Nice little story there w2Bf I can relate to your frustration losing a good anchor. I've lost about three good grapnels, with chain in the rip, until i was told how to set an anchor up properly by the late Laurie Birdseye.Wasn't a shackle issue, just getting them snagged on the bottom and not having the power to pull them free. And there aint no way i'm diving down into 25 meters of rip water to retrieve anything

well, took the boat out yesterday after work for a quick sesh. ended up in about 10ft of water flicking around soft-plastics for snapper. on my 3rd cast i hooked a nice flathead which swam straight to the surface and gave me a good eyeball of it before spitting out my plastic and swimming back down. i was spewing but happy as well because mate Will and I had always suspected that we would get flathead in this spot and now we had confirmation that they were there. Will hooked and landed a nice snapper not long after which i reckon would have gone 42cm but he wanted to make sure so put it up to the measuring sticker on the side of the boat where it decided to jump out of his hands straight back into the water. Oh well, at least we had each hooked (and in his case landed) quality fish on SP's which was our mission for the trip.not long after the Snapper jumped back in i noticed we were drifting. Will jumped up and pulled up the anchor rope and that was all we got back, the anchor rope. my 20ft of chain and anchor had come off, the stainless steel D shackle had loosened and finally come undone. i was f :c g spewing, i could see myself having to fork out $150 for a new anchor and chain so, despite the fact that the tide was almost in making the water nearly 13ft deep, the sun was half set and i didnt have a snorkel or flippers, i jumped straight in and tried a few duck dives looking for it. i reckon i tried for about 20 minutes before accepting that i would have to wait until daylight and a low tide to have any chance of getting it back. So, today i rushed home from work, hooked the boat up and my mate daniel and i headed out to try and retrieve it. it wasnt ideal conditions, im not sure how strong it was but there was a pretty decent NE blowing but the water was reasonably clear so we got to the spot i was at the day before and tied an anchor he had bought with him to my anchor rope and anchored up near where i had marked my anchor. i jumped straight in and started swimming around looking for my anchor. i could see the bottom fairly well and it was only around 9ft deep so i was optimistic that i would find it. it took me about half hour but eventually i saw the chain lying n the sand. my heart leapt and i duck dived straight down, grabbed it and swum it back to the boat. Might have to go buy $150 of fishing tackle with the money i saved when i come down to adelaide next week to see the folks for xmas :cheer: Moral of the story is that if you must use stainless steel D shackle's for ur anchor then MAKE SURE THEY ARE TIGHT OR PUT WIRE OR SOMETHING ON IT TO MAKE SURE IT CANT COME UNDONE. they have a habit of gradually loosening over time as i found out the hard way. it took mine 8 months to loosen and come off and im just glad it happened in 8ft and not 80ft. from now on i shall be using galv D shackles or if i do use stainless steel do it up with a shifter and check it regularly for tightness. some might say rookie mistake but oh well, the story had a happy ending and hopefully i can save someone from losing an anchor! :side:

With the baby trout hanging about in plague proportions, they should move on in the dark. are u sure they arnt tommies? Might be worth chucking out a livey, with all the bait about U never know a mulloway or two could be lurking. I've caught Mullies near by, and there's no reason why they wouldn't be there. Best of luck.

So, we all have a favorite drop (or 3). A "Spot X" if you like. whether it be natural bottom or a drop that has been made out of car bodies or whatever. I'm not necessarily talking about snapper either, could be a whiting drop or a flatties drop or a mixed bag drop. DO U FEED IT UP? have u found that dumping burley there regularly keeps it fishing well? do u sometimes go out and burley it up and not fish it that day? what do u use, i have heard chicken pellets can do the job and i use them for my surface burley mixed with tuna oil or throw them out loose on shallow whiting spots. i have a mate who uses pilchard in a can cat food on his drops. another mate is a chef and can get lots of fish frames and stuff like that which we were planning on dropping on one of our snapper drops. What do ya's think? worth it? i have spoken to another mate who said that when he does it he puts it in a weighted bag so as it stays on the drop and doesnt get carried away with the tide. opinions?

I only burley up whilst fishing, scaling bag, with a paver or 2 and a frozen block. Then whilst the tide is slack, I throw handfuls of chopped chunks over. I have one off those plastic trap door bombs aswell, but rarely bother with it.I have heard of one guy who "feeds" his fish. Reckons he takes a hessian bag full or barley and other mixed grains, bessa block in it and then throws it over. the hessian bag slowly decays or gets ripped apart by the feeding fish he reckons

wishing2Bfishing reacted to Kangaroo_Island_Fisherman in Making a Berley Pot Cam!! now I need help identifying a mysterious fish
My dad bought a gopro hero 3 for various online webinars or something along those lines, but as soon as I saw it and the waterproof housing in which it came I immediately thought of applying it to fishing. A pole mount has been ordered so I can make Gaffcam and Netcam, but something else came into mind...Berleycam.Many minutes were used pondering how best to mount the camera to the berley pot, the first idea was to just bolt it straight onto it:After a quick test out at the local jetty, it quickly became apparent that there was no way to control the direction of the camera, after all, it needs to be pointing in the direction of the berley trail. This opened up another session of sitting and pondering many ideas on how to do this, perhaps a parachute to catch the tide?? This idea was quickly dismissed as the whole video would just be of a plastic bag.The next idea was to attach a paravane onto the berley bucket in the hope of acting like the parachute but with minimised camera space taken up.This was once again tested at the jetty and just as quickly as it went in the water it was taken out as it was completely useless. Back to the drawing board...Still utilising the paravane, I thought of mounting the camera straight onto the paravane which was bolted to the top of the berley pot, with the fin of the paravane acting like the back fin of a windmill which would ensure the camera points into the berley:This was tested with success down at the jetty, so the next step is to test it out in the boat, where there is actually fish around and a decent tide running. i have tried uploading the video but I think it may be too large (250MB and is an .mp4).Cheers, KIF

I think common sense comes into it. Fishing 86lb braid shouldn't break a pe5 rod. As long as you don't high stick it or fish stupidly high drag settings the rod should be fine.Ill add something else here, most Japanese rods with pe ratings usually state a maximum drag weight in their specs.

I believe pe is the unit of measurement that the Japanese use to measure a lines diameter. It's not a breaking strain as such.As a general rule. Pe 1 is 10lb, 2 20lb etc. But you can have a Japanese line which is pe3 that breaks at 50lb.
