kon got a reaction from Ale in Holiday period snapper
Interesting comments there Ale.Spent two weeks north coast KI in Dec, some people were catching them but very sporadic apparently. We had very little action at our "reliable" marks, unusually slim pickings I must say!And I estimate three quarters of those actually hooked were undersize, other folks made the same comment too.I swear most of the time it was almost as if either the fish finder was lying or they just did not want to play...

Location/size/quantity, all irrelevant...they`ll just keep doing it until they`re busted, when and if.Whereupon plead ignorance (whether genuine or not), possibly let off with a caution, have a few recfishing guides handed out to them - which even odds will get piffed out the car window on the way home.Without a Singapore-style law enforcement approach (or at the very least a five/ten-fold increase in fisheries officer numbers) this sort of stuff will just keep on happening unfortunately. But there is every likelyhood that the big fisheries boat with attendant rubber ducky will be prowling the north coast of KI on the morning of 30th November to make sure that a couple of dozen boats (at most) in that part of the world don`t have a snapper on board before, lord forbid, the stroke of midday (YES, they raced into the Stokes Bay environs a couple of years ago on "the day" at 1130!)...never mind the nightly metro jetty slaughter courtesy of the WGAF, "no spik ingrish" and "not my bucket, mate" undersize/overbag brigade.Oh my, the priorities... :vomit:

kon got a reaction from Tacklebags in Disgusting !!!!!!!!!!!
Nanman Unfortunately it is about "seen to be doing" politics - BTW recs do have an impact by definition, but as you say not to anywhere as significant an extent as the level of commercial extraction over recent years.I actually think that what has been implemented for this year is worthy of consideration as a permanent fix, ie a ban on commercial extraction until 15 Dec and reduced bags for recs for the first two weeks of Dec. People can still fish, regional communities not adversely affected economically, conservation imperatives are addressed, a win-win compromise...too bad it doesn`t look like being the endstate outcome, for both political and easy-fix simplicity reasons...And then there is the looming Nov-through-Jan Gulfs Spatial Closures decision-making shitfight early next year - forget about 15 Dec opening day for all, that additional conservation measure will be a major spanner in the works for fishers and regional communities if they make those closure areas contiguous with land rather than well and truly mid-gulf! -

kon got a reaction from pauly s in shark gear
paulyPossibly a bit of bias at this end, but I reckon my Tyrnos 30 would catch most things...Mono? Used to like Platypus Platinum until I discovered the Kokoda GTR Ultra - greater rated dia for a given poundage I think, but just seems to be better with both knot tying and memory considerations, once again I could be subjective there.I like your mention of the poundage. FWIW I am primarily a boat fisher, both the Tyrnos and the Penn 330 wear 50lb GTR - my simplistic theory is if that line fails I probably wouldn`t have wanted to bring that particular beastie in anyway!

People...with respect, I fail to pick up on the semantics which have generated this rather esoteric discussion!"The man was interviewed and admitted taking 20 abalone – he also did not hold a valid recreational fishing licence."Shows a complete disregard of the law by the individual and restates to everyone that a recfishing licence is required. Thus it made the offences even worse for that reason alone. Don`t see a problem there.Mr Millar said as well as the jail sentence the man was fined $1000 for not having his recreational fishing licence and taking invertebrates from the inter-tidal zone.Restates a recfishing licence requirement again and refers to more lawbreaking by the individual. Once again, no issue there."Fisheries Officers will continue to respond to major breaches of fisheries regulations that threaten the sustainability of Victoria's fisheries.A proforma warning to all, nothing snide or subliminal..."This is a strong reminder to all recreational anglers that breaches can result in serious outcomes," he said.In other words - do the right thing, in all respects, we are highlighting this case because of its severity, etc.I honestly cannot see the problem here folks...time for I think...

