Just a quick write up on what Rocknev (aka Nev) can do when he works with metal...during the snapper comp the bracket that my chair sits on was broken when i hit a wave a bit quick, the person sitting in it went flying down to the back of the boat. broke 3 of the four arms on the bracket.went to the boat shop to see about getting a new one, the boat is a mid 80's Haines Hunter so i wasnt expecting much and i was right, they didnt even have the same sized hole for the pole that i needed. wondering what i could do i rang my mate Nev who is a boilermaker and asked what he could do. he said bring it round, i'll have a squiz. did that last night and he said it was a shitty alloy that would be difficult to fix. leave it with me he said.got a call today saying he had made a new one and to come round and pick it up. i did so and was stoked with the result, exactly the same but made from 6mm stainless steel. this one wont be breaking in a hurry!Cheers Nev, ur a legend!!!

Might do wonders for the tourist $$$$, but the sooner such a comp is canned the better it will be for the Snapper stocks.

Still might see a couple of horses caught, i wouldn't be surprised if the winning fish was up around the 14 - 15 kilo mark, but no where near as many fish over the 12 kilo mark, as in the glory days of the pens. The bigger ones are much harder to scope out, and as i said before its the locals with some homework up their sleeves that will do well. This has turned a lot of victorians away.

im hearing wilson now make the new snyderglas rods.. im just hoping they are up to the quality of the old babies.. ive got a two piece snyder and that will bend just like the one piece without showing signs of letting go.. gotta love being hooked up so solid you can play smoke on the water on the line if you pluck it

if you decide to go with the alvey reel, i would be hooking it up with a snyderglas set up for an alvey..has a short butt, so the reel can sit low.. ive seen the alvey rod, but im not really a fan of it to be honest.. the rod should have a large oversized eye as the first eye, and pretty much in the middle of the rod... an alvey rod bucket strapped around waist is a great idea.. they help a lot with winding in, keeping the reel in a great comfy position.. another plus with the alvey is the star drag, not a fan of the lever drag or the B series alveys.. 650c, 700c, alvey..with the star drag is second nature now to tighten or loosen drag with a finger..just falls into line maturally after a while.. saves farting about with a front or rear drag on a spinner.. but again, im biased to the alveys and snydersthis is my 153 7 wrap one piece snyderglas.this is my C'MERE rod... .. hooked onto a rather large eagle ray.. i will break before that rod does.. im 5ft8, stocky ( read chunky ) and 100kg.. im laying into that rod as best i can... the rod loves it... not bad for a 30yr old rod

I'm a real fan of the baitrunners for surf fishing. I manage to drop them in the sand and surf regularly too. So much better for setting setting hooks. I have had more problems with overhead level wind reels in the sand that I have had with my 3 baitrunner Ds, and you wouldn't call ABU 7000 - 10000 series bad surf reels

Alveys are not for me BUT I do think they are a great beach reel, tougher than anything else, simple to service and maintain, and easy to cast. They do have a lot going for them with their simplicity and ease of use.Regards,SB

Well just picked up my brand new alvey rod ,good looking unit and it will suit my 700c surf champion well ,probably going to need some practice to cast this beast correctly but shouldnt take long to master ,have read most of the posts on here watched a video on some guy trying to bury his spinning real, because he was so ashamed of it but got caught by the camera crew ,and been told these alveys cant cast very well . and to finish of all the posters who said how good they are have been called old women ."WHAT" anyone would think that alveys dont have a reputation for there magnificent casting ability, there robustness and there longjevity of service ,all types of reels have there place as rocnev said and i agree i use spinners in my boat and an abu 7000 but i dont call the people who talk about them a bunch of old women just because they like a certain type of reel ,have a look back at the original post i put up ,i asked if anyone still used them ,what they thought of them ,now there have been some good comments and points about how to use them by the fellas on here that do use them "in certain areas of fishing" mate cmon no need for that!

Those reels are priced over 500 dollars if not way more.Dont get lubed from what ive read but yeah could buy 5 Alveys for the price lol.Oh dont wanna be part of the argument' date=' just an observation.Off a for sale thread on here regarding a Vaan stahl.............The reel runs ok still very tight,no play in any moving parts.i tried to open it and things went wrong so i had to seal it up with loctite after the service.Should not need a service for 4-5 years unless going under water with it,but opening it will require some tools.I have used it like that and showed no problems in it’s operation. That’s why it has a major drop in price

alvey make a 2 speed alvey.... never seen one, but theres a video on youtibe of it in action ... remember the time one of jimmies mates turned up with a brand name big spinner del? all bright and shiny in gold and black.. wont mention the brand name... first cast, retrieve, snagged... couldnt shift it, so walk backwards as normal holding the spool to break the line without bending the rod.. almighty expensive sounding noise... and end of 500 doller spin reel.. we pulled apart for a look and ball bearings falling out from everywhere... this was a brand new virgin reel... used for all of one cast... now consider that to an alvey, mine are yrs old... (20+ yrs some of them)have been dropped, smashed, fell on, fell out of car, submerged in salt water, covered in dust from long drives to spots sitting in rod racks on bonnet of car, and gone yrs without so much as a rinse off, let alone an oil or grease... ( bro lost his at sheringa for over half an hr to the crashing surf.. when found, rinsed off in ocean and carried on fishin)i might be biasedm but will ANY other reel be able to work completly as it should after being subject to any of the things alveys go through? VERY much doubt it... your saying because you dont see them they are not popular? i cant remember the last time i seen a real gt falcon, or a real gts bathurst monaro,a real GTR XU1 torana? yeah its been a while... just because you dont see them doesnt mean they are not about... go to qld and see just how many alveys are used.. PLENTY of them ... maybe one day matey i might get to have a fish with you..maybe show just how good an alvey can be... if you fall asleep on the rocks dont worry... if the alvey goes off it will wake you up..

Ausea i got a good laugh from your posts.. i know many a man who fishes day in day out with a alvey bait fishing all day long.. my step father was my influence in fishing. hence my love of alveys to this day. he still uses a 450/500 series alvey for all forms of table fishing from whiting on running rigs to garfish on pencil floats and even fishing completely unweighted he can cast further than many people using floats.as for lure casting, yes they arnt geared up like a modern day spin reel to make it easier. but i have still been lure fishing for salmon for hours with those around me casting miles further than everyone else and cranking them alveys in at a steady pace all day long.. catching just as many fish as everyone else. i know when it comes to beach/rocks i wont turn to anything else by choice. though i do own a few big spinners.. and.. ive broken many many many big spinners.. including while in sessions on the rocks with nev.. ill stick to my alveys i think

Fantastic Photos as always Nev.You should have been on the rocks tonight mate, I thought you'd be there with all the wind.Ended up landing my biggest snapper off the stones tonight. Went 80cm and 5kg.I tried my normal spot for a couple of hours for nothing. Wind was annoying, right in ya face. I was going to call it quits, but decided to try a new spot. Glad i did. First just a panny, at 40cm, then dropped a decent snapper. Almost out of bait, so i chucked on a piece of squid and started to pack up. Drag started to scream, after a few tense moments and some great runs, i finally landed it.So stoked to get my biggest stones caught snapper.YAY!!!!Might see you next week Nev.A couple of guys near me landed 3 pannies.Cheers.Sam
