Has anyone ever seen a salmon school line up like travelling ants as opposed to the usual round/oval school of fish?

Hi, for those that are fishing the site known as the Cape Jaffa in the Gulf - I have compiled a video, telling the story of it.Built in 1951 in a back yard shed in Kingston SE, and sinking in 1973 - of the vicinity of Carrickalinga in some 27 metres of water - This short video tells of the boat's working life and ownerships. It provides a bit of insight of the vessel, and what you are fishing on.I hope you enjoy.Safe fishing on the water, and hope you all have a bumper season.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3fsjklwuZw

Agree, you shouldnt die, but it may be a slow trip depending on how comfy you want to be during the journey. Not to mention the bouncing around whilst trying to fish. Then you have the predicted showers and always the chance of a mechanical failure meaning a long wait and a slow tow back in crappy conditions on a day where you may be the only trailer at the ramp .But hey, you may get a bag of good fish, boat doesnt miss a beat and a trip home after lunch in slowing winds may end up a high five moment!!Be sure to post back tho!!

because other states have very different marine environments and fish stocks to SA perhaps?as far as I can see, our gulfs are fairly unique. The science seems fairly legit to me, especially for snapper. having more reefs is not going to increase numbers, just aggregate fish in know locations which will then increase fishing pressure. The snapper have a yearly run from way out in the open ocean somewhere, up the gulfs, they spawn, then bugger off back out into the deep blue yonder. they are migratory... so how are more reefs going to help anything? its not going to help them get jiggy with it... they do that up in the warm gulf waters. that's the reason why there are snapper bans each year and they are bringing in the spatial closures in their breeding areas... so they are left alone to get down and dirty. That is going to do a lot more for recs than putting in reefs, more breeding, more fish, the easier it will be for you to catch one at any of the many reefs and structures already in place.I think their science is pretty damn good.also, FADs attract pelagics... how many pelagic species do we see in SA where the majority of people fish (the gulfs)? trevors... slimey macks... The page you linked to will tell you that this state has installed many artificial reefs in the 1970s, if that didn't increase fish stocks significantly then how will putting more in help? the only thing it will do is give more people a 'fishing spot' when there are already more than enough.

Ok, Il take your bait: Id like to see the science behind your logic, cos even tho that science is 20 years old, doesnt make it redundant in my books. Plenty of science is "old" yet still applicable to this day.Would I be right in assuming that alot of the artificals and FADs in other states are funded by licence revenue? Revenue that is controlled by organizations that are run by recs and in self interest will do anything that they believe will be of help to their cause? PIRSA are a government body, looking after the intrest of more parties than just us recs.If your logic was full proof, I should be able to rock up to any wreck or tyre reef in the gulf ( considering we have more than in an other state) and be in with a good chance of getting a feed, its simply not the case.why is it that everybody wants there own "drop"? Is it cos the fish dont have enough structure to adhere to , or is it cos all the common ones have so many recs thrash them that there is no fish anyway?chicken/egg scenario to me!!

Just been reading some of the thumper KG threads in this section & thought I'd share these.Fishie mentions in another thread the power hauling and netting that used to occur on the Stansbury Spit. For years all you could get inside the spit were undersized KGW, waste of time fishing there if you were after KGs. These 2 were caught back in early December, inside the spit in less than 3 metres of water. Both were caught using 6lb braid with 10lb mono trace and size 4 circles. Biggest (caught by the fair one) went 56cm, mine went 51cm. :woohoo: Dropped a similar size one at the boat the next day. Going back in a couple of weeks so fingers crossed.Cheers Wahoo

