I normally wait until spring for the first trout fish. After reading @styla report, thought I'd give it a crack myself.
Expecting alot of water. Forecast only 11 degrees and the odd shower.

Spotted and spooked a few fish before my first. All juveniles. This guy fell to a simple grub pattern.

Another sitting in the fast wash

Glad I got out and had a look. will wait until it warms up a little and flow slows before I try again.

Nice, some inspiration, almost that time to wet a fly. Cheers

Seeing as the trout season opened last Saturday & I haven't been able to go since it opened due to being laid up in bed with lower back problems I thought
I'd find a video of one of my better spin sessions last April..
    cheers

Scrub worms were one of my favorites back in my day for fishing in Sth Aust too, used to dig them up near Gumeracha on the Gorge Road, we actually used to call them Hill worms back them, very big worms they were too 8 to 10 inches long...
Worms are great down here early season when the rivers are running high (clear or dirty) & cold, Wattle grubs can be used all throughout the season & grasshoppers/crickets from January to the first or second week of April.

Got some vibes ready for the salmon if the flys don't get out far enough. 28g. painted with colourshift. Regret the black splatters, done to break it up and look a tad more real, but should have done in sepia so not so contrasty.

    A bit lighter and smaller

These lures kinda hard to photograph in the dark arvo, this is quite chartreuse with subtle green scales

    And some gold for variety

Hey all, I'm a student and have been able to put fishing into a assignment by convincing my teacher to let me build a fishing rod, unfortunately a requirement in this task is to interview someone about the processes and things involved. was wondering if any one here makes fishing rods or could guide me to somewhere in Adelaide where I could ask someone a few questions about it all as an interview with a "pro" is a required part of the assignment, cheers👍

Easiest way to cook, is whole in my opinion - scale, gut, cut the head off - and chuck em in the pan

Only thing you need to watch, is cooking them all the way through so the meat separates from the bone - then you pick them up like a piece of corn and train your mouth to gently pull the flesh off. The bones should stay on the back bones if you are gentle

Once you get your cooking times right and your mouth tuned, you can churn through a pile of gars pretty quick

Well if you didn't cook them tonight, then definitely by tomorrow at the latest.
A simple coating of seasoned (S&P) flour is the simplest.
But can add small amount of tumeric to the seasoned flour for a yellowish look.
Medium heat, skin side down first. You'll see the flesh cooking through.
Then turn off heat and turn the fillets over and let the remaining heat in the pan cook the remaining flesh.
    Or .....
Dry fry some herbs and breadcrumbs. Lay a slither of pancetta, place gar fillet on top, then add the herb/breadcrumb mixture.
Rollup and put toothpick through to hold together.
Cook on medium, turning regularly or put in oven.

Well at least they are doing something albeit a drip in the ocean. Its all about perception but in the long run, longlining needs to be banned to stop the rape & pillage - simple as that. This is not restocking IMO. No where near enough being released if this is what they think will help!!. This should have started when the ban came in & many, many, many more thousands. We will see what happens. Is this just a once off or an ongoing project? Who will monitor this....etc. etc.
I have been sounding several pro grounds as I pass them in GSV since the ban & have generally seen plenty of fish schooled up so from my observations, the numbers seem to be good on most grounds.

Just quietly, the people flocking to stores now is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing.
All these people flooding the stores when it is clear that supermarkets will still be open during lockdown; why?
The people then crowd and cause chaos, potentially spreading it even more.
Just wear a face covering and go during the lockdown people, it's all good. Be efficient and plan things well and it'll be fine.

I'd understand shops that will be locked down such as Bottle shops even more so, but man, this is a great way to spread a virus, by cramming into tight spaces on mass.
