By fishing somewhere else, it's to avoid confrontation. After a news release like that, you're bound to have a lot of anti-sharko vigilante idiots out there. Don't put yourself and your $1000++ equipment in danger. You can put forth your point of views without purposely heading to a location knowing you'll get yourself into a fight. At the end of the day, if you land a punch on some idiot who touches your rod, you'll make yourself look worse thanks to the media. Also, the more likely charge will be for assault rather than tampering with another person's fishing equipment illegally seeing that one can be concretely proven with marks and bruises whereas the other is most likely hearsay. Put forth your point of view through either the media, the appropriate people/organisation/clubs and of course if you want, a non-aggressive rally. Educate the public through fairs or any other activities. Just don't purposely go up to the jetty to prove a point. You'll be doing no one else except these anti-sharkos and the media a huge favour.

Made a reply on this other topic but since this topic is re-opened, I'd post my comment here:Only a matter of time I suppose before the mayor did this. Wasn't surprising. Unfortunate incident though. Best to avoid this jetty and fish somewhere else with less publicity. Seems like they're trying to get shark fishing banned on other jetties. Being aggressive wouldn't help the sharkos' cause now. Best to suck it in and move on, let things simmer down. Most important of all, no more shark pictures in the papers. Henley and Grange seem to be next....On a side note, I have seen some rather aggressive sharkos. They aren't teens. People in their 30s - 40s. Wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones doing the illegal burleying. The few times I've been on the jetty with teenage sharkos, they've been really responsible. I saw no burleying. Just baited balloons. Unfortunately, the act of a few irresponsible people spoils the fun for the rest of us. Rather sad...On the news, catching a gummy shark and mutilating it? Are those journos interviewing people with a screw loose? I've only ever read of fishos KEEPING gummies since they are the few sharks that make for a good feed. I may be wrong but if I were lucky enough to land a gummy, that shark's not going back in the water. It's as precious as the KGs to me. Perhaps these people are confusing Port Jacksons with gummies. Wouldn't be surprised if that were the case...

What did I say yesty? amazing, mustve had a crystal ball!!I think for the better of this forum and all serious, responsible Skark fishos, this thread should be deleted or at least several posts removed. The spotlight is now well and truelly on, and plenty of posts in this thread are doing much more harm than good for our cause.I bet you my left nut many of you guys wouldn't say half the things you do behind a keyboard to peoples faces, much less bravado Next time your about to click send at the end of a post youve typed, think "would I say this to some ones face" and if not, I suggest you dont hit send.....media, beat up, doesnt happen often, much

Guys, I understand the frustrations this topic causes on both sides of the fence.I would like to provide you all with the chance to say your piece and air your views on the subject, but I see tempers flaring and things getting heated. So before anyone "loses their sh*t" at anyone else, and before anyone says something they may regret later which causes repercussions, as a favour to you all, I think it best that this topic be locked for 24 hours, just to give everyone time to take a breath, cool off, and collect their thoughts before we resume.I trust you consider that the fairest option for everyone.

