Hi all.Just wondered if anyone has tried jigging for our local mulloway I'm thinking more of a Vibe style lure like freshwater guys use on callop etc, and not sure if they are available for saltwater use ?Would be interesting to drop a jackall or similar into some structure and see what happens

I have a 4000 saros but need a rod to match it for the tingas.Tell me what outfit you're runnin' plus line and rigs I know not asking for much, but i'm gonna make a concerted effort this year and give 'em a good crack locally. Previous outfit was a 2500 sienna and Catana 702 rod. The li'l sienna got flogged using for squid, whiting etc and rod got broke :(Is a 4000 shimano reel overkill?

Well, today was the day that was. Or rather wasn't! After waking up at 6am, and preparing for a 7am start to the 21st Annual Snapper Comp, we were greeted with a stiff breeze coming from the North West. Phoned UHF for a quick discussion regarding the days plan of action. We decided to hold off for a bit and see what the weather was doing. As it turned out, the wind did not back off. In fact, it felt like it got stronger. It did swing around from the North West to South Westerly. As far as fishing at Whyalla goes, the Southerly winds, whether it is from the SW, S or SE, and if it has some strength to it, it usually spells the end of fishing for smaller boats. Big Red, UHF and Spedo launched from Point Lowly at around 10 and headed for the North end of Fitzgerald bay. We launched almost an hour later also from Point Lowly. The wind was around 14 knots. By 1 o'clock, BigRed, UHF and Spedo had accounted for a few Dog Sharks but so far we had drawn a Donut. We did attempt to anchor up once, but the wind was quite strong and the anchor refused to stick. We did find a couple of reasonable sized schools and drifted baits through for a continuation to our Donut. The wind continued to rise and by 2pm, Whyalla Sea Rescue had issued an All Weather alert to all craft with suggestion for all craft to return to the ramps. By that stage, we had already returned to the Ramp at Point Lowly. No day's fishing is complete without at least one peanut cutting boats off and in this case we were not let down. A boat of around the 6m length cut through the queue of boats waiting at the ramp. We got the boat back on the trailer at 2.30 and were greeted by fisheries officers who enquired about our catch. However, with nothing to declare, we went on our way. By this time, the wind was blowing hard at plus 30 knots. Shortly after, the Police arrived, we assume, to ensure all craft returned safely. Travelled back into Whyalla and checked out the leader board. 5 fish had been weighed in with the leader being 7.62kg which was caught by a resident of Kapunda. Of the 5 fish on the board, 2 were caught by Kapunda Residents and the other 3 caught by Locals. Not sure how BigRed, UHF and Spedo faired in the end but we returned to the caravan park for a few ales and to prepare for our next assault. The forecast not looking real good so we will have to play it all as it comes.

G"day plug her, with big flattys there is no right or wrong, what I do with them is bake them whole, dont waste as much meat imo.Rub some butter on a big sheet of foil, get the flattie score some slits in its flanks in to these place a slice of lemon.in the guts add a dob of butter ,some tinned tomatoes[these add moisture and juice] a slice or 2 of onion, a sprinkle of salt and pepper.Wrap the sucker up, sealed but loose throw it in the oven preheated for half an hour or so ,magnifico. But then again battered fillets are awesome as well, pretty much impossible to screw a fish of such fine quality up. B)The sweetest most tastiest tender meat is around the gut ,and right at the back of the head.

Flathead are one of the best tasting fish out there. Right up with KG in my opinion. As a chef I would put flathead on the menu as a special and get more comments than any other fish (apart from Atlantic Salmon)Half your luck with the big one. For me good seafood needs very little attention. Cooked simply they taste the best. Leave all the sauces and smothering with herbs and spices for the poorer tasting species. Perhaps fillet, then season with S&P, lightly flour, cook in a little oil and butter, squeeze of lemon or lime, that's all that is needed for a great meal. Batter or crumb is OK, but pan fry like I mentioned and it will taste supurb !

This tempura-style batter is light and crisp and so easy to make - all you need is a frying pan. I'm partial to flathead fillets, but any firm, white fish will do. I like to serve this with a preserved lemon aioli but my kids reckon it's pretty good with tomato sauce. Ingredients Serves 2 6 small flathead fillets ½ cup self-raising flour ½ cup cornflour ½ cup carbonated mineral water 250ml vegetable oil Method Cut flathead fillets in half lengthways. Mix the flours in a medium bowl. Add mineral water and mix well. Place fish fillets into batter and coat well. Place oil in a 22cm pan over moderate heat. If your pan is larger, add more oil so it is about 1cm deep. Test the oil by dropping a little batter into the pan; it will sizzle when the oil is hot. Pick up a fillet with a fork and drain the excess batter into the bowl, then carefully lay the fish in the pan.Repeat, cooking a few at a time for 2-3 minutes each side until lightly golden. Drain on paper towel.

Depends what you want with it! If 'twere me I'd fillet, when the rib bones are cut out you get a long V cutout down the fillet, I usually continue this down the fillet 'til it's in half lengthways & then cut into equal size pieces. This way you get a chance to cook the thick pieces for a bit longer without the thin end being overdone. Then it's up to you, Ranger's beer batter, a nice tempura or coat in corn flake crumbs (much crunchier and tastier than breadcrumbs)CheersWahoo

As Just_Me has stated i own the 530c and have found it to suit my needs quite well, i updated from a Brooker fisherman C/Console as it was not family friendly. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have and will give you info you wish to know. Bear in mind all boats have their good and bad points and even they depend on what the individual is looking for. ;)Feel free to PM me if you wish.

I've done St.kilda to Ardrossan with a mate and it was a bit of breeze when we left st.kilda and i said its going to pick and get rough but a guy that fishe's once a year said it will be cool, got out pass the black pole and started to hit some waves and still he wanted to go,in my eyes we were still safe we got to ardrossan and it was blowing hard from the south south west and i said we can head back and the weather would be on starboard quarter,he was sick as a dog and said drop me of at the ardrossan ramp and he would rather walk home so i rang up and had car and trailer brought to ardrossan and haven't heard from him since, pays to know the area leaving and going to,have fished edithburgh many times but has a nick name "windyburgh".