Ok , so on Wed smoko i got a call from my old boss asking "you doing much tomoz ? Thinking of going on a fishing charter , would you like to come ?" . My instant reply "is a ducks a@#$ water tight" . It was predicted to be 41 deg anyway so i wasn't to keen to work doing some roofing , not that i needed an excuse like this to take the day of . Got a call a bit later saying it was on and to be ready by 4:15am . Mark was at my door on time and we headed of on an adventure . We were down at Cape Jervois to meet the charter on time and head out before the birds were chirping and wouldn't you know it , the charter fella was a tad late . Makes a change as Mark usually drives Miss Daisy and we are late ? On board and loaded up we headed out through Backstairs Passage towards the Pages and it wasn't long before we could see the birds bombing the water . Motored towards them and we got close enough to see the Tuna breaching out the surface smashing the bait . What a sensational sight . "To small" cries the skipper and we cruise past heading further out into the big blue . After what seems like an eternity , a few more to small cries and barely seeing land the skipper is telling us to put our line's out . Not to long into the trawl and my rod buckles over and i am onto my first Tuna . After a shortish battle and getting to see colour the hooks pulled with the fish about 5-10 meter's below the boat . Bugger . Off Trawling again and before i could turn the camera on there was a double hookup with one of the rods being mine . A bit of pandemonium and a little bit of underwater footage two Tuna are on board with me landing my first ever Tuna . A bit more of a trawl this time but again i couldn't get the camera on while i was onto another Tuna . Now by this time i hung my rod up to let other people on board to catch a Tuna them selves and be fair but then i was thinking of the other times i had been on charters and didn't even catch a fish because other people had got the boat limit before i really had even had a crack so this time i thought bugger it and after some one had been busted off a couple of times had landed one them selve and was still trying to catch a fish every time we did a pass i had a crack again . This time i got the hook up on camera but a minute or so in to the epic battle , the bloody battery went flat . This time tho the braid had some fray in it so the skipper told me not to put to much drag on this fish and take my time . 10-15 minutes later i had it on board ? This one was also my biggest fish for the day . Awesome stuff . Once the boat limit was reached we headed closer to shore to have a crack for some Snapper . Managed to get a few 45-50cm models but then we caught 3 eagle rays and the skipper decided to call it a day and we headed back to port . Cant thank Lands End Pro Charters enough for the epic adventure chasing Tuna and what an awesome and spectacular day . Cheers fellas .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2J2AdEoJ8jwCouple of bits i need to re edit on this ?

Just a warning guys, that there has been a lot of car break ins at the ramp last two weeks, 3 cars last night and not sure on how many last Thursday but was a few also! It's been the cars that have been there overnight getting done, smashed windows , ransacked etc...... Bloody c@&k heads! Why do this ? Hope they get caught. Maybe for this busy period security should be provided, this has been going on for two weeks now and nutting has been done! Surely cop cars every half to and hour doin a patrol is NOT unreasonable is it???? One guy had his two baby seats in the back of the car with smashed glass all over them, felt so sorry for the bloke as he may have to replace them as well if cant be cleaned on top of stolen items, smashed glass etc! Hope the people get hit by a truck actually , if they get caught they prob just do it again!!!!Sorry for the bad news guys. Cheers !

Was met at the ramp at 5:30 am by my mate and 6 or so other boats parked up in the rigging area. Both my mates and my boats could be best described as "Estuary" type boats and with a reasonable chop your gonna get wet. After initially wanting to bail I decided to push out but vowed if I got 1 wave over the bow of my boat I was turning around. What would normally be about a 10min run took about 30min but I took it real easy. The minn Kota was deployed and "Spot Lock" engaged and we were away. The boat handled the swell/chop well considering. After making a few Jighead weight adjustments I had a good snapper on board measuring 76•5 cm and weighing 5kg.With that it was a slow cruise in and homeski.

If you retrieve with the vehicle still hitched to the trailer always switch off your motor as the vibration will make your vehicle and trailer sink further into the sand. Always pullout with the vehicle at an angle and not drive straight out. Ale has the best advice about winching the bow hard into the trailer

