I can't agree with you this time Cal, for far too long we have taken this crap, time to stand up for our rights although it is a painfully long and drawn out process. As said, we do have Tea Tree Gully Council's agreement even tho' you are technically only supposed to fish here with a Council permit (see the link I posted on this page)And TB, unfortunately, because we have traditionally fished here for many years does not in any way make it legal mate? Public Liability are two of the worst words in any recreational activity nowadays and don't the Lawyers luv it?

Must confess your comment raised a little giggle from this dyed in the wool reddy addict but it would be very difficult to compare shark fishing with redfin fishing at any level and as far as I know (and please don't quote me?) there has never been a single human redfin attack fatality anywhere in the World :clap:As an aside, it is a scientific fact that redfin actually sleep at night so a ban would be totally un-neccesary between the hours of 9pm and 5am

This is a really interesting topic. In the past I have used chicken, steak, bacon, and even pepperoni when I ran out of bait once.Since the new shark laws came into effect, I have been using only chicken breast in small strips as bait, as it seems many others do the same.I didn't think I was attracting sharks at all using chicken because of its low blood content. And I never use it on jetties or around swimmers.I never thought I was breaking the law.Be a shame if I can't use good old chicken, because it really is a gun bait on bream and flathead.

bent87You did mean "night time hours" I presume, if referring to the metro shark fishing tackle restrictions? Probably an irrelevant consideration, because there is actually nothing to stop you from fishing metro LB for shark during the day anyway - as long as you use nothing bigger than an 8/0 and mono trace no thicker than 1mm...although you would be guaranteed a hard time regardless, I suspect, given the political drivers for the introduction of those particular regulations...That aside, an extract from the fishing regs to ponder - note it refers to Berley not Bait;23—Berleying(1) A person must not use blood, bone, meat, offal or skin of an animal as berley (otherwise than in a rock lobster pot or other fish trap) within 2 nautical miles of—(a) the mainland of the State; or( any island or reef that forms part of the State and is exposed at the low water mark.Maximum penalty: $2 500.Expiation fee: $210.(2) A person must not deposit or use in marine waters of the State the body, or part of the body, of a mammal or bird.Maximum penalty: $2 500.Expiation fee: $210.Unless someone interprets the above as "no animal berley within 2nm of land" and "no use whatsoever (ie for bait) in all marine waters" ...thus completely disregarding that Reg 23 is specifically titled "Berleying"... it would appear by logical inference that a chunk of meat on a hook is fine...for Bait. However, the PIRSA interpretation of the Regulations pursuant to the Act appears to be a little different, looking at the last item on the FAQ link; What about the use of small amounts of meat for berley or bait when targeting fish such as mullet? The intent of the law is to minimise the impact berleying may have on attracting sharks to areas close to other water users. It is considered unlikely that these products will have significant attractant properties and so they will be dealt with in the same manner as commercial berley. Compliance officers will use their discretion in weighing up the circumstances of its use.Notice how "or bait" has subtly crept into their departmental interpretation of the Regs?

It is entirely legal to use these meat items, but for HOOK bait only Lots of interesting chat on S&H about the misconceptions surrounding this fact as PIRSA do not allow meat and chicken or other animal based meats for burleying or in crab nets.I have always used meats for all my fishing in boats or in the surf, chicken breast is outstanding in tiny cubes for mullet, garfish, flathead, whiting, bigger pieces for bream. Yesterday, (10.8.13)I fished the Coorong in my mates tinny and caught double header ST's on waste bits of fatty venison taken from a hunted Deer, although ANY red or white meat works equally effectively

They're selling complete starter fly fishing kits, line, rod and reel for @90 bucks at Beach Road tackle shop, was in there today (13/7/2013).And yes, you can fish a team of wet flies attached to a bubble float half filled with water to give it a long cast. This method was so effective in the UK that some waters have banned it  If you still have an interest in getting into this fascinating branch of fishing strikehook has a whole Board on fly fishing full of great pics and advice?Cheers, tonyb

