ASD14 got a reaction from Tinker in What's the worst or funniest fishing session you've had?
I lost a shimano rod and shimano baitrunner of the back of a paddle boat in the torrens lake about 6-7 years ago... me and a mate hired two paddle boats, so we could fish different areas chasing carp! Anyway paddling along and I hear a "ploomp" look back and my rods gone!!

Was an expensive day for a youngster ahaha.

how did you fellas go over the weekend?? i tried half a dozen spots with no luck, ended up coming closer and catching a few XO sized squid... also saw plenty of dolphins smashing a school of either small ST's or garfish.

Still another great day out on the water, was pretty choppy in the morning but flat end right off around 10:30am.

I agree completely, Shimano make some great little threadlines, I own 4 Symetres, and the TLDs are great reels too, but their rods are crap IMO.

yeah daiwa surf rods are great, ive got the seabass and sensor surf and there both really good sticks!

the seabass SB 106M is really hard to beat from a value point of view. Light enough to have some fun, but strong enough to whack out some decent metals.

I've got two main setups. My lightweight rig is a Daiwa Seabass 9'6" paired with a Penn Slammer 260 running 10lb Fireline. It will throw a 20g lure about as far as that sort of weight will go. It's great for when the wind and surf is down. Smaller salmon will put a good bend in it and provide some fun, but I'm certain it will handle much bigger ones(unfortunately I haven't been able to test this theory yet).

My heavier setup is a Daiwa Seajigger 325M with a Slammer 360 and 14lb Fireline. It is an incredibly light and thin rod for the amount of power it produces. It will absolutely launch a 55g metal lure right out the back. It is soft enough to still make salmon in the 30cm bracket fun but it will handle almost any fish you might catch in the surf, including big mullies and snapper. When I bought it I didn't want to spend quite so much, but I'm glad I did, a brilliant beast of a rod.

I cannot recommend Daiwa surf rods enough, I have owned several over the years (one thing to be wary of though is that they seriously overrate the casting weight you can throw well).

Likewise with the Penn Slammer reels, absolutely bulletproof surf reels. They are a bit heavy but I find they balance well on longer beach rods, and they're going cheap right now.

Good luck with your decision bjorn, if you want to meet up for a fish and some test casts let me know.

My setup; Daiwa Seabass SB 96ML, Daiwa SOL II 2508, Daiwa Saltiga Surf 15lb braid. Can spit out light lures (15-30gm) a mile.

My beach sesh turned out to be a no go after waiting all day to hear back from my mate and find out he wanted to give it a miss. So hopefully going to head out early mid week and hit the beach when the weather isn't too bad. I guess this is providing the weather site I'm looking at is actually accurate

I've been using the red Gomoku's in spin with a Diawa 2500 and the overhead with a Daiwa Pluton for whiting where there's a chance of something bigger coming along, otherwise a Shimano Bushy's bait legend "Go to" 6' 3-6kg spin rod with a 2500 daiwa reel for tinny and kayak fishing. I like these because they're all suited to leaving in a rod holder with circle hooks as well as traditional stand and deliver fishing with long shank hooks. I don't mind fishing slightly heavier gear for whiting as it gives me a sporting chance on larger stuff. For whiting, I'd spend a bit less on the rod, because thers plenty of good quality suitable ones off the shelf and lash out on a high end reel.

So I’ve heard many stories of people finding rat kings within a couple of hours from metro in the last six months and never had any thought of chasing them due to not owning the correct gear. However, one close fisho friend of mine gave me some sound info a fortnight ago and gave me motivation to have a go at a landbased king. Not having ever seen one in the wild (plenty in aquaculture) and never having caught one, I went out chasing.

Day began at 5am, left home early and drove up to an area that had frequent sightings of rat sized kings. Armed with a few combos and a couple of not-so-fresh baits, I was hopeful. I began by sending out a freezer squid under a float and let it drift way out off where I was fishing. Whilst that was out the back, I began tossing a squidgy flickbait around on my 1-3kg Samaki Zing and my newly acquired Daiwa Caldia 2004 hoping to nab a few salmon or maybe a snook. After a long while and no hits on plastic, I swapped to a simple paternoster rig hoping to at least catch a fish. Managed to catch typical reef/rock fish such as sweep, zebrafish, wrasse and heaps of leatherjackets in the small size range. I kept periodically checking my whole squid throughout the day but it remained untouched. I swapped out the squid and put on half a garfish just to see how it went. After midday I swapped back to plastics and was rewarded with a solid hookup and strong run. The Caldia was singing loudly and I was losing heaps of line fast. The fish hadn’t jumped so I knew this was no salmon, the Kingies were finally here!! I fought this legal sized fish for five to ten minutes but without a crab net to lift and having completely the wrong gear it was hopeless. The king went for a short run and busted me off on the last pylon. I couldn’t entice another strike from anything until around 4pm when I began to bring in my last half a garfish bait under the float. As I retrieved the float, it began to bloop and pop the garfish across the surface. To my surprise two/three kings came from nowhere and smashed the gar on the surface and things came tight. Against strong drag from the Stradic 5000, it still managed to take line and felt like the harder I pulled, the harder it tried to run away. Eventually I got it close and was able to deadlift it on 40lb leader. Success!!!

My first ever kingie at 70cm. Great fight to it and to do it by myself was awesome. Now I just have to wait until late spring to hopefully go and find some more. Would love to land one on plastics as well, so that’s my first summer goal for next season.

pretty much all pre-tied rigs use monofilament, do you mean fluorocarbon Hoopsy? as fluorocarbon is much more invisible to fish and gives better line sensitivity. cheers.
