  1. Very interesting topic. Especially when bream and small mullies have been smashing pillies off the hook at West Lakes recently. Couldn't keep bait on the hooks for longer than 3-4 minutes. 20kgs is a lot of pillies though, worth buying in bulk if you can store them. Out of interest are the pillies mentioned above also available brined?
  2. Basically the same setup I use for bait and lure applications. Usually run 1-1.2m of flouro from the swivel to the hook for bait, slightly longer for lures. Never run your swivels through the eyelets. Small snap swivels in black are best, and swivels reduce line twist in the braid mainline.
  3. Solid fish, both of them. That bream is a once in a blue moon fish, can only imagine the fight it would have put up. Keep living the dream mate, and hope you get another PB soon.
  4. Looks like you guys are having to much fun. Nah, then again, there is no such thing. Awesome pic of the bay.
  5. When you start talking curries, you are speaka my language. Gotta tell you mate, I don't eat the fish I catch, though I did have a nice snapper fillet last night in a lemon pepper breadcrumb mix. Was bloody yummy, but after reading your recipe, I'm gonna give it a stab on the rest of the snapper I have. You're making me hungry just thinking about it.
  6. Cheap hooks bend and snap too easily. And you have to sharpen them. I'm hooked on Owner mutu circle hooks for my baitfishing. 9/10 times the fish hook themselves and they almost guarantee a lip hooked fish. For heavier fishing I swear by Gamakatsu, coz they stay sharp longer, and they seem stronger than other brands. Been burnt too many times by dodgy hooks.
  7. Looks like it was worth the effort going out mate. Curious to know if anyone can fill me in, is it still okay to fish and take fish in national parks? I always thought they were a no go zone. Could be wrong....
  8. Was in among the mangroves, fishing the narrow channel. Not many YFWs in there, but good sized bream. Don't fish the flats at Pt Gawler, too afraid to walk too far from my car. They catch fire very easily around that way for some reason.
  9. Ironic you say that mate coz this morning I was fishing Port Gawler. Can't wait to explore it in my boat, bit restricted being landbased.
  10. Only stops vessels 130m or longer. Still, it's good news all the same. I just hope there isn't a sting in the tail.
  11. Hope you get out for a Xmas fish mate. I snuck out early this morning for a flick and nailed a 39er, which is a decent Xmas pressie to myself. On the trusty Z-Man grub again, this time in watermelon red. And now I have a boat, the search will be on to beat my 42cm PB, just need to do some more recon in the Port system. Hope you and your family have a great Xmas and a safe and happy new year full of PBs.
  12. I use Owner Mutu circle hooks size 4 or 6. Circles almost guarantee a lip hooked fish, and when loaded with corn, bread or tiger worms, they always hook themselves. Fish a light leader with very low drag or an open bail arm, when they run, strike. If fishing light, I recommend a landing net. Be prepared with an assortment of bait as mentioned above, if they don't bite on one they will on another.
  13. Yet another very enjoyable report mate, always look forward to your weekend fishing fix. Some big bream in amongst the sticks near GI, can't wait til I get my tinny in the next week or so so I can explore them further. Though I have given up on the boardwalk at Garden Island, I think it is just too overfished, sometimes you will spot a horse or two poking around underneath. Keep at it Alex, you will get your 40 soon, and congrats on the 39cm PB.
  14. Drooling all over my keyboard.... That pork belly looks delish.
  15. Being a born again fly fisho, I would have thought some browns would go cuda in a smoker. Or will I be seeing you up north on the St Kilda breakwater chasing sambos and snook? Let us all know how you go mate. Sorry I don't have any secret smoker recipes.
  16. Congratulations Station, a top notch report and pics more than deserving a prize. And well judged Mods.
  17. I will be focusing on the big blue lip breambos that I have seen cruising in there. Also heard about big mullies occasionally getting through the gates, and a school of salmon cruising around. The structure in that place is phenomenal, and most of it is within casting distance of the shore. Only problem I had there is getting distracted by all the cute chicks walking by....My Bad. Hopefully night sessions on the Pat help me keep my attention on my fishing.
  18. Another top notch report mate. I see you are getting the hours up in the Pat, have to admit it is a nice place to fish. Planning another Pat sesh soon, though I am thinking of trying at night, especially a nice warm summer night. Congrats on getting your first on fly, hope you get many more.
  19. Excellent report and pics mate, very well done. The trout look brilliant but that carp really takes the cake, probably one of the biggest I have ever seen. Would have taken some real skill to land, especially using that trout net. Magic stuff.
  20. Port River has bloodworms too. Hard yakka digging in soft black stinky mud, but fish like YFW and bream go nuts for them.
  21. 65 is a decent slab of mudsucker. At a guess I would say easily 4-5kgs, and on fly for the first time. I don't fly fish and never have, but I know the effort you guys put into learning and mastering the art of fly. Got my respect mate.
  22. Nice one Bjorn. Been thinking bout targeting some mullies on some nice warm nights coming our way. Probably won't catch as many or as easily as SmokeyKebab and young Alex, but as I say, it's not quantity, it's quality. That's what my ex girlfriend used to say as well, but she didn't like fishing so I traded her in for some crab nets....
  23. I don't name my gear, but I do talk to it, and I also talk to fish. I'm not mentally unbalanced or anything....yet, I just really get into my fishing, and love getting all intimate with a fish and cuddling it while I gently remove the hooks. I think you will find quite a few fish crazies on this site. Though I have given up licking windows, even though it tastes nice.....
  24. Got to admit, decent prawns are hard to find at most bait and tackle stores. Supermarket prawns are much firmer and usually haven't been frozen 3-4 times, and they smell a 5hitload better too. If you can get things sussed, then are legally able to supply a 3-5kg lots of fresh prawns, I will definitely be interested. Just send me a PM when its sorted. Big bream love a fresh prawn.
