creeky23 0
Just a quick question, When do you like to use Mono as opposed to braid and why? I hear braid is not as popular these days and people are heading back towards the ol Mono line!
urhookedfish 12
I like to use Mono when fishing inshore snapper drops with big baits and livies. I use the Berkley Big game mono as its similar to fluro carbon in that its practically clear or Platypus Lo-Stretch as its almost clear in colour as well.Braid I like to use on all dedicated snapper soft plastic outfits. Im trying to steer clear of really really bright braids, as snapper hit the plastics hard so their is not much need for finess, and no real need to see the line that well in my opinion.I also like to use braid for trout, but I like a natural colour braid that cant be seen too easily by the trout. So I use fireline in green and have found that it has faded fairly quickly to a colour that is pretty stealthy and doesnt spook the trout. I use braid to have a better feel for the lure action and feel any hits straight away, although you could easily get away with running a full spool of flurocarbon for trout no problems and Ive considered doing this but havent tried it as yet.I must also add that I use very long leaders with my braid for that very reason. I think fish are getting more easily spooked these days and if you want to catch big fish then the more stealth you use the better.Brett :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
AliKat 0
Monocostoldschool, used to it,to lazy to learn the knots,so many spools i had to have! at the time to use up.Ali urhookedfish
aldingabeachfisho 1
I only ever use mono in the surf , for a.few reasons that its not as sensitive and waves crashing don't trick you in thinking you got a bite lol and the wind factor no wind knots etc as well as its not as susceptible to breaking from anything abrasive
snake 1
i use braid for all my lure fishing and mono for bait fishing especially when chasing fish in the surf, nothing worse than a small piece of seaweed producing mega knots in braid on the beach...cheers snake
rooboy123 9
Yeah Im a bit like Snake. I try to use mono in the surf as much as I can. Ive grown up with braid a fair bit so the stretch in mono gives me the $hits sometimes. All my other outfits have braid and leader, even my bottom bashing bait outfits. Guess im too used to braid to go back to mono. urhookedfish

Softy 2,991
How about for sharking?I have to get my new TLD25 spooled up shortly, and can't decide between braid or mono. With braid ill get my line on the spool, but mono will be a bit more forgiving if i get dragged over some reef or something.
drewfish 0
I prefer using mono when im hooked onto a big fish, and yes its more forgiving then the braid when that big fish takes a run. But my snapper and bream set ups are all braid because i like the feel everything through the rod.
southie THE BANGA 2,304
i use mono for the surf and when jetty fishing... especially chasing the bigger fish... braid i use mainly for my smaller fish...
thefunkychicken 0
The only reels I have mono on are the Alvey and a big overhead. The spin reels and my one baitcaster all have braid on them ranging from 4 to 40lb.Cheers.Tight lines (be they braid or mono...) jagger 24
After squidding all arvo in the boat yesterday, nust say I preferred the feel of the lure with mono.Couple of reasons....you don't want to set the hook hard and fast like you would with a snapper on a plastic, the extra stretch gently sets the hooks without ripping tenticles off.I also reckon the action of the lure due to the weight would look better from mono than the sharpness of a braid flick.Light weight jags (50mm etc) I would prefer braid though and would run a long leader.Apart from that..braid pretty much all the way unless throwing 40gm slugs all day for salmon then my finger tips thank me for using mono ! Del 245
braid on all my small spin reels, mono on my large spin reels and mono on my alveys..

smokeykebab 175
mono on jettys and rocks for the abrasion resistance. braid most of the other times in the surf and off shore. braid was expensive 5 years ago but online prices and even now in store its not that much more expensive then mono. the benefits of braid are worth the few extra bucks. Ive recently put Platypus Lo Stretch on a spool for this purpose. Same thing as you, I was sick of sore fingers on cold days, and also a bit lazy with tying leader knots after a long session casting. nickmav 0
id use braid, if ure balloning out miles youd want that direct contact to set hooks. alot of mono = alot of strech.