ok guys and girls where to begin.sorry that i havnt been following this post because i am computerless at the moment... hahai am not afraid to say that the news report was referring to me about the angler who pulled a knife. yes that was me and a mate down there but its not how the media would have it seem. me and a mate arrived at normanville around 6 oclock in the arvo an old guy was fishing the jetty that i had met a few nights ago while a bunch of my mates were sharking. any way we unpacked the yak and rods etc and loaded up the left side of the jetty no rods were in the water yet because we were still preparing. the old guy was fishing the right hand side of the jetty for squid on the little reef to the right. by now the time was edging closer to 7 we had a chat for a while why we prepared our SNOOK BAITS with rubberbands etc and balloons.when we were ready my mate hopped in his yak next to the jetty on the left side and i walked onto the beach and loaded his yak with my bait brick etc he paddled out about 150m to the ne side of the jetty and laid my bait out in the water with no oil.when he returned it was his baits turn i asked the old guy politely mate where just taking this bait out as far as that one can u please wind in ur line for a minute, he did know worries we set that bait up.after i arrived back on the jetty from along side the jetty i noticed that the old guys squid line had drifted over my mates shark line. just a simple crossed line which can be resulted in switching rods anyway but now he said to me can u wind that sharkline in its in my way. i said na mate sorry its out there on a brick can i just move the rod out of ur way. well i can say he didn like that he went on to sayin im sik of u shark fisherman tryn to take over MY jetty ive been fishn here for 50 years eff off eff use im sick of all of use coming down her. by all of use i guess he means every sharker that has been down normy. why should i be held responsible for every sharker it was my first time down there?? anyway i went on with my buisness about to cut a ray bait up and he said are u gonna move this rod i said no so he continued to argue by this time hes inbetween mine and my mates rod he said to me i should throw this shit in the water. i turned around he had my custom sabre nd tiagra in his hands i stood up i had the knife in my hand in not 1 way of form did i hold it towards him or threatin him with it i told him he better put it down so he dropped it and lucky i tie my rod nd reel to the jetty or the combo would of hit the floor and probs scratched my reel. he said wat are u goin to do with the knife stab me.. i said no and dropped it and i started to get aggresive with him because of what he just did i yelled at him and said hes lucky he doesnt get thrown in the water and we argued a bit longer. not once did i lay hands on him or he did to me so it was a verbal argument anyway wen my mate came up to the jetty i told him wat happened and we were thinking of leaving but we didnt so the old guy left and then next there was a cop coming down and he charged me with assult which didnt happen there was a verbal argument between 2 people. and the officer said i have to take the old guys word because i know him!!!!!so there is my version of events from that afternoon. as for shark fishing and kids i do yhave respect for children in the water but seriously why would you let your kids swim as far as 100m offshore in the afternoons. i would be concerned to for my childrens safety concerned enough to take them to the swimming centre!!! shark fisherman arnt the blame for sharks being in close. during summer as the water temperature warms up certain species will start to move closer to shore. sharks come in at this time of year as well to drop there pups and to feed on the abundance of bait. anyway the discussions could go on forever i hope most of u can understand my writing haha cheers tp

Get it into your heads that this is the thin end of a very big wedge !Its not just YOU this affects, ite's EVERY sharker and fisho out there that your comments affect !Have a read of this

You might not realise it at the time. but every antagonistic comment made is playing right into the hands of the very people who would like to see shark fishing banned for both you and your mates.

Well said AFF and Jack. I am on the side of the sharkers but most are doing themselves little favours by posting what some are on here. We have a local whom is concerned about the welfare of his kids and others from his town, regardless of if his understanding is a little wrong , and then you get a few defensive fishos who pretty muchset at instigating more crap by saying "well i will be there this weekend lets see what happens" seems more like some want to make things worse rather than better.Use your brains boys and let things cool off for a while. It is obvious that a group of fishos challenging the local people on the internet looks childish and will draw more unwanted attention than anyone wants.Comments Like "I will do what i want when i want" will turn the general puplic against the fishos at the drop of a hat.The intentions may not be to instigate trouble or make things more tense, but it is certainly what it will do, it just common sense. Hope this comes to a conclusion that does not prevent such a great pastime from being banned or have stricter rules in place.Any sharky replying to this thread needs to take a deep breath and remember its easy to get riled up when its your number one passion on the line. Keep calm and use your brains as there will be alot more people watching this thread than what some of you may think.

Gday PikkOn,As a general rule for mullies off the beach an fsu 5120 wrap is recommended...Yes they are a bit stiffer but if you have a large fish on they come into their own and if something unforseen happens you can put the hurt on without worrying about snapping the rod...Snyder makes a good fsu 5120 - and if you want to go for something a bit longer and more easy to cast - a wilson fsu 6144 is a good all round strong rod....Best talking to your local fishing shop to explain the wrap...As for reels - and there are many - I am old school Penn 9500 (eggbeater), they hold a lot of line - have a wide spool and are built to last - and for what they are are pretty cheap to purchase...Again reels are wide and varied and im sure you will find something that works for you..Hope you get on to a few... Cheers..

Ok so your landbased.. 8ft gonna be too short mate. Especially if your bait fishing and live baiting, you wanna get that bait a good distance out. For example..my Westlakes mully rod is a 9fter and that doubles as my snapper rod on jetties. If I'm targeting them at beaches its a 12ft surf rod. The sweet spot should be just over 10ft.. I recommend one of the Daiwa Jig Casters or the Seajiggers. Trust me your gonna have trouble casting big baits out on anything shorter than 9ft.

