Hi fellas, thought I would kick start an old thread and see what you guys have been catching. This is my biggest mully, didn't get the weight but was 141cms tip to tip. Caught on the west coast a few years ago, been a mulloway drought for me since then unfortunately. A lack of fishing doesn't help, hahaha, cheers

They expect the birds to remove a large portion of the dead carp.My father always told me about the days when you could climb a tree and watch big cod swim by.It would be great to see the bottom again.

As part of an ongoing search for the ideal filleting knife for whiting, gar etc., I haven't been able to find a smaller flexible bladed knife with a rounded tip. So I have resorted to trolling the second hand shops and picked up a few of the old bone handled butter knives that are doing the job nicely. The ones I have are made of quality steel from Sheffield in England they sharpen up really well.
With a bit of garden hose over the handle for extra grip, they set me back about $2 each.

So I don't usually keep Bream, but a nice sea run specimen makes for a very tasty meal. This one was caught on Saturday morning, marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, chilli, oregano, salt and pepper during the day and then cooked over charcoals that evening. Was absolutely beautiful. Outdoor cooking... with beer in hand... oh yes.

Is that the Mojiko's or similar? I notice anaconda has the neoprene 1/2 price a couple of times a year but they never have the right size and when I've asked I get told sorry can't order them in they are a run out item....

I think I started a similar thread last winter but never bought anything so this has re kindled my interest....had enough of freezing in the water and shaking, looks a bit dodgy.

I always maintain the first 5 or so games of the season are still preseason games and no indicator of what is to come.

It's also the time at least 4 of what will be the bottom 8 sides will be bashed around as finals contenders and an unexpected loss means wooden spoon material.....

I'd agree with that from experience. I used to lube up after fishing always had ongoing issues, it was like an attractant for grit.

SInce I've been simply cleaning with a strong fine mist of water and reeling on low drag thoroughly haven't had any issues.

I rate daiwa for the salt! ESP the newer ones with mag seal grease (magnetic grease)
They are pricey, but IMO, well worth it! My old luvias had the mag seal, but my 2 sols didn't, and they were really worn till I recently replaced them!
But still put in a great innings after lasting me a good 14 years!
My luvias was the same age, and never serviced, but was still smooth as silk, and dead quiet!
    Pity I stood on it!
Very happy with my new luvias and my caldia!!
Jap model daiwa's are the best IMO... Come with all the high performance bearings and long cast spools.
The new luvias has a very fine drag settings!! (You can give it a good turn for very little increase in pressure) ideal for light lines!
    Smooth and quiet!
The reals with more drag pressure are much easier to make one click too many and cost you a good fish, with the radiculous amounts of drag pressure they put out!! Seems Really pointless having a 2000 model with more than 3-4 kgs of drag to me!
Unless you're fishing for Barra I guess...
Arid would be the best value for money! But personally, I don't like the spool shape for distance..
But very handy being able to upsize reels by simply changing you're spool size with them!
Got a shimmano symetre also that I won, and very happy with that, but time will tell how long it lasts in the salt...
Not a fan of the plastic rotor it has... Hasn't let me down, but I just don't trust plastic parts!
Too many bad experiences in the past buying reels that weren't all metal parts!

1 word of advice if you have a daiwa... Don't spray any aerosol lubes on them!!
Just strips the magnetic grease of them.
    In fact any reel!
It helps when they're seized up... But really grease is the way to go!
I was given a can of inox free with my sols, and they were never the same after that!
They still lasted, but always ran slightly rough, and got noisier as the years passed, until the sound of winding was louder than the drags...
But they did get a lot of abuse in there time with me plenty big carp, bream, schoolies, snapped and eagle Ray's...
Not at all what 2000 size models are designed to do battle with :)

Daiwa Aird 2000 with spare 1000 spool is/was another option.

You could try what I found has been a great reel Siena 1000. Cheaper $38-$59 depending where you buy. Best price was $38 at BCF sale. Had the reel for two years, it gets rinsed fresh and innox spray after each session and still reels like new.
For this price there is no need to really be concerned about knocks and bumps so more focus can be on fishing and I am sure most fisho's that use or have owned one would agree they are worth it and would likely be on par with most other spin reels under $100 or more.

Headed out today with James for a northern flats session! A massive thanks goes to Underpants and Sbarnden for hinting us in the right direction. We started off the day at 6am and arrived on the flats at 6:45am.

The tide was running out which was good but the wind was blowing pretty hard. We set up our stuff and headed straight out. Once we got close to the gutter, James hooks up to a fat whiting on the GULP worms. At first we thought it was a good salmon with the first run but once it came up to the surface, we were stoked. After a quick photo, it went straight into the homemade livewell!

We kept persisting to see if we could get a few more whiting but the toadies kept on chomping out soft plastics. We decided to fish the channel/gutter and that's when the action was hot!  We started bagging some average sized tommies and salmon trout but we wanted to find bigger ones.

We made our way out to deeper water where we spotted a few black rays, but everywhere we went there were only tommies, salmon trout and toadies. We decided to go back shallower to see if we could get a few more whiting, but that's when we spooked a couple of big flathead! (around 45-55cm). I managed to hook one whist flicking for tommies/salmon trout but this one was only a baby.

On the way back in, we stepped on a crab and James was quick enough to snatch it up into the livewell. Just over legal! It was a beautiful day to be out wading (would've been better without the wind  ). Here's just a few more photos!

Zorgs reacted to Alexsfishin1 in St Kilda Winter Bream
St Kilda was slow with the salmon trout this morning, no body had caught one or even had a bite! It was super calm, I couldn't believe my eyes!

So I decided to fish closer in for some bream. I spotted a decent school of 30cm+ fish sitting against the rocks so I gave it a cast and was soon hooked onto a good sized bream. Measured at 34cm and was released after a few photos.

The next cast another fish took it on the drop and I hooked up almost instantly! This one put up a better fight and almost got me on a pylon. With frayed 6lb leader, I managed to land the fish and it measured in at 35cm! Another solid bream released after a few more photos.

After that fish, the school was spooked so I walked around a bit searching for another school. I ended up on the pontoon getting a bream a cast for 15 minutes, my brother and sister even got onto them! It was the biggest school of bream I have ever seen, it was almost like a salmon school. Ended up getting 10 fish around 25-28cm.
    All fish released.

With a early morning flick down the Onk with no results I came home still thinking fishing and after catching up on a bit of work and doing a few things around the house I thought I'd get stuck into making a few DIY soft plastics, I'd rediscovered the moulds in my shed recently.

Paddle tail and curled tail grub in a few colours. The green one glows in the dark, takes a bit to charge up but does glow pretty well. I'm pretty messy when pouring but just trimmed them up with scissors afterwards and they look ok. Also have a few jig head moulds, the jig heads came out pretty well, I'll be trying those with the paddle tails. I can't wait to have a flick and see how they go
