While early morning fishing/squidding off the rocks at Memory Cove with my son about 10 years ago we noticed a strange shape buzzing around in the water near our feet, pops its head up and its a Little penguin. Cool to see, but it gets more weird..... It susses us out for a few minutes then scrambles out onto the rocks and stands with us! In fact it stood right between us. "What is it doing Dad?"  Well as I don't do penguin I guessed at it either being ill or it was mightily lost and confused and thought we were big penguins! My 10 year old daughter joined us on the rocks and was so excited to see this beautiful little creature and as all kids like to do she wants to pat it. I said there is no way it will let you and as all kids like to do she proved me wrong! Obviously we didn't want to overly interfere with this creature, and once she had touched it and proved me wrong we left it to own devices and we fished on. It would occasionally have a swim and then get back out and hang with us again. Weird as! We finished up and as soon we left the penguin jumped in and I thought that was that.... Glanced back once, and then twice, and on the second occasion watched in amazement as a sea eagle swooped down from behind where we were standing and plucked our little friend from the water and carried it off to the other side of the cove. Without a word I walked on hoping to god that my daughter wouldn't look back, but of course she did, and then we got "wow Dad look at that big bird"... "oh what's it got, it's carrying something".... "on nooo the penguin Dad, it's got the penguin"!!! That's when you do your best explanation of that's how nature works, blah, blah, blah, but obviously that doesn't help a small person who has just lost her new favourite animal in the world, ever!!!
That year we were unlucky enough to come across many dead emus on the drive in to Memory Cove, a dead seal on the beach and the loss of our little friend. We renamed it Memorial Cove that year!

Well, i havnt really posted these holidays but by no means have i not been out fishing!!! Where do i start? well as many of you know i fish the onky a fair bit and have been hitting it pretty hard the first few weeks of holidays which resulted in some decent bream and mulloway. I also had the opportunity to head down to portland in victorias south east which has some awesome fishing and got myself a new pb squid with a hood just over 40cm and also a pb snapper around 50cm.

Then from there i jetted off to sydney and had the opportunity to do some estury fishing up the central coast and omg is it amazing! When i say flathead galore i mean it! plenty of flathead ans well as my first tarwhine and a few yellowfin bream. Had a crack on the sand whiting with poppers and had a few hits but not one hookup!

Now this is the real exciting part, what an entrance to 2015 with 2 wicked new pbs! I decided to fish the mouth of the onky as i heard its been doing well for mulloway lately believe it or not but guess what decids to smash my 25cm live mullet! a 47cm bream!!!!! absolutely over the moon, been stuck on 42cm for the most part of 2 years and to top it off with that was amazing! But it gets even better! Ive been hitting goolwa beach a bit lately with my mate for a few gummies and little schoolies but last week i finally got a legal mulloway of 79cm! wicked fight in the surf and i reckon im addicted now absolutely love it just gets your heart racing!

So I was lucky enough to get  a few crabs last time I went out.

Now although the crab limit has come down to 20, the number of family members in my household has halved too, to two, so that works out quite nicely. Blueys are the wifes favourite, which means I get forced to go fishing!!!. We usually have a feed with crusty bread and beers on the first night and then Singapore chilli crabs for the next night and if there's and left over after that I pick and pickle them.

This time we tried a few other recipes and had crab four ways over four nights.

The standard, and my absolute favourite.

    Singapore Chilli crab looking good.

Goan Crab curry. Not the best pic' but this was fantastic.

Heres a pic of one of my FG knots with half hitches after a year & half of fishin for snapper

30lb braid to 70 leader, the 70 lb leader is used for fishin around razorfish beds.

Smoked some tuna today. Here's my simple recipe. Tastes good with a cold beer.

    1/2 cup of salt
    1/2 cup of brown sugar
    2 teaspoons of dried oregano
    Squirt of soy sauce
    Dash or Chilli powder
    2 litres of water approx
Tuna as much or as little as you want. Adjust ingredients accordingly.

    METHOD:
Place sugar, salt, oregano, soy and Chilli into a container and dissolve with hot water. Once dissolved add enough cool water to cover tuna. Add tuna to brine solution and refrigerate for 5 hours. Once 5 hours is up smoke it.

Chief reacted to Rod in FG leader knot variation
    G'day
I recently set about tying leaders on with this knot after watching the various videos but when it came down to it I thought of an easier way (for me anyway).  On my tackle table I have a small vice and wrapped and clamped the braid from the rod in the vice, tightened the line with the reel to put a bend in the rod and then used the method where you wrap the mono around the braid, pulling on it as you go forms the knot and keeps it all really tight.  Very quick as well and very easy on the fingers
    Cheers

I found this way was easy for me...

and I agree Moggy half hitches taper the knot at the end that goes through the guides when casting
    all tag ends are covered
I finish off the last hitch with 5 or 6 loop throughs so the tag end is trimmed off up the knot and held by the wraps if that makes sense.
But good on ya sbarnden for trying different ways

    Learning Learning always learning

    Cheers