The Adelaide & Mt Lofty Natural Resources Management Board has published a DRAFT Three Year Investment Plan for public comments by 21 December 2016. This document is very significant for recreational fishing. This Plan is critical to developments in recreational fishing, both freshwater and marine, and those fish that move between the two. It covers habitat and many other features.pdf is attached

Yeah, geez Kon, bloody obvious. You catch a shark and have your photo taken you get fined, if you don't catch one, not for lack of trying you get cautioned. Pretty fair and consistent to me  I got cautioned for having a tail light out last night, why didn't that make the paper?

Just got off the phone with Troy (if you're reading this thanks for the call). It will be/was alleged that the person was fishing with wire trace when and where he should not have been to put simply (he has 30 days to appeal). As per the AN article in realtion to the other chaps the investigation is ongoing as it will be alleged some of his mates were using non prescribed gear ie wire trace at a time and place currently prohibited under section 79 of the fisheries management act 2007. Cheers,Greg.

@Kon, I made a call to PIRSA regarding the nature of the alleged offence about an hour ago. Spoke to an officer that was not familliar with the case so i've left my # for Troy Harris (fisheries officer and regular PIRSA contributor on S&H) to call back.

If, repeat if, this from page 5 of the thread is correct
then assuming it was mono trace and the hooks were no longer than 50mm or had a gape no greater than 18mm, etc etc I hope he takes it to court because there was no offence committed.Otherwise - rules is rules, if you want to pull that sort of stunt just to make a point then 110% squeaky-clean is the way to go. I would urge all to bear in mind though, that there is a review of the rules imminent.Just sayin`... The others potentially being charged - probably a technicality matter of "assisting in the taking" or something along those lines?Maybe PIRSA could clarify on this thread what illegal tackle was actually used, to put all this innuendo and second-guessing to rest? -
kon got a reaction from afishyfish in SA boaters not happy!
Groan... :whistle:Transport Minister Pat Conlon blamed the rise in unspent levy on a fall in applications for funding by local councils, which under a protocol are asked to meet 50 per cent of funding for a project. How very convenient to have such a protocol with councils being short of money and all. -

negrukyThis is a grey area at the moment and, by inference, subject to enforcement discretion depending on whether they think you are full of BS or not.And it is exactly why Item #2 of Restriction Hours is in the MFA draft paper that RJ posted tonight on the Metro Sharking Restrictions thread; It is strongly advised that a definitive statement is included in any review of the current restrictions to the effect that fishers who are still in the process of angling a hooked shark at the 5:00am deadline will not be liable for an offence under the Fisheries Act if all other aspects of the capture are legal.Cutting 300 metres of line would probably not be the best environmental move, which only leaves one option.Jacintha and Mortimer walking their keeshonds along Grange beach at 6.30am on a Wednesday morning enroute to their local breakfast cafe will just have to cope with the affronting spectacle of someone...dear lord, oh my goodness... fishing... -

I know that in metallurgy the determination as to whether a material is or isn't homogenous can be blurry to say the least at times. While many alloys are utilised because they are stronger or more suitable for in service use than homogenous structures there are also heat treatment processes etc that can make homogenous structures tough like their alloy competitors. As for utilising this defintion in a court of law for your benefit however, you may still want to have a few rec fishers on your sharking offence jury panel! This is where the politically driven decisions of PIRSA`s masters will come back to haunt them.A brilliant manifestation of political knee-jerk stupid rule outcomes generating, ahem, unintended consequences...I`m standing by for a finessing of the rules down to prohibition during daylight hours of "wire trace or non-homogeneous monofilament line" etc.Followed by another workaround...followed by another loophole found... Gail et al - this is what happens when you bow to special-interest yuppie latte-set group-lobbying by people whose sensibilities are offended by someone daring to have a line in the water. If the terminal tackle actually used was as advised in the above posts - then, regardless of one`s personal opinions of the pastime, regardless of whether it was intentional or not, I must acknowledge that (arguably) a group of individuals have made a rather profound socio-political statement...