I've had a fair bit of input with this issue as I have been lobbied by my local polly Amanda Rishworth and have had verbal input on her blog site and must confess that I have plumped very heavily on the yes side, more especially because there is a very strong argument that the millions of dollars that Mobil will need to demolish this huge Jetty could be put into a fund to make this jetty a tourist, rec fishing, scuba diving, dog walking, environmental education tool etc. rather than the dismaying option of it being demolished and lost forever to all South Australians!!Talk of a cafe/kiosk, shelters, iconic art works with the added proviso of safety railings and maybe even toilets and BBQ areas with an associated FREE car parking area at the base of the Jetty sounds incredibly appealing to me and make no mistake, Noarlunga Council is showing awesome leadership in getting this project off the ground so I am more than a little amazed that we have so many naysayer's and it brings me around once again to the perception by other States that we in Adelaide are the sleepy old backwater of Australia. The power of the people and the power of positive thoughts and deeds are what is needed here and I for one heartily applaud yakattacks brilliant initiative Cheers, tonyb.

Caught mine off glenelg jetty with live tube worms during colder months. Was there between 8pm and 2am, high tide. Try at 3/4 jetty and throw right (don't have to throw very far), paternoster rig and wait. good luck

I agree! If thats an offer of support then please direct all friends to www.facbook.com/savetheportstanvacjettyBasically at this stage we just need a show of numbers. When we get to 1000 the next step begins. The sooner the better as there is little time to waste. So please EVERYONE show your support and share this link around. There is a team WAITING to get to work on this; to take the next steps but we need support. After you 'like' the page you can sit back an leave it to us or write a letter to your local members or candidates. This is NOT IMPOSSIBLE.. but if everyone does nothing then it wont happen.WAKE UP SA FISHERS. ACT NOW. RIGHT NOW

Tacklebags, thank you, you are a voice of reason Re Brett's comment that 'This in essence is a secure feeding zone that they can stop at whilst travelling up and down the gulf to breed.'It then bewilders me that you want to protect an en-route feeding ground to aggregation point, but then once Snapper get there (upper Gulf) you are then happy, and indeed advocating, to catch them while they are in the act? Sounds crazy to me.This jetty is not just about Snapper. It is a section of beach, and an already built deep-water platform that the community should have access to.

Hey keep the good ideas about possible managment options coming guys. Very interesting stuff! You know Im sure there is a lot of common ground amoungst fisher folk. Access restrictions, environmental concerns and fishery mannagment issues are close to all our hearts. I think it would be great if we could work together and support each others initiatives. This one is for the landbased fishers, the next issue could be one affecting mostly boaties.. Only together we have the numbers! Also if you have visited and "LIKED" the Facebook page be sure to share it or reccomend it to all of your friends, we have a great response so far but we really need to keep the momentum going!www.facebook.com/savetheportstanvacjettyThanks again,Dave.

I note with extreme interest the amount of anglers, who for reasons totally unknown to them and also to me, have assumed an almost mythical status for this Mobil Jetty as a massive fish hang out and an iconic feeding spot for native fish including Snapper! This seems to be almost entirely founded on the basis that no-one has had access to whatever fish are in there, so, there must be masses of them as in the "grass is always greener on the other side" Think of the States Reservoirs which have been a mouth wateringly enticing carrot of masses of hungry big fish of all species just waiting to jump on any anglers hook, audacious enough to either trespass, or in my case, "DARE TO DREAM" we might all have legal access as our Interstate cousins have enjoyed for more that two decades due to a forward thinking Government! How have these mythical tales of 100 lb Kingfish and line smashing 35 lb Snapper, among super-sized KGW and so forth come about? The reality is we have a rock wall harbour (Sully's Harbour) a few hundred metres south of Mobil's Jetty of supposedly fishing nirvana, which in actual fact, boasts a sprinkling of tommies, Gar, Mullet, a few bream and I've even heard of a rare pinky snapper or two when conditions are perfect. I personally refuse to believe, until some "expert" who has done the work on surveying the fish populations tells us otherwise, that the fish here are indeed of gigantic proportions and that we should make a Sanctuary of the Jetty.Should this be the case and we do have a go ahead for a Sanctuary, and make no mistake if funding is provided, the Government will be committed to an EIS (Environmental Impact Statement), the problem will then be to lift people out of their apathy and get them to fight for what they want instead of, as one poster wrote, "Let it all slide under the sea"
