Rod reacted to Seeseacol in Fur seal population drops in Coorong, SA but control measures still planned
    Good question, I've never heard them referred to as feral, might be a good title though, but the term feral generally refers to creatures that were introduced by humans and have gone wild. The NZ Fur Seal has always been around and are not restricted to just NZ, but they usually prefer remote rocky shorelines as opposed to sheltered gulf regions.. The occurrence of large numbers in the Coorong in the time of our record keeping is rather unusual, especially way upstream into the freshwater regions like Milang and Murray Bridge. { I actually found a dead bull at Point Sturt in the reeds 2 weeks ago, reason of death unknown }

I have mentioned before I worked with Marine Animals for 10 yrs primarily in rescue and rehabilitation, as well as some mammal training in the old and now defunct Marineland of Sth Australia. We used to receive/capture quite a few NZ Fur Seals, mostly pups and adolescents usuallly seperated from the main colonies and parents. The populations back then, approx 15 yrs ago were restricted to areas like Kangaroo Island, large herds now in the Gulf of St Vincent is relatively new, especially the lower lakes.

I'm not one for carrying backpacks or drink bottles when river fishing as I like to fish as light as possible. This small item is an essential part of my river fishing.. it's called the Life Straw.

Here's what I carry with me at all times when trout fishing the rivers since suffering a severe stomach & bowel infection from drinking the water direct from the rivers here in Tassie..I finished up being on a special Government authorised script for two weeks. It's called a Life Straw and it's used in many countries around the world where the drinking water is polluted. It filters 99.99999% of bacteria etc out of the water as you suck the water up through it.. I've always drank the water straight out of the rivers when trout fishing until the day I became very ill. It hit me around 5 hours after getting home from the Leven River after a fishing session I had. I did as I normally did and that was to drink the water straight from the river not realising ( or even thinking) about the run off from the paddocks that had cattle in them. We had quite a bit of rain several days earlier and I didn't even give it a thought.. I do now and that's why I spent $28.00 on the Life Straw which I have used for nearly two trout seasons now. It can filter 1000 litres of water so it's will last me quite a few seasons yet..

I've seen 'first posts' a few times on fishing forums that contain agenda based questions by radical greenies.  You know, the kind that scream "murderers" to a man and his son fishing off a warf.  I suspect others have seen this type of thing.   With no context or introduction in your original post you got what should be expected in the responses.  ie a mixture due to confusion about the context of the question and people wondering what is your agenda.  Otherwise you would have got more "sincere responses" I suspect

    TAT,

I think Rod is correct here. With no clear context people will wonder what your agenda is. So........ I can accept at the outset, that perhaps your initial approach was a little naive. However, having received all the responses above, to steadfastly maintain the position that people have jumped unnecessarily to conclusions is really naive. You are 'poking the bear' and are surprised when it bites you hand.

Your post has got a lot of hits for all the wrong reasons, but it's uncovered some latent wits, Pauline and Unicorns! Love it. She is/was also deluded.

For the sake of the intellectual and purely philosophical thoughts I assume your seeking I'll offer the following.

It's one of the few places I experience solitude, a rare commodity on a crowded earth, a time when I can reflect on what is really important in life, undistracted by someone trying to sell me something in a consumerist world.

It allows me to look at and appreciate nature at it's finest, dolphins, sea eagles, whales, sharks, fish and seabirds. The pastime influences the way I view the world.

When we fish, we are targetting table species. There is always a degree of bycatch that is inedible or undesirable. But they are thrown back. Some live and some die, usually from barotrauma. I don't like waste or unnecessary death, but I accept it as part of it. After filleting the fish we take, I always try and put the waste back in the water to become part of the food chain again. I foresee a future when some undesirables become table fare, travel to the mediterranean and you'll see that in action. A guy in an large Athen's fishmarket told me most of his fish was imported from New Zealand.

Any fish we keep are eaten and not wasted, unless my adolescent son unplugs the freezer to vacuum his car and doesn't turn it back on!!!!!!

With a little forethought and research of this website, you would have found lengthy discussions and 'conflict' of Rec's v Pro's v Govt v Greenies etc in the fishing fraternity. Personally I think the least damaging way to catch fish is with a line and hook and there are some Pro's that fish that way. The industrialisation of fishing is environmentally destructive in a way not possible by recreational fishers. An analogy...... farmer clears trees with an axe v Corporation uses bulldozers and fire to speed up the process and maximise profits.

Either way I'll be fishing till I can't get up or get it up.

Whilst we're on philosophy. What about this once proud country becoming a nanny state. Rules and more rules pervading our society to extent that we need signs everywhere we go preventing us from imminent danger. How is that affecting the human gene pool buy robbing morons of their god given right to go kill themselves, sometimes after saying "hey watch this"????

    What are your thoughts?

I can't "morally justify" it, I just like killing things and the gubernment took my guns away. Last time I stabbed a human the judge didn't see the funny side so fishing it is.

They already wiped out the fairy penguins at Victor, people have been working for decades to protect them (the penguins), I don't think they even ate them, they just kill for something do when they are not eating.  This what i heard, just google it and can't find a lot about it though?

I worked managing the RSPCA Marine Rescue of S.A. inc for 10 years and as such am pretty knowledgeable regarding marine mammals, handled, nursed and rehabilitated and tagged many Seals, Dolphins Penguins, Seabirds etc.

Yes Seals of many species eat Penguins regularly, and yes it is a good chance they are responsible for the demise of the Victor Penguins

Trivia ....just for your interest we used to capture a lot of Seals in my employ at the RSPCA and often the stomach contents revealed Penguin pieces, usually the feet and beaks were rejected in vomit. A Seal is very adept at catching and skinning Penguins before consumption, and quite often a walk along the southern beaches, mainly Winter months turn up many Penguin carcasses consisting of just skin and feet.

The only  solution in my mind is seen as draconian, the average member of the public will never condone it, and nobody would want responsibility for a cull, particularly vote hungry politicians ...very very tough solution to control the problem

OK OK Bob, I've been drooling over your sausage roll exploits for a very long time.  Well now I have done my best puppy dog eyes and the mrs has agreed to make some for me.  What a pity a can't find a bakery that makes them like this, instead they add all the bread and what ever else to end up with horrible mush.  Years since I've had a home made sausage roll, can't wait, thanks Bob

Just find a sausage that you like, de-skin and roll in Pampas.

I like the English Pork, as they are traditionally thicker (usually pig gut skins). The standard 'sausage' seems too thin for me. Also need something with enough fat content, the really lean sausages wont work as well.
