oil slick.
- The residual heat cooks the fish. I find there’s enough heat on my ceramic cook top, may need a bit more on gas/induction, may need to take off an electric element/plate stove.
This time i found a jar of Goan Eggplant Pickle, i made last year. magic

Worth checking out SA Angler for Alex's metro bream article.
His first project for a fishing mag, and I doubt it will be his last.
Current edition, in shops now.
Had to make an exception to not buying the 'Club Mensforth' mag just to read Alex's article. (they could've got the contents numbering right , too many ed?)
Great work Alex! It's been fantastic sharing your experiences; watching you learn and develop your skills over the last couple of years. A true joy and inspiration to all

ATC Valliant 2000: 5.2:1, 8+1 bearings, Carbon drag washers & 7kg drag!. Very curious.....plus ive never heard of them! Anyone local stock them so i can have a feel?
2000 a bit big tho and still recon i'll lean towards a Shimano 1000.

Need to replace the reel on my 1-3kg outfit.
The current Shimano Symetre FL 1000 is 'grabbing' somehow in the retrieve , making it near impossible to work the light lures. I have stripped & lubed twice now, inc bearings for it to return to the same condition after a couple of sessions. Too much time wasted!
Don't want to spend big $ as this is used 90% wading, where it undoubtedly gets splashed more than it should and i cant see a $200 reel being any better than $100 in this regard.
Im not 'brandist' but have generally been a Shimano man....dumb question , what is the equivalent sized Daiwa to a Shimano 1000?
At this stage im leaning towards a Sedona FD 1000 (have a 2500 for years which just wont die). With the new Sedona FE now out the remaining FDs are good value too ($54.95 from SneakyFisho)
Thoughts?

Ive been using Black Magic Snap Swivels, pulling the snaps off for luring and saving the swivels for tying rigs.

Easier to reliably find and do exactly what i want!