Oh and when your baitfishing on land for those two species, I wouldn't use anything under 20lb minimum. You don't wanna risk losing a big fish on 15lb that you got.For live baiting mullies, the standard for me is 30lb braided mainline with 60lb leader. Since you're wanting to target the two species on the one rod, better off not to be at a disadvantage. Anyway hope it helps!

that's not the truth of what happened down there! i know the fisherman who apparently brang a knife out on the other fisherman but wasn't like that at all!he was trying to shark fish and the other fisherman didn't like it because hes a local and down there all the time fishing off that jetty and is sick of shark fisherman down there catching them! he said to my mate stop coming down here all the time fishing for sharks! (was his 1st time down there!)he grabbed his shark gear and threatened to through it into the drink ($1600 set up) and he was lucky he didn't get touched by doing that! my mate had a knife there for bait ect but didn't raise it to him! hes lucky he didn't get hurt for doing what he did grabbing a $1600 setup and threatening to through it over the side! the old fella rang the cops after a argument and they sorted it out they must of told the news about it!

Alright, I'll qualify my statement by first saying that I've fished (or used to) fish Pt Giles jetty a helluva lot. One time I saw a school of Dolphin fish cruise past. Big suckers they were and one fella hooked one and we got a real good look before it fell out of the crab net they tried to land it in. This was a fluke, but a very pleasant occurrence that Im really happy to have witnessed and it remains a great memory for me and my old man ....but does that mean I ought to admit to dolphin fish being a viable target from the end of Giles??? No way and I think that was the spirit of the question asked at the beginning of this thread 'that kings are IN westlakes'. 1. I have fished westlakes and port system since I was a kid. And now a days get a fair bit of info from fishing aqaintances and tackle rats in store.... Never ONE single report I've heard.2. If I had to pick one person for an opinion on what's available in WestLakes, it would be SamboMan who knows the place like the back of his hand. You don't just wake up one morning and regularly catch the trophy bream and mulloway from the system. With out power boat access, the kayakers are the ones most likely in the know.... And Samboman happens to be the state champion hobie breamer and top ten in Australia. Probably the bushy or starlo of our westlakes system!!!!(and I don't know this fella or have any interest in blowing sunshine up his bum it's just the Facts). There ain't any Kingies in Westlakes fellas ;)There isn't any black and white in this world and all the theory in the world can prove something but if in Practice there's no capture, you may as well argue the existence of the loch ness monster. Discussion and disagreement is good, but no name calling hey lads. Else I have to come back as Jack the moderator in Blue Ink ;)Cheers all

Don't get it with the name calling. If you've fished westies and caught a kingie, that'll disprove the naysayers. What we have here is an experienced West Lake fisho who has caught almost all the species in West Lakes and yet to catch a Kingie. The reason Sambo's saying no is because he hasn't caught a kingie and neither has there been solid proof that someone else has through photo evidence. If he's really such an idiot, why don't the ones who disagree spend the next 1 year fishing west lakes, catch your kingie and show beyond all doubt that kingies exist. I'm with Sambo here.Urhookedfish brought up a really valid point which seem to have been ignored. Habitat issues? Similar to why certain fish available in other states aren't available here in SA despite the ocean being connected. Since I'm in a squidding mood, giant squids aren't caught in SA waters for the same reason.

Ive been watching this thread with interest, as I was lucky enough to get stuck into a school of rugger snapper in west lakes near the rowing club with fellow angler J Walkley. All fish where approx 33-35cm.I was planning on fishing the same area the following year to see if they had grown to legal but didnt get round to it as I live down south.Just the sheer array of fish in the lakes indicates that anything and everything can get in there as juveniles. The big question we need to ask is, are the rat kings that we see along our coasts...ie Marino (where I hooked about an 8lber), are these escaped farm fish..if so then they may have escaped at an age that is too big to get into west lakes. It seems to me that no one has caught any Rat kings that are tiny, and I mean a size that could swim into the lakes. Not sure exactly what size they would need to be, but Im thinking that the Kings are not breeding in Gulf st vincents at all. Ie not spawning? if someone could categorically say that yes, they have spawned in this gulf, then at that stage, I would say there is every chance that they will find there way into the lakes as the Snapper did and all the other fish that are currently found in there!Cheers,Brett
