The ones with the black spots on them? They work so well that they're almost unfair.

What annoys me about the big mags is commercialism. Talk more about bait fishing and easily accessible types/forms of fishing and I'll buy it.

Hi ArcherFish,I'm Louis and the Designer for FL magazine.Definitely agree that we are entering a pretty crowded market but we are trying to do a different style of magazine. We're NOT a big publishing house with a long list of titles to our name. We're a small publication formed by fishing journos with a passion for fishing. We'd love to get feedback from you guys to help us steer the magazine in the right direction.CheersLouis

Definitely and without a doubt my favourite lure for the past year or so has been the Daiwa Double Clutch. These are absolute Salmon killers and also work very well on the Snook. The colours I go for are the Phantom and the Blue Smelt.

bjorn2fish reacted to SAFTAG in local fish tagging
Hi All. Just a couple of notes to clarify some doubts, hereabouts.1) Cod and Callop are on the approved list. However, we DO NOT encourage tagging of fish outside normal open seasons etc. If the regs suggest that Cod must not be taken, then they shouldn't be targetted. Generally Cod have a closed season to reduce stress to breeding females so they shouldn't be messed with at all. ATM we have regs that seem to be a reaction to low river levels due to an extended drought. Some thinking suggests that at these times Cod are too easy a target so rules have been put in place to protect them. Taggers are expected to follow the letter of the law as well as the spirit of the law. All the same if a tagger was trolling for Callop and hooked a small Cod we'd not get upset if he quickly placed a tag in it without removing it from the water. For information, NO COD, have been tagged by ANSA taggers since 2008.2) Tagging provides stacks of information. Apart from the obvious movements (or lack thereof) and growth rates we can also make educated guesses at how hard a fishery is fished. If, for instance, in Gulf St. Vincent 15% of tagged snapper are recaptured but in Spencer Gulf only 5% are recaptured then it would be fair to say that GSV is fished harder than SG.If over time, Mulloway recapture rates reduced from say 10% to 3% then we could make a good case for increasing bag limits. The ANSA Saftag program is a long term program. We've been tagging fish continuously since 1998. ALL the tagging programs run by Governments in SA were short term programs aimed mainly at predicting migrations etc. The Gov't has never been in a position to assess fishery health except by monitoring commercial catch rates. We hope to eventually have enough data, spread over decades, so that we can make informed scientific arguments when fish stock patterns change.3) Nanman suggested that it might not be very useful to tag fish that are already well researched. Most of the research that has been done is now out of date because fisheries have changed and research methods have changed even more. For instance, traditional thinking has Snapper migrating up the gulfs to breed in Spring and then back out to sea (where?) in Autumn. Our tag records suggest that gulf Snapper don't move much at all. Fish outside the gulfs do, however, migrate as far east as Port Philip Bay and as far west as Esperance. A case could be made that we have 4 separate populations of Snapper - 1) East 2)GSV 3) SG 4) West. Recent DNA research is making similar assumptions. Currently it would seem that although our Snapper stocks are very closely related there seems to be only random mixing of the stocks rather than annual breeding migrations. Much like Humans that were born on this side of the gulf tend to stay and breed on this side of the gulf, while only a few move or breed elsewhere we expect that only a few Snapper move out of their comfort/feeding zone.

Get a copy of the Adam Royter DVD: Berkley Soft Plastics. It's packed full of very helpful information which will explain more than we could ever put into a post. It covers lines, knots, reels, rods, techniques, jigheads, plastics, and more. It's cheap, and it's available at most good tacklestores. I'd recommend it to anyone just starting out.

Banga , Mully Madness , Old Salty and myself headed for a Callop sesh , with Salty as the guide for the day . Into the hills we went met up and headed for our spot . Banga Caught the first Callop on a SP and with a nice fight it was landed . Old Salty was up next with another nice Callop . I cant remember the sizes unfortunately . Then we headed to the next spot were the first cast landed a nice little reddie . Mully Madness caught the biggest reddie of the day .Banga also landed a reddie .Then we headed back to the first spot so i could have a go at a callop . Old Salty had done the admirable thing in checking the yabbie pot , else were for bait while we had a crack at the reddies . Cast out and used the yabbie like a SP an jigged it every now an then . After a few cast of this my line goes of and i start fighting a nice fish . Start making headway and seen the fish ALMOST had it to the bank before it had a few sudden head shakes and it was gone . Spew spew spew . Oh well maybe next time ?

Easy to get a hook out.I have removed over a dozen both in the field and in the emergency department.Same technique as per the video but I would have removed the treble from the lure first or at the very least tape up the other treble so it doesn't catch.First pull has to be hard and fast to be effective. Here is one of the more definitive articles on the subjecthttp://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0601/p2231.html

Had none until Good Friday last year.... I fell down a cliff whilst fishing (was walking back home on a slippery path) about 10 minutes walk from my house. Ended up poised on the edge of a second drop off and everytime I moved (to try and stop the profuse bleeding from my leg) I slid a little bit further toward another long fall. Took 50 minutes for emergency crews to find me/arrive and I then required helicopter retrieval as there was absolutely no other way to get me out. had the CFS, MFS, police, abulance, Helicopter and about four news crews come.Ended up destroying my right ankle, cut my hands up and dinged my daiwa combo. Didnt walk for four months and my ankle is still gimpy a year later. Managed to snap off some pics whilst I was being rescused (I asked the emergency crews if they minded)Mr Morphine:

We went on search for the australian salmon yesterday too, had a mate from tumby bay come across to locks well for an early morning fish which turned into lunch time.3 of us fishing got only 4 salmon each with the biggest going about 2kg or 63cm on the brag matmaybe the mystery length! After reports of schools of salmon there all weekend thought we might be lucky enough to have one or two in close while we were there, but they were always way out of casting distance but there was alot of fish in the out there.Lures seemed to be the go yesterday! Loving the red and white raiders!Lines tight!
