they're a bit quiet at the moment due to the cold weather.any of the local beaches should be allright, but........the weather will have a fair bit to say about that.you'll probably also get some salmon trout from the beaches, if you're beach or jetty fishing.look for the more 'calmer' beaches, that have nice big sandy bottoms and weedy areas nearby.they dont have to be very deep areas (between 2 to 6 feet deep).good baits are;cockles, prawns/nippers, worms.try small beach rods with 8 to 12 lb line, small star sinkers if its nice and calm, medium star sinkers if its rougher/windy, size 6 to 4 (smallish) long shank hooks. and deck chairs. times = late mornings, late arvo's, but depends where you go.

This is a really interesting topic. In the past I have used chicken, steak, bacon, and even pepperoni when I ran out of bait once.Since the new shark laws came into effect, I have been using only chicken breast in small strips as bait, as it seems many others do the same.I didn't think I was attracting sharks at all using chicken because of its low blood content. And I never use it on jetties or around swimmers.I never thought I was breaking the law.Be a shame if I can't use good old chicken, because it really is a gun bait on bream and flathead.

gilbert reacted to Ugly4Life in St Kilda - Chapman Creek Aquatic Reserve open for land based fishing!
Morning Hookers! Today I have some exciting news; the St Kilda - Chapman's Creek aquatic reserve has been lifted for land based fishing as of midnight last night. The reserve has been there for approximately 25 years and this morning Minister Gago, Lisa Vlahos (Member for Taylor) and Susan Close (Member for Port Adelaide) came down to announce that it has now been opened. What this means is that it is now legal for people to fish and crab, land based, on the right hand side of the St Kilda break wall and all along the water front of the right hand side. Some things to be aware of:Bait digging and fishing (other than land based) are still prohibited as are collecting or removing any bottom dwelling organism other than Blue Swimmer Crabs which may be taken by rake/hand/hoop net. A full fact sheet is available from St Kilda Tackle & Tucker or available here.Get out there and get stuck into them. I personally reckon the Flathead fishing will be great in some of the little channels and troughs that form on turn of the tides.Edit: There was supposed to be a pic to go with this, but it doesn't seem to like me today.

your berley washing ashore shouldnt be a problem with an outgoing, the only thing you'd have to worry about is the waves receding back far enough that your pot is out of the water. A simple berley pot (can be an orange sack or hessian sack as well) tied to rope would do for the pot. To make sure it doesn't float away put some sinkers or rocks in the bottom and it'll hold on the bottom.Rod holders for the beach don't have to be complicated, I've used pvc pipe for years with success as long as the sand is relatively soft you shouldn't have a problem getting it in the ground. And if you don't have the option of making the pot before going out something as simple as a rock you pick up on your way out will do just fine, just tie a loop around one end of the rope and tie it onto the rock like a noose. Can even do it with your tackle box/bag as long as conditions aren't too rough it'll hold a treat. The wave action will help disperse the berley on an outgoing tide from the waves receding underneath once it hits the shore, it'll take the berley out into the ocean. the occasional tug on the rope will help to break up the contents/create a quick release of your berley as well. What some people do for beach fishing is when the tide is low they'll actually bury fish frames/berley underneath the sand and when the tide comes in it will slowly bring the sand off that and even before that it will be releasing scent into the water. One other tip is to find out which way the berley will be drifting as it wont always go straight out to the sea, more often it will go either to the left or right. to test this simply drop a small piece of bait and watch which way it drifts so you aren't casting on the wrong side of the berley pot, you could have the current going to the right while you fish the left of the berley pot and only pick up the odd fish that goes away from the school whereas on the right you could be getting constant bites

I have used small rock crabs on a single size 1 hook attached to a rod length of 4lb fluorocarbon leader. Proved good on the legal bream, using two or three small ones if large ones cant be found.

try some 40mm (or there abouts) mid depth diving minnows or similar, with a medium speed retrieval.if they bite but not hook up, let it sit for 1 second, and start again.but this may not work out every day.so far i've had god success with orange sides and a dark top, or a pale clear side with a green top colour range.the strike pro bream tour 4gram hard bodies seem ok.make sure they have good trebles.one fish bent a hook, another fish bent another hook (on a cheap lure).the lure colour was perfect, but it had cheap trebles.the only problem with the 40mm hardbodies is that the fish occasionally shook them selves off due to the small trebles with small barbs.cast with the wind though as the small hard bodies go further out.

A good starting point is the Berkeley Gulp range, as the fish will even pick it up off the bottom and eat it, even when you put your rod down.Gulp 6" worms are great for Bream, as are the pepper prawns and banana prawns.Squidgies have always been a firm favourite for many anglers, but there's any range of plastics out there which will all do the job.Don't go telling everyone, but I still use the trusted old Atomic 2" Fatgrubs, and they still pull fish.If you're new to plastics select anything with a curl tail, as the tail will impart a swimming action into the lure, even if your own technique is a little lacking.2" up to 3" for Bream, and try to "match the hatch"....if you see small baitfish, select a lure which looks similar to them.A big thing with soft plastics is to actually have confidence in the lure you are using, and fish it as if you know a fish is gonna take it.

Gilbert, blades and vibes are awesome for Bream (and for Redfin in the freshwater), especially in deep water. You do tend to snag up a bit though bouncing them off the bottom, so expect to lose a few.As recommended the Ecogear VX35's are awesome. As you lift you'll feel the thing vibrate. If you feel that vibe you're doing it correctly. In the colder weather (ie: now) the Bream tend to go deep, in holes, channels and around the base of pylons, etc, so blades are perfect for getting right down and just jigging near the bottom. The trick for Bream is to go very SLOWLY, with lots of pauses. If you want any tips or advice on lures and techniques for Bream, sing out and maybe we can get together sometime...it's a big learning curve when you're first starting out, so you'll need to learn a few different lines, knots, techniques, maybe even a whole new outfit specifically suited to the game.

vx35 ecogears and strike pros are probably the best quality, long cast, hold rod tip high, do VERY SHORT lifts,, 10 o'clock to 11 o'clock , once you feel the lure vibrate drop it down straight away let it sit on bottom for 2-5 seconds while watching line for flicks(bites) and repeat! long lifts are for mulloway short lifts for bream
