piratepom reacted to Jack. in Snapper or Mulloway
What's your poison? Snapper or Mulloway... & why??For fight, fun and personal satisfaction, my reasonably new obsession (year or so) has been the elusive mulloway. These things are just so accessible! The mulloway are basically just under our noses and are there in huge numbers from what I understand Where as regular snapper catches require a boat capable of riding a bit of chop, Mulloway are a landbased, kayak and beaten up tinny species! Great! Some people may say Snapper fight harder/better, and I used to say this too. But thinking about it, they fight just a bit differently. Mulloway are ambush feeders and I guess that, as such, they are geared for short bursts of power and rage. So you hook one and the bugga will bolt... Even a littleun will run a bit of line at first. Then they either play possum or just chill for a bit and off they go again, usually I find with q bit of thought about direction the second time, like at structure, or pulling at a sharp angle running accross you. :)This is pretty cool, but the snapper will just KEEP on fighting to the net. I really think there's not too much of a difference in quality of fight when alls done infact, I would take a 20lb mulloway fight up a little mangrove creek over lifting a 20lb snapper from 20 meters down any day I've been a bit of a snapper tragic for most of my fishing life... But an eventful couple of sessions recently had me scratching my head. I had the great fortune of capturing a mulloway one week and a snapper a couple weeks later in more of less the same place on the same gear.I was fishing in some tight water among the mangroves. With the tide full on both occasions, it would have been all of 3m of water. Both times I chucked out a stinky old pilchard on two 6/0 hooks. 40lb trace, 30lb braid, 6-10kg rod, same reel. By myself both times. When.I.hooked the mulloway, I called it for a mulloway, had a heart pounding but enjoyable few minutes and happily boated it 20lb Now when I hooked the snapper, it's not surprising that I called it for a mully. The fight was very similar really, but just a little more spirited. When I had it half way in, I started to think it may be a snapper, cos of the extra knocking and the lack of any reel break between runs. But because it was mulloway territory, I was getting a bit excited thinking that maybe it was a bigger mully than I am used to! 10meters from the boat the fish still had heaps of gas and it took a little while before it was beaten and I had him boatside... Alot different from yer average mulloway battle. In the end, I was a little disappointed that it was a snapper15lb) and not a mully. I was obviously happy and stoked to get a nice fish, and it was a bit different, but yeah, I think Mulloway are something a bit special to me now :)And of course a massive draw card for me is the.potential to go XOS on a mulloway and capture something EPIC.... Until then happy fishin'

well fellas where do i start its been a while but i got invited on a trip too salties with the boys from Anglers choice some people my like that or not but its not the point just the way it all started .So anyway got this invite too hit salties fro 3 days leaving 3am friday morning the 15th and like my arm had too be twisted i was in without hesitation.so the time gre closer after a couple of weeks of waiting watching the weather and so fourth and then it didnt look good as we all know last weekend wasnt suppose too be the time for heading too salt creek with the wethear fronts we had coming in.so anyway made the dreaded call on thursday night too make sure it was all still on and yep we had prepared for the worst as you do down there and we truly epxected it .so we headed down early friday morning all still expecting too get blown off the water and into the esky .well on the way past meningie and headed too slaties the sun was popping up and it seemed rather calm from what we thought it would be .anyway headed onto salties and cmae on at 42 a few hours before high tide not alot of beach left already so we pushed up and onto the back track and made our way back onto the beach and up past tea tree we spent the next 4 or so hours just checking for the gutter we wanted and found it around 18k past tea tree. so as ya do when its a bit chilly we whackedo nthe waders and setup up camp ready too fish .Within the first half hour or one the boys landed an undersize mully ,good sign of things too come we hoped .As for the weather ive only done 3 trips too salties and this was the best ive seen there at one stage a couple of the fellas were in shorts and t shirts .so anyway we fished on and got a few more small mullies had a feed then the first legal mully for the weekend rolled out of the gutter courtesy of 1 of the fellas and he had his first ever legal mully.after that we fished on into the early hours of the morning as you do down there. i decided too get a few hours shut eye and was up by 745 with all of 3 hours sleep both nights before .so after i got up and ha d a biati nthe water one ofthe other boys was up and promptly done the same .fished on for a while i got myself a 2.5kg salmon which i was happy with as both trips before i hadnt caught anything .not long after my mate who just got up half hour before landed his first legal saltie mully and went running into camp yelling out fish on .well all the rest of the boys were up and fishing not long after too say the least. maybe half an hour or after waking up the same fella who landed his first ever mully the night before then proceeded too beat his other mully the next morning.By this stage we had already landed atleast 10 to 12 vundersize mullies along with 3 keepers.so anyway i was up early and decided too fish closer too camp and my mates brother moved up into where i was the night before. Well silly me i guess but not long after he landed a nice size gummie. meanwhile i was seeing undersize and legal mullies being pulled all around me .so i decided the time had come and turned my first salt creek salmon into nice slab baits and half hour or so later had my first salt creek gummie .by this stage a few of the boys decided too take a run a bit further up and collect some more of the drift wood that was all over the track for our fire instead of gettin a flat trye running over it later. they made it around 200 metres up the beach when my mates brother was into a mully ,off down the beach i ran with the gaff he popped it out of the gutter and i hit it first shot right in the sweet spot another legal mully in the bag. frustrated as i was by this stage we took his fish too camp i said ill just go put a fresh slab out and come back for your photos so i did that got a few pics for him and the next thing i knew my rod was buckled and it was my turn not long after i had my first salties mully of 84 cm sitting in my hands .so we fished on through the night with a total of 8 legal mullies landed since the friday all legal size and all wihtin our limits. so anyway we woke early for the last day of fishing took some pics of us and the fish and started packing up camp always while fishing.so anyway before we had camp packed up and ready too go home one of the obys who hadnt got a legal mully that weekend snuck 1 in right on the bell and i also got another gummie, lost 1 and my mate accidentally hit my leader trying too gaff the biggest gummie of the trip but thats fishing and thats my latest brag and prob wont be one for a while accept for my 2.5kg i landed last month on a 2-4kg rod and 10lb braid next to noarlunga jetty all in all though its one trip im sure ill never forget .MM

