Soobz got a reaction from Mickyj in Reel sizes
The sizes are not interchangeable in Australia, a Daiwa 2000 can be close to Shimano 1000. You have to compare capacity and weight, and well, just hold them.
If you want a small Sienna 1000 sized reel look at the Okuma Ceymar C-10, way better than the Sienna in quality terms and possibly a tad smaller, and just as cheap. Meppstas put me on to Okuma, I'd like to try more of their gear but not easy to find locally.

Soobz reacted to Territory Lad in Just how fussy could a Whiting be?
I have fished with a guy who refuses to throw out unused bait, so more often than not he is using re-frozen (sometimes multiple times over) baits. Whether it be squid, cockles or something else and he brains them! I have been on the same boat fishing the same bait for donuts, while he regularly pulls up fish.
Quality, fresh bait is always going to be best, but experience trumps everything.

Probably attracted to the oils and gunk that we remove

Soobz reacted to Hunter69 in Coupla Juvys
I normally wait until spring for the first trout fish. After reading @styla report, thought I'd give it a crack myself.
Expecting alot of water. Forecast only 11 degrees and the odd shower.
Spotted and spooked a few fish before my first. All juveniles. This guy fell to a simple grub pattern.
Another sitting in the fast wash
Glad I got out and had a look. will wait until it warms up a little and flow slows before I try again.

Soobz reacted to dmck in Look at the magic tool this fisherman uses to tie fishing knots
I have 6 of the nail-knot tools, @ 2 for under $10.00
They have completely changed my bottom configurations. No more tangles from too long a hook-trace.
I do dropper loops in my 'bottom', cut the loop close to the 'knot' and use the tool to tie the hook direct to the line at about 50mm. THe hook sticks out at 90 degrees and doesnt tangle about the 'bottom'.

So instead of it being a nail knot it's a nozzle knot?

Soobz got a reaction from doobie in New Nasci
I thought she be a bit on the plain side, and quite retro looking, not that looks matter too much. But, that does not appear to be the new model based on this
https://fish.shimano.com/ja-JP/product/reel/hanyouspinning/a075f000035yx1uqaa.html
It's a quite different reel all around, less capacity, higher gearing, more weight, another bearing, but specs mean nothing really.
For historical reference :
Wonder if there's any serious discounting of the FB.

Soobz reacted to Meppstas in Finally, some aggressive trout.
Seeing as the trout season opened last Saturday & I haven't been able to go since it opened due to being laid up in bed with lower back problems I thought
I'd find a video of one of my better spin sessions last April..
cheers

Soobz got a reaction from Softy in Soobz Ludicrous Lures
Bored in lockdown, so some brag posts showing me lurid lures (tm) landed fish.
This is a nice vibe, I don't know if or what it's a ripoff of, but casts very well and vibrates really nice. Shit in weed though as the nose rakes it up. The pished pilly colour was lost to rocks.
A bit less vibration on this guy, more suited to deeper water than the surf I think where you can teabag a bit and really work it.
Was really interesting that the fly rod laded bigger fish easier because the entire length of the rod is taking load compared to the top half of the spin rod, which was a 6-12kg medium heavy action.
Green lure is 88mm, blue is 72mm if you're trying to work out the salmon size. I didn't measure a single fish with was a tad stupid

Might not like metal as it might react with the acids or alkalis on their bodies. I know snails have that problem.

Looking at these again the green one brings back memories of me landing bream and STs on flies roughly that colour . Could be a killer on the fish .

Spent the weekend at Edithburgh. Apparently the plastered pilchard (pseudo bent minnow) works ludicrously well:
Yep even a squid took the lure. Total for the was 10 snook, best 56cm, 10 salmon best 40cm, and 1 squid (more on the trad lures). Taking orders lol!

Got some vibes ready for the salmon if the flys don't get out far enough. 28g. painted with colourshift. Regret the black splatters, done to break it up and look a tad more real, but should have done in sepia so not so contrasty.
A bit lighter and smaller
These lures kinda hard to photograph in the dark arvo, this is quite chartreuse with subtle green scales
And some gold for variety
