I think people don't realise when it's stated that e.g. maximum line rating 15lb printed on the spool and people load it with 20lb braid which snaps at 30lb.then go fishing for big fish, hook up and use the 10kg drag watching that reel work it's guts out and think what a great reel this is.
Then wonder why it didn't last that long

They won't last saltwater fishing, classed as a fresh water reel.

SurfcaztR reacted to saltybeard in Noosa Charters
I was up there in winter a few years ago, and wanted to get out and catch some big blue water fish. Here in Adelaide I catch plenty of snapper  - which is great  - but I was hoping to find something different in Noosa.  After waiting for the wind to drop for a few days I got on a charter on a decent sized cat - with a very exciting bar crossing - and headed out for the day in glassy rolling mountains of swell from multiple directions. Good fun really. Only problem was, we only caught snapper  - all day. Nothing as big as the SA big reds either, mainly around 3-4 kg. Gear used was broomstick type rods with locked up alvey reels and circle hooks.  Hmmm. Not exactly finesse fishing. I was told it was in case we hooked up a big grouper.

Cant remember the charter operators name. Other punters on the boat had a good time, but as a keen fisho, I was left a bit disappointed.

SurfcaztR got a reaction from Bait Caster in 2016 Ci4 +
Apparently they are all getting the same type of sound best described as a "noisy reel" with the end result being it's wearing out. Some replies were to check the line roller bearing but those reels didn't have line on the roller for that being the issue.
I really wanted one of these reels for my flathead lure casting and just disappointed to know that shimano stradics are now a short life reel
    PS..
if i was so impressed having this Ci4+ i would have spent the money on a new one and had 2 of them, but that's not happening now

Haven't fished for them since 7 years ago,if i recall 3/0 circle hook.(could be wrong?)
Bait was suspended about 60-70cm,but i will stress a small light pencil float just enough to float as snook are finicky and any resistance they'll drop the bait. All caught on those calm smooth seas evenings

Always watch others catching them as snook will accumulate in a certain area,so once you know where they are then you can have a crack at them.
We would target then at night with a small chunk of bait exposed hook under a light pencil float

I should add that it was at a darker part of the jetty with a weedy bottom, they didn't seem to get caught anywhere else on that jetty

Try and find anyone who is right handed and winds an overhead with their left hand. There is your answer. And we have bigger fish, pump the rod up with both arms, right hand to spinning reel handle then grind away, repeat.

THe Coriolis effect works on reels too!!!

Actually, I have always held my rod/reel in left hand and wound with my right.  winding with my left hand is really awkward.

SurfcaztR got a reaction from archerfish in How much does it cost to start fishing?
I remember many years ago when talking to a ex retired pro fisherman,he said the two most important pieces of equipment in fishing was the hook and line.
These two things attach you to the fish and they need to be good quality products, and it will always depend on how good your knot is.

The next part is the rod and that will be used to cast and to give you some control in guiding the fish back into the net, plus it acts as a spring relief for the line when under strain.

The last and most least important in all this is the reel, all that does is hold the line and gives you a drag to play the fish.
So as you can see it doesn't cost much in getting started in buying basic gear
If you ask here on this forum who's got what laying around not being used anymore i'm sure you'll buy something usable and affordable within a low starting budget.

SurfcaztR reacted to doobie in Monday Port Noarlunga adventure for Salmon
My Monday adventure starts off from Sunday nights weather forecast of 22C and moderate Northerly winds – more wind than I like !!  However, on waking this morning and looking out the window there was not a breeze of air – weather forecasters get it wrong again, but good for me.

So during the night, I am kept awake assessing the plan for the fishing day.  I was contemplating going to Waits/Parsons but also maybe hitting up Southport.  In the end I couldn’t be bothered going all the way to Waits/Parsons  â€“ sort of ‘over the area’ at the moment.

So Southport it is, (not knowing that the day would bring a torn stitching from the clip in my waders, a treble hook becoming a single hook and 2 lost lures) .  The webcam shows lovely conditions so parked the car and off by 9.30am.

Once I arrived near Southport I noticed an Australian Flag in someone’s yard that was blowing with all its glory – yes, there was a Northerly more than my home surrounds had indicated – but once on the beach it was not so bad.

River mouth was not looking very clean (but looked great by the end of the day)

I parked South of the Pt Noarlunga surf club and strolled down to the water edge and lured towards the jetty first of.
Not much there so turned around and headed towards Southport.  It was uneventful with no fish as yet, but I need to remember to always check that the reel bail is opened before I cast !!
    First lure sent flying.

So set up with my Mr Reliable.

Just before the Surf club I received a hit and a nice just under 1kg / 37cm Salmon was proudly in the bag.  A few casts and 2 decent sized ST’s about 27cm to go with it.  Another cast saw my rod bend nicely but a lost ‘Salmon’ in the shallows was the result.

But I now notice that my Mr Reliable lure has a single hook instead of the treble hook.  Did the lost fish break it off?  So a quick lure change but nothing more happens.

Down to the mouth for no more hits and then a slow walk back towards the jetty.

As no other fish hit the lure it was time for lunch – and I had packed a nice gourmet lunch at that.

Gourmet multigrain bread with vegemite, a 2016 bottle of Adelaide tap water and 2 homegrown mandarins.  A well deserved luncheon.

Whilst eating my lunch I am continually scanning the water for any passing shadows, but none where forth coming.

I now decided to take a treble hook from another lure on put it on Mr Reliable and attaching the left over single hook at the lure nose.

So back to the water and repeating the same as in the morning.  Lure towards the jetty and then turn and head towards Southport.

When near the jetty I noticed a guy with rod in hand walking along the jetty towards the shallows and dragging a fish along the water. Obviously a heavy fish as he didn’t want to pull it up.  Once near the shallows I offered my help to drag his line on to the beach.  He had caught a Port Jackson shark.

After my help, off to Southport again but no action at all.  By the time I got to Southport there were half a dozen fishos in the area but no-one seemed to be catching anything especially as it was near high tide now.

I positioned myself just North of the surf club and starting getting good hits and was retrieving some good fish weight. Five lost fish was the result. For some reason they were not staying hooked and they just threw the hook close to shore.

Then I was devastated.  On retrieving a cast the line went soft!  My Mr Reliable had come off.  The swivel had opened up and the lure had dropped off – what am I going to do now without Mr Reliable

    RIP Mr Reliable

So a change of lure, and by now it is 4.30 so headed back towards the jetty to head home.

So a long day in the area for a few fish but well worth it being outdoors and wetting the line.

Tomorrow I off to get more lures !!!

Ps: anyone know best way of stitching strap back onto waders?

    Here's a little video I put together.

That's a very good point, I struggled with that when I first started targeting them. But once you land a few, you will feel more confident and persistent. Always worth the reward when you catch one, nonetheless.
