Bait Caster

Unfortunately the pathetic response from rec fishers to the recent government attempt to ask what we wanted pretty much summed up the reason for what happens. Out of about 280K rec fishers, 800 or so turned up at the community consultations and about 1500 bothered to fill in the questionaires. Trust funds do not ensure protection of monies from abuse, many a lawyer has diddled their trust fund & I have had first hand experience of it when my mother passed. Any body know a rod builder who builds ultra light bait cast rods? Prefer someone who actually fishes them. TIA.

Rod, Steve Starling has been writing about this for years. Not really worth worrying about, there may be an advantage for some people, but watch clips of some of Australia's and Americas top anglers, lots of them switch. I think it stems more from years past when the availability of quality tackle was less here in Oz. Even now, try buying a LH wind baitcaster. Only one shop I know of stocks them, and they sell in small numbers. Not much effort needed to change an eggbeater over if that is what you want.

Yes Knackers. Most probably. The only advantage with a spin reel as far as I can tell is that you are in gear and holding the reel handle. I have never done it tho. I reckon if you used a baitcaster with a flipping switch it would work.

I never got the switch. Apparently useful in the UK fishing for carp? Maybe like a baitrunner Switch is used for what is called "backreeling". A useful technique in flowing rivers where line and lure are allowed to move back in the flow to drop into a new pocket behind a rock or eddy for example. Gives the salmon fishers more control when "hotshotting".

I doubt an average caster will notice the difference. If you are a Lefty Kreh, you probably wouldn't be on here asking these questions. Just get out and fish what you have got.

May be able to get more distance, maybe not. Depending on what you are fishing for and where, distance rarely comes into it. The ability to cast short distance, accurately is more important most of the time. Go to the Rio site or speak to Keith on Port Rd. Super helpful and has a good range of gearfor all budgets and skill levels.

Hard question to answer. Everyone will have a different favourite. Blokes I fish with, all long term fly fishers, use a variety of lines, depending on circumstances. Rio, SA, Cortland. Can't really go wrong with them. Rest assured Rio Gold is up with the best. Type "Yellowstone Angler" into google. Great info on all things fly related. Keith in the big Port Rd store is the man to speak to in Adelaide. Fair range in store and very helpful

Had a brief look at these. How heavy are they? Any chance you have a weight for the 5/6 weight?

Good luck with the build. Just make sure the rod rests are not marking the blank and weakening it. Are they padded in any way?

I have not had much luck with Molix gear. An Italian company, mass producing stuff in China for the American Bass market. Hardware is sub standard. At that price I do not think I should have to change hooks to something than works on our fish. The volume of lures that the importers order should enable them to come with upgraded hooks and rings. I guess some outlets are more interested in ripping customers off than supplying quality tackle. Usually you only have to check out the range of gear and compare the prices to genuine tackle shops. Try it some time.

Never had much luck with Suffix on any light rigs. Works fine for heavier boat/bait fishing but don't expect to set any casting records on your bream gear. The yanks use it for their bass fishing, but remember, to most of the pros over there 1/2oz is considered a light lure and a lot of the time they are pitching lures at short ranges.

I use Hot Sauce quite a lot in my baitcasting reels. It works well. As others have said, it depends on your casting ability for use in overhead reels.

Been out a few times. Some lovely Trout (up to 53cm), some nice redfin (up to 47cm) and lots of salmon trout in the south east. Not always easy in this weather, but it beats moping around at home.

Thanks for the very informative post. I have been using all 3 techniques for a number of years. The drop shot system will come into its own as the water cools and fish become more lethargic. Lots has been written about Carolina and Texas rigging but dropshotting has been a much more closely guarded secret. The cat is now out of the bag. A couple of shops have had a limited selection of gear for years. Diawa and GLoomis have been marketing the rods for this style of fishing for a long time. You do not really need the specialised drop shot rods but the increased sensitivity will boost results. J

Bought some at The Sportfishing Scene at Cavan. It was a while ago now but try a phone call.

Unfortunately the idiots ignore the rules. I was in a well known tackle shop last Thursday, the one that has just had a large expansion, and witnessed the manager of the shop selling a cheapish combo to a bloke, and offering advice on fishing for bream in the area well upstream of the bridge. When I pointed out the closed season I was told I didn't know what I was talking about and that the closed season did not start until Nov 1.

Lovely fish TP, well worth the effort.
