  1. I'll be having a crack at some gar from the kayak, Also really want to get something big from the kayak, snapper, king, hell i'll take a port Jackson ! Also want to start exploring the fabled northern flats....starting this weekend hopefully, not the best conditions though, does anyone know if a 0.95m low tide is low enough to get out to the good spots or is it better to wait for a lower tide?
  2. I don't have an answer but ill give an opinion on what I don't like lol I spent more than usual to get the berkley vanish 6lb and I really don't rate it at all. It is pretty thick and very stiff, when pulling knots tight it always catches and doesn't slide nicely even with plenty of spit. It also in my opinion wears very quickly. After fishing for carp in a relatively snag free area I checked it and could snap it easily by hand in several spots along the leader. The only thing it would have rubbed against would be sticks on the bottom of the pond. I used to just use a cheaper rovex bran
  3. Try a red and black matuka (google gives some good examples), I haven't been fly fishing for ages but this would be my first choice. It is a fish pattern that is a bit longer than a nymph.. Other things to consider would be how deep the fly is getting.. soft plastics work great for reddies as they bounce along the bottom. might need to get down deeper but im not sure what type or depth of water you are fishing. They love things that flash so try something with a metallic finish? As for size I think anything that is around 2.5-5cm long to would be fine as the 50mm soft plastics like wrigglers
  4. Ive got some 38-40's out of the lake, only on bait though, cant get anything good on lures or plastics lol. Lots of fun
  5. there will be the initial outlay costs for sure, if you are purely after a feed and saving money then unless you've got a honey hole that produces fish everytime you wont necessarily save money on your fishing trips, however you will get far more enjoyment trying to catch a feed than going to a shop . Kmart have some pretty decent 7 ft graphite fishing rods for 30 bucks, get a shimano IX 2500 reel from anaconda 25 bucks (these things are low range reels but will last you ages and are the same reels used on the tackle rat combos that Paul Worstling has used to land swordfish, I had one for 15
  6. finally got out yesterday in the yak at outer harbour, not a sniff was a nice morning though
  7. Solid effort and a few fish to come home with, nice work
  8. Nope no fishing, when things align better I hope to chase some trouties in the port....or some bigger models
  9. hey mate, You should have a read through the current status of sa fishery reports from the Govt http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/236904/SA-Marine-Scalefish-Fishery-Status-Report.pdf in these you will find examples of fisheries that have been or still are overfished. (ie mud cockles in the port river, garfish stocks and some stocks of KGW and snapper). You need to know that the fish stock of species are split into regions, ie upper spencer gulf, lower spencer gulf, gulf st Vincent, SE etc. so a species may be classed as overfished (or the nicer term they use "transitional
  10. With a super light jighead (1/24th-1/32th of an ounce), rigged horizontally so it moves sideways like a crab Cool, that's exactly what I did, but I haven't had any takers yet!
  11. Sounds epic well done! Out of interest I just picked up some crab plastics. what way do you find best to rig them?
  12. I don't think mesh size matter. Only mentions hoop size and net depth. It doesn't mention anything about the material the mesh is made from http://pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0006/92337/Crab_Fishing_in_South_Australia_Recreational_Fishing_Guide_2015.PDF
  13. Wasn't fishing, but in the boat in the north arm port river when i was doing some research for my PhD. Just motoring along at a fairly slow place when i hear this weird sound, 'cheee ewe' kinda laser sound, or a bit like when you flick the wire on a long tight fence and it makes that kinda laser gun star wars sound (very hard to describe) Any way i turned around to see a splash about a meter behind the boat that looked like it originated under the water but it was a very vertical stream of water about 4ft high and maybe 20-30cm diameter. My first thought was sh!t ive popped a dolphin!!!! ha h
  14. Not sure on the make of skirt lure ASD but the ones i used were just like a marlin skirt lure but only about 6-8cm. We used white and it was great fun watching the skirt skipping in the wake of the boat then getting smashed by a salmon.
  15. Charter operators off cape jervis use little surface skirt lures and they work amazing. Otherwise metal slugs or harbodies all work
  16. i used to always just use size ten long shanks and had good success but as mentioned size 4 or 6 circles are brilliant and i pretty much only use those now. anything will work really but with carp you tend to let them have a run so just clicking the bailarm over and letting the circle do its thing is pretty deadly, you dont miss many unless your bread ball is covering your hook point and you just pull the whole thing out of its mouth, Bread, corn or worms pretty much all ive ever used
  17. awesome trouties mate, good job As for the carp well that is a monster ungly fish
  18. looks like they are fishing off a jetty to me, quite possible that swimmer was in contact with the fishing line
  19. ....target big sharks near swimming beaches. In case you havent seen what happened recently in the states. I cant believe the carefree attitude of the fisherman in this footage
  20. Sausage works a treat for bream, Brother used twisties (the chips not the halcos ) and got some follows from redfin but no takers
  21. mrfish

    Any good

What do ya'll reckon of these type of productshttp://www.deals360.com.au/leisure-accessories/portable-fish-finder?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=fish-finder&utm_campaign=leisure-accessorieseffective or not?
  22. Nice post TT, i agreeLee Rayner is the best presenter and the one youre most likely to learn something from. Does anyone know why he left Ifish. I remember he and paul hosting the first season ever of ifish, and i remember seeing them both with rex hunt in his last season. Adventure bound is a great show though.ET is pretty boring as a fishing show for me. i cant stand his voiceovers and he doesnt target a wide enough variety of fish. couple of other shows with fishing on the tv are catch and cook and river to reef. they are low production though. The fly fishing one 'on the fly' is really goo
  23. Thanks for the replies, gives me something to think about. I usually like to fish light so am leaning towards a 300 with 15lb but i need to see them in reel life so its iff to the shop for me
  24. Hey all, got about 150$ to get a new reel for my general purpose boat rod. Just wondering if any one has any opinion on what would be a good reel to get. It'll be for targeting mullies and snaps. What size reel and what pound braid are people using these days. 15 lb braid be enough or would you recommend 20 lb?Opinions and advice welcomed
  25. its a yes....but only if you cut it down to have three hooks, it'll still be effective