I love this type of thread, when Mulloway gurus like Jack & snapperhead (+ others) give little insights into some of their successful fishing techniques. I read it, take it in, and if I get the chance I will test out some of the theories. :f The video show a slightly different technique, one that would seem slightly more logical than a Mulloway taking Soft Plastics off the bottom, but from my limited Bream and SP experiences that’s exactly what the Bream do! IMHO it’s what fishing is all about, learning and trying different techniques and then personally nailing a particular fish with a specific technique, but until then it’s just theories, myths and rumours. Cheers for the video TT97 and nice fish NickMav.

I think it basically comes down to three main things.1. Direct Contact with Lure and Bottom at all times.2. Paddle Tail plastics or anything with an inbuilt action!3. Slow it down with rolls and hops instead of burns and flicks! If you know what I mean :cheer: If I had to choose I am flicking with these:1. 70mm Squidgy fish Silver Fox and Black Gold.2. Squidgy Mongrel Boof Mullet.3. 110mm Squidgy Shad in White Lightning. And for any more information Here is a video you might want to watch:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGtrUmmZHYgCheers as always TT. A lot of theories being thrown around but it really comes down to the location and the conditions. Its these that dictate what you use. I personally am fishing in small shallow creeks so I go for the lightest jighead I can get which is 1/8 7/0 TT's. However if the tide is running quick which it can do I go up to 1/2 oz. You fish to suit the conditions. Also the style of tail you use makes a difference, paddletails require more weight to get the action working in them. Stick or jerk baits have no action it needs to be imparted by the angler so thats why you can get away with less weight.Really it all comes down to knowing whats going on below the surface and whats needed to get the fish to eat your lure. When it comes to colour I find that I change my mind regularly and the shade I was using a few years ago I now dont even have in my bag. Last years favourite is gone and I have a new colour I go to first so really Im beginning to think its more in the fishos mind than the fish. One last thing I think is the most important thing to get right is correct rigging. You really do need to get them on straight. Even the slightest little kink in the plastic makes a difference so dont cast till you are happy with how it sits on the jighead. If in doubt have a test swim and make sure its swimmimg right.Did I hear someone mention dead sticking......... Now for hard bodies One word suspend cheerssnapps

Make no mistake, school mulloway aren't afraid to scavenge! Over summer, we caught the majority of our school mulloway on dead baits, not all, but most. Next we experimented with light bream gear when they were REALLY on, like days where we were hooking 6 fish in a two our sesh. Since they were taking dead baits, no need for a big rod to handle a livie. My mate stu was first to have success light, and a 70-80cm mullie is frightening on 6lb with 2-4kg bream stick :)Well at least for two thunder runs then.the heart slows a bit.Anyway, we started to.try a few soft plastics toward the end of the season and Ugly4life told me about.the slick rigs. I bought some of these and threw them about. In the shallow creeks they worked best (where we would usually use floats). Stu musta got about half dozen and I fouled a couple. But here is the kicker..... Most hits occurred on the lift or just prior, meaning they were basically picking em of the bottom like a dead bait. Now, I recently was chatting with a site member who is an absolute mully gun and uses only SPs.... He actually reported loads of fish just come and monster a plastic off the bottom!!!! Blew me away.really, cos I was thinking we were doin something wrong and just lucky, kind of cheating with our few softplastic mullie captures ;)Anyhow, that's my limited experience, but I can assure you that mulloway eat squidgy slick rigs (cheers ugly4), and it's probably best to work your plastic with long pauses like Breaming.I now have a rod and reel.deliberately set up devoted to this method of fishing and am looking forward to finding another purple patch on the.schoolies (likely next November where I fish) so I can test it out.Im still out there live baiting don't worry, but a photo of a 1m plus mully with a slikrig hanging out its gob would be brilliant and go straight to the pool room (lol if I had one) cheers & good luck buddy, good to have ya back

i had a short session on saturday, and thought id try my newly aquired, old model 5wt,managed to get my quite a few salmon trout up to 37cm and a mullet on fly, only the 1 mullet as they were quite hard to hook due to the subtle takes, what made it also special was they were on flies i had tied the night before.

lol these threads are the best. I like my trusty Daiwa Double Clutch Phantom for hard bodies. Salmon go spaz for this lure and it's also great on Snook.Plastics I don't think there's much that beats the 3" Powerbait minnows, especially in the pearl watermelon colour on a clear day.Lately I have also been having success with the Atomic Ripperz 4" Minnow.

Went to the local today that i had been givin the heads up , from this site that huge carp in it . Now i really enjoy catching fish , the bigger the better an i'm not really fussed on what species as long as its big . Didn't have much luck chasing Mully's with Jack so mix it up an try fresh water . Was up nice an early and got there before seven . Had a few nibbles before my line started going tight and at first i thought it was a bird catching my line but soon realised that it was going tight in a different direction . My line had a lot of weight to it but it wasn't pulling any drag just tracking slowly right . Then as it got further to the right it started pulling drag . It was a very interesting fight with the fish pulling drag a few times and the line getting caught in some weed under the surface witch would pop every now and then . Twenty minutes went by with me going back and forth along the bank trying to get the fish close enough to net before the fish finally was finally in . A passer by was nice enough to take this pcture of a very happy me . I started this in Fishing footage with the video being uploaded and i will post very soon .