I had it down to a fine art with my oldboat, admitingly smaller (but fibreglass). You've obviously sussed the launch, so here is my retrieval:Firstly ,no, dont get the car wet, always leave have it on the firm sand ( plentiful at alding unless a very big tide)come in and totaly beach the boat, so the bow is on sand and the transom barely in water, the motor all the way up. Get out to get your car, back up, once close,( but not wet ) unhitch the trailer and wheel it so the first roller is hard up against the hull. ( I nice big ipnuematic jockey wheel helps a lot)Hitch attached, start winching the trailer UNDER the hull. You may have the front of the trailer head for the sky, just be carefull it doesnt crack ya in the head na dkeep winding. Depending on boat weight and your fitness, you may need to take it in turns on the winch with a mate. Once the boat is on the trailer, strong rope onto the trailer A frame, other end on tow ball, and as your mate holds the jockey wheel up out of the sand you drive forward. This is when it gets tricky, the trailer wheels will be burried in the sand, depending on weight, softness of sand and how long its taken you as to how deep. A good trick is to have the car at a slight angle to the trailer, so you are pulling slightly from the side and only un burriying one wheel at a time. Once on dry, firm sand, reverse car back to the trailer, hitch it and your done

I don't really want to start a 'war' by posting either but I've gotta put my opinion on the table on this topic as well.I understand the community concerns that it can be perceived as dangerous but I'd argue that the 100+ years of shark fishing history off the Adelaide metro coastline entirely negates any concerns of apparent danger. If it is as dangerous as people claim then why have we seen zero shark attacks which are directly attributable to people fishing for sharks?? In 100+ years? I've struggled to even find one incident in any state in Australia. This should put to rest any fears anyone has about fishing related shark attacks in Australia. Reading this shows that almost every attack is related to either surfing' date=' diving or snorkelling and usually well away from non-surf beaches and beaches lacking reef structure. I also note that we haven't banned any of those activities.I hardly think a Bronzie with a hook in his mouth is in any position to think about what's he's having for lunch. Since most sharks are opportunistic feeders, it stands to reason that they would take a fresh dead bait presented by an angler [i']before taking a human as it represents a much easier feed for a shark. The simple realities of the situation are that the sharks are already in the water with the swimmers. Fishing for them does not attract them nor make them more likely to attack a person. History has proven this to be the case beyond all reasonable doubt.Yes it does happen to be the law now but from my point of view it's a law which is not backed by any evidence or science and it has been put in place simply because of the perceived danger, which is not really good enough IMO. There's a perceived danger that I might get attacked by a dog on the way home, but we haven't banned all dog ownership. Maybe we should, considering there were 6000 dog attacks between 2001 - 2003 alone which required hospitalization. More than seven times the total amount of shark attacks ever recorded in Australia.

Can their "Science" explain why the majority of local KGW and rugger snapper have been caught inside and along the blue line right along the Metro Coastline.. In the last couple of years the fish seem to be migrating in very shallow water as opposed to out along the deeper seagrass meadows... even reports on this site will confirm this with reports of snapper and whiting taken from our local jetties and not to mention the posts from our regular kayak fishers who seem to do pretty well in the shallows... same for Port Noarlunga Reef... we're still taking good fish from that line of structure.

Ok, I've read both the provided links, but I'm really not sure what you're trying to tell me.The first link never explained my question of whether the silt contains nitrogen, or is harmless to the environment. The second link you provided discusses how Penrice ONCE was the second largest mains water consumer at 7.5 gig (prior to 2006), but have now reduced their water consumption by 90% through installing RO and now recycling used water. Is this bad, or are you now concerned because they installed their own reverse osmosis plant in 2006 to reduce mains water consumption and you believe this is going to destroy the port river environment? From what I see, Penrice have been attempting to clean up their act for a number of years now. They employ over 300 people, export to 27 countries, put over $150M into the economy, have been around since 1936, and are now making large investments to clean up their act. The alternative is for us to go without glass, lime, baking soda, detergent, pharmaceuticals, stockfeed, etc..............and instead be purchasing overseas product while yet another Aust company shuts down. I dont see purchasing glass and stockfeeds from overseas as a viable option. We want jobs, we want Australian made, we want dollars into the economy. We complain about foreign products flooding our country, we talk of export, resources and national wealth...............we don't get to have everything! What is it that we actually want? Is it that we want the soda ash, we want the jobs, we want the money, we want the glass, we want the other products manufactured here from this soda ash, but we dont want water usage in the process?I'm as pro environment as the next person, but I think we also have to be realistic in the process.....I don't see Penrice as the enemy anymore, and as long as they continue pumping dollars into procedural improvement, I dont see any reason to go on the defence against them............am I wrong in this?
