Amazing! 11 pages and going... although everyone is and has put up good arguments over the pros and cons of shark fishing on metro jetties and the beurocrats will in the end - have their way one way or the other,I'm going to dumb it down a bit and although some might not agree - and thats your choice - give you one mans opinion...1. The old fella that took it upon himself to use his age and "local-ness" to abuse the shark fisherman for fishing on "his jetty"???? - broke the law.......If you are angry about life for whatever reason - see a therapist! dont take it out on others....If you approach anyone - abuse them - touch their personal property - and threaten?? That is breaking the law.... can just imagine what would have happened if the tables were turned and the sharko did that to the old man! Anyway - the story goes the "local" police knew the old man and so decided to "believe" and take his side and overlook what happened? why? Because he is old???? frail??? a respected member of the community??? (again my opinion sounds like the police need to go back to police school and re-learn the rules)....2. Bronze whaler shark - diet - fish, squid, offal... White pointer shark - diet - seals, dolphins, fish, other sharks, whales, offal...Fact: In the fiji islands shark fisherman use "rattles" to lure sharks (a stick with coconut shells cut in half and piled on top of eachother) then sort of "shuck shucked" in the water and it brings them to the boat - sounds like a fish thrashing or a (SWIMMER splashing) sends them crazy....The point here is that the sharks will first be lured to the commotion in the water by the swimmers - they will "feel" the vibrations and come in for a look....(that is what a shark does).....BUT

To all the sharkers, below is a copy of an email I have just sent to SARFAC asking for support of shark fishing. To: Sarfac@bigpond.comHi Gary, I’m not sure if you are aware but there is a storm in a tea cup brewing over shark fishing by younger anglers off the Normanville Jetty. This has slowly been gaining momentum over the last few weeks. The surf lifesaving club is claiming that illegal burleying is likely to attract sharks that could kill or injure their kids. They are clearly playing the fear card as we all know that the only species of sharks that are likely to kill or injure their children is Great Whites, and there has been no reports of Great Whites Sharks close to jetties along our entire coastline in many years! The likelihood of one of their children being attacked by either a Gummy or Bronze whaler shark totally negligible.Shark fisherman are being portrayed in a very NEGATIVE fashion by the media in the Victor Harbour times, and this is unjustified and causing the public to be scare mongered to the point where logical rational regarding shark injury risks are being overlooked, because as you know it’s hard to talk reason with someone who is gripped by fear. Here is the article if you are yet to see it.http://www.victorharbortimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/shark-bait-fury/2361238.aspxAs the President of SA Red Taggers which is an ANSA-SA Affiliated club, I am asking for SARFACs urgent support on this matter. The member for Finniss (Michael Penguilly) has been quick to jump on the shark fisherman and crucify them before there voice is heard. These are responsible young anglers that are fishing within the law. Any cases of illegal burleying have been by unknown fisherman and we are totally against this irresponsible behaviour, but the majority of shark anglers on the forum Strike n Hook fish using only legal burleying techniques.I ask that SARFAC acts on this information and provides its support on this as soon as possible before Laws are passed to ban shark fishing at Normanville and then possibly other local beaches. This will be a travesty of justice based on irrational scaremongering if it goes ahead, and would take away an activity that gives anglers great pleasure and satisfaction. As you know our sport is fighting for recognition from the government and if this ban succeeds it will be a blow for the recreation of fishing!Brett OakleyPresidentSA Red Tagger (SART)ANSA-SA

The news article is exactly how "it" starts...and what did I say about bipartisan political support?pikkOn
Forum posting of latest C&R efforts unfortunately in the same category as I too am tempted to say "Move it for now or lose it"...except I suspect that unfortunately the real miscreants would probably not visit this forum anyway - even if everyone reading this site applied more discretion for a while there are others out there for whom that word probably does not exist..."Not doing nothin illegal, maate, wot ya gunna do about it!!??"And they would be strictly speaking correct - for now, but watch this space fellas...just one shark attack or even a couple of close-to-shore sightings (whether fishing related or not) and I have a feeling you will see some pretty impressive regulatory "fast-tracking"...It is a rather PC 21st century world we are living in, sad to say a minority don`t realise it.Wise words - certain parties would love to get some publicity to support their cause given that the MP zoning Public Consultation period is imminent.Timing is everything... they will be very grateful for the opportunity an over-publicised verbal altercation has given them to possibly escalate that to the next level of "violent redneck fishos" belting someone.Speaking of zoning - have a look at the attachment. Would not be hard to permit shore based fishing (including jetties, that one has been repeatedly promised ad nauseam!) but how about a HPZ up to 1km offshore between Christies and Wirrina where targeting sharks specifically is precluded?Could be considered given recent events. They can`t use that rationale for metro thankfully because there are no MPs in that part of the world...then again, a little change to the Fishing Regs...not to mention the Council By-Laws vehicle???"But it`s legal, maaate!" won`t cut it thereafter....MPA_15_E_BW_Geo_A4.pdf

AFF, you beat me to it, you sod!!From chrisjc
For those who keep repeating "but it`s legal" - keep in mind all it takes is a stroke of a regulatory/legislative pen and you won`t even have the option of exercising a bit of restraint or discretion. Keep in mind the times we live in.Won`t happen?Mid 80`s, bicycle hemet implementation, someone wrote in to the Tiser saying why the hell are we doing this, motorcyclists have a dispensation for 25 kmh without a helmet. The minister or a department representative replied (paraphrasing from memory)"The government approach is nothing if not consistent - we intend to remove the 25kmh dispensation for motorcyclists at the same time"And they did. Too easy. How hard would it be to slip in something simple like "no balloons or any float with a volume greater than XX permitted in the following areas, blah, blah".Or "no overnead reels permitted for jetty or landbased use in the metro area between locations X and Y, etc".Or "during daylight hours".There goes the justification on the grounds of supposedly (hmmm) fishing for tuna or kingies... Yeah, it really does stick in the craw to tip-toe around when one is technically supported by the law and regs, but if a publicity push came to a legislative shove I know who would come off second best...and I have a feeling there would more likely than not be a bipartisan support on something like this.

@ SamN, Ekul etc. Do you REALLY want to stir the locals up more and be responsible for turning them against Sharkos in general, which WILL lead to shark fishing being banned ? Get it into your heads that this is the thin end of a very big wedge !Its not just YOU this affects, ite's EVERY sharker and fisho out there that your comments affect !Have a read of this

Well said AFF and Jack. I am on the side of the sharkers but most are doing themselves little favours by posting what some are on here. We have a local whom is concerned about the welfare of his kids and others from his town, regardless of if his understanding is a little wrong , and then you get a few defensive fishos who pretty muchset at instigating more crap by saying "well i will be there this weekend lets see what happens" seems more like some want to make things worse rather than better.Use your brains boys and let things cool off for a while. It is obvious that a group of fishos challenging the local people on the internet looks childish and will draw more unwanted attention than anyone wants.Comments Like "I will do what i want when i want" will turn the general puplic against the fishos at the drop of a hat.The intentions may not be to instigate trouble or make things more tense, but it is certainly what it will do, it just common sense. Hope this comes to a conclusion that does not prevent such a great pastime from being banned or have stricter rules in place.Any sharky replying to this thread needs to take a deep breath and remember its easy to get riled up when its your number one passion on the line. Keep calm and use your brains as there will be alot more people watching this thread than what some of you may think.

Tread warily, people...This forum would be watched by various parties. One or two more "high media profile" shark C&R efforts in the metro area and there could be a game-changer scenario in terms of fishing regs - I can think of something along the lines of "no intentional targeting of sharks within XXX metres of a jetty or patrolled/designated/popular swimming area", for a start. Assertions of public safety requirements and all that.Heaven forbid an attack or fatality this summer whilst there are a couple of heavy duty rods (and balloons) at a jetty in close proximity...all it would need is a little indirect inferred attribution.Blatant berleying techniques aside...whether for sharks or tommies... And yes, I am about to generate screams. And no, it is not illegal.Yet.Join the dots. A little discretion goes a long way...

welcome to the site an good luck. Just use a wire trace and probably a wind on leader for the boat.Float your bait out and catch other fish while you wait.Your rod n reel should be fine, becareful on the boat cozz they will be going spastick in there if your not careful can damage your boat if u bring them on board.

G'day peeps,I've said this on previous threads about the same situation, YES shark habits are changing and anyone that wants to deny this is a walking/swimming appetiser for these great predators...The ban that came in for pointers all those years ago has worked - there are more pointers around now than there has been since before pro fishing started for then in the 40's.....Problem now being lots more people/boats/tourism/food all targeting and attracting these fish.....I have had a lot of experience with these fish and they are a fast learner - probably why they are at the top of the food chain - I think the biggest problem is that people are teaching them where there is humans - boats/noise/ etc. there is a free feed - for example we have tourist boats that go to the same place and burley for these things for a tourist to jump into a cage and take pictures - although the shark doesnt think that way - all it knows is boat noise = food! (sort of like the pavlovs dog theory) - and at times these boats will have 4 to 6 big sharks around the boat......So lets keep it local - one trader burleys around north and south neptune island which as the crow flies is not far away - so on a day when a pointer goes for a cruise can be over here in the gulf in a day ----- same thing though ----- boat noise = food! but this time its mr. and mrs. angler in their 16 foot bellboy sitting a few miles off wirinna minding their own business - or worse a bunch of youngn's wakeboarding off henley! Lots of people here too when they see a pointer will throw food in to get that extra photo or extra minute of video - and that just makes the problem worse - although they are oblivious to what they are doing.....I am a little passionate about this issue, the latest one of my friends was killed only early this year as he came up next to his ab boat and I have lost a few friends over the years - and I still work the ocean yearly and have been in situations recently where the sharks habits were so different I am lucky to still be here....All that said, I still think culling isnt the go, let's stop feeding them first and maybe put them back in their natural state where they dont mix with humans on such a regular basis - let's try that first before we start wiping out such a magnificent machine.....remeber - these fish travel fast and a trip up or down the coast for a thousand k's is just a regular thing for them - throw in the fact that a lot of them now associate boat noise with a feed???? well, its time to be a little more careful....Let's stop feeding them...Cheers...

I copied and pasted the original question on an American forum and got some replies that probably intrest you..but as u guess they say much the same.heres 1I have seen and used a 950ssm and quickly got rid of it. I have a few 9500ss older models along with many other SS models, in my opinion the 9500ss is of a much better quality than the 950ssm. I'm also not crazy about the new features, like the clutch assembly and the A/T bearing, as Akfish mentioned, they're prone to corrosion. If you're shopping for the 950ssm, do yourself a favor and get the 9500ss older model, maybe you'll find the brass gears in it when you crack it open. There is a tutorial here on the 9500ss that shows how to install an additional dog , that's about all that the reel will need, with proper care it should last you till the end of your fishing days.2.I haven't seen a 96500SSm but have seen several 7500SSms. I think they are inferior to the older 7500SS models. The bail is made of thinner wire, the bail spring seems less reliable. And the anti-reverse is suspect because it is a roller bearing -- prone to corrosion -- and liable to fail. 3I'm new to all of this and don't know too much, so take this for what it's worth.I've been looking into a lot of older reels on eBay and bought 7 or 8. I believe the older SS series (i.e. 750ss, 650ss) are metal and made in USA, the 7500ss and 6500SS series are a newer and lighter (although still relatively old) version of the SS series and made in USA, the SSg are graphite and made in China and the SSm models are metal and made in China.I was going out of my way to buy reels that were US made, as I believe they will be superior (although heavier) to anything newer and made in China. I was just looking for durable, easy to work on reels for a beginner and the SS series and Z series fit the bill for me. I am happy with them.4You are doing good bluesideup, ebay is a good place to get some but be carefull, always check the sellers feedback. I also buy some every now and then , most of them will need some parts, but I usually don't send them back, I just try to buy them at a good price. The older 650ss,750ss and the newer 6500ss,7500ss are actually the same waight approximately 1 lb 11oz for the 750ss and they are both made in USA. the 650ss,750ss come with better chromed parts, especially the bail wire. Also the main gear is brass and you can only use the handle on one side, if you need to convert it from left to right hand, you will need a pivot. The 6500ss,7500ss come with the brass gear also, but the later models comes with the aluminum/brass gear, no need to buy a pivot, the gears on the 6500ss, 7500ss will accept the left or right side handle, you have no way of finding out if the gear is brass or aluminum, you'll need to remove the side plate. The 650ssm,750ssm is a different reel, although it shares the same gear as the 6500ss, 7500ss and a few other parts, it is not the same as the older models, it has different features. Some of the earlier graphite models where made in USA, I'm not crazy about graphite on reels, but that's just me. The Z series is also a great model, it will never let you down. I'm glad that you're enjoing these reels, I still use mine today and love everyone of them, I just deposited two 650ss with some nice rods while I was vacationing in Sanibel Florida, the kayak flipt on me and my 13 year old son, I was about 1/2 mile out in the gulf, I was only concerned about my son so I didn't bother diving for them. When we got back to shore, I went back out on my own to try to find them, but no luck. Oh well! I do have replacements though
