A good call about fresh water - I remember making a mistake while camping at the beach. I got my hair wet and rubbed a block of soap all through my hair, to wash out a weeks worth of slimy fish hands running through it.

That day I learnt that alot of soaps dont lather or dissolve in salt water😉

    I don’t pay over $2 a jig

im not what you’d describe as a serious squid fisherman

my cheapies have no problem penetrating squid flesh. A jigs effectiveness seems entirely based on who’s line it’s tied to in my limited experience.

3 blokes using the exact same $2 jig. 1 guy gets none - 1 guy gets 3 - and the last guy gets 8 over the same time casting at the same water.

so the guy who got none will go out and buy $20 jigs the next week because the $2 dont work. And he will get better over time and start attributing the suckers to the new jigs.

But the guy who got 8 about as quick as you can catch squid can stick with $2 jigs because it would be harder to catch squid faster than he already catches them

I was always a user of cheaper jigs. But over time I've bought a few better ones just to see if I was missing something. Apart from build quality, the expensive ones do swim a bit better and don't get snagged as much as they are better balanced.
Then I thought I'd look closer at the barbs. I'll let you decide from the pics below. All are the same magnification 132x, some focussed a bit better than others, and some measuring lines just for a bit of reference.
First up, Duel Dartmaster EZ-Q Search #3.0

Next is Shimano Flash Boost (poor focus sorry)

Then for a bit of difference, a Ebay cheapie

Daiwa - the one with a bit of opal in the back

Neptune Tackle cheapie - well used I think

    Aliexpress real fish type

Aliexpress bibbed minnow swim type, pointy but soft steel (next 2 pics)

We get screwed in Australia with jig prices, very tempting to go cheap, but if you do they will likely need a touch up with a diamond file.

Thanks Rybak - Ive got a 10litre bucket that will be perfect for hand washing and ruler dipping👍

My mates get a bit weird about me cluttering up the deck with all my contraptions - and Ive always wanted to include a bucket full of water for washing hands - but if I can convince them its absolutely necessary for fish care  - I reckon that will get it approved👍

    Hi all...
I went out for a cast.. First for the season.
Walked the outgoing and incoming left as the wind came in.. Got cold.
Went to a spot I know.. Found where they were.. Only fired up when the sun came out.. as the clouds builded they stopped.. I kept moving/exploring.. about 7ks
They were there in small numbers but very sluggish, wouldnt really commit, all nice sizes which is usual first start of the season. Managed to get 2, 39/36.. nice and golden, fat and heavy.. Beautiful fish.
Lost 3 due to floating weed/stuffing around setting drag, lost a very nice and heavy one. Got it close though.. It was big... Drag was too tight and got all tangled up in the only bit of floating cork weed about, pulled the hooks and was the first fish too! Wasnt happy..
Took everything I new to get them.. They would follow but not commit.. Was frustrating but I know they are starting to fire up.. need some HOT days...Were very active before lunch as the sun was shinning and it was warm.. died off when it cooled down.
Lots of salmon trout, Mullet were every were, bloody pain.. Seen heaps of gar in the shallows as well... Only seen 1 keeper crab but lots of small ones.. Water wasnt too warm.. but getting there.. not much floating weed.. Was a nice way to start the season..
Oh! lost 2 lures.. Bloody wind knots.. It was and old trusty and the other was a new funny one, it worked very well got 2 fish! Always happens with new lures and when I spool new line.. Oh well.. excuse to buy more.. Took 3 spare spools and used 2.. Happy with the new line.. Casted well after it settled down.
    Mike

    DODGE TIDES … YOU BEAUTY!

Many Yellow Fin Whiting fishers complain about Dodge tides. They find it difficult to catch fish during a dodge.
I feel the dodge tides present an opportunity to easily catch fish.

Dodge tides are small and always with a higher water height at low tide. They do not spread the fish out far and wide across the sand flats. The fish are held in a concentrated area for a prolonged spell. Most often the fish will be congregate on the lower food rich sand flats. On nipper and worm rich flats nearer to the weed lines. The experienced YFW fisher who has previously worked the same spots, having previously followed normal tides out and back in, will know the terrain and exactly where to go at their regular spots.

At times on a dodge the YFW may seem lethargic and uninterested in your offering. YFW are stimulated to feed by water movement. And normally there is little movement on a dodge tide. However the movement and stimulation can be provided by a variety of other small factors.

In the SA Gulfs the tide is amplified the further north you go. So a small tide movement is a bit larger if you chose a location further north in the gulf. The lay of the land, channels, weed beds, etc can accentuate what little movement there is. So fish those spots of slightly greater water flow. Like a sand flat near the opening of a channel that will experience any small water movement from that channel draining or filling.

Wind always stimulates feeding in YFW. And even more so on a dodge. Check the forecasts and fish a time when the wind picks up. Late afternoons are good. A strong sea breeze creates a wind tide, with enough movement to stimulate feeding on these otherwise listless “Dodgy days”.  In cooler weather periods, it is the smaller water body of a dodge tide that will warm up quicker. So dodge tides actually present some opportunities.

I had a good recent session on a dodge tide. One of frequent good dodge tide sessions. On this day, I started fishing at the bottom of the tide, early in the afternoon. The low tide was at the higher level of 1.00mt. The next high was small and about 12 hours away. There was going to be very little natural tidal movement. However the wind was predicted to turn SW and pick up on this arvo. Given that the opening to our Gulfs face SW,  SW winds in or gulfs always produce a higher tide. And do produce a wind tide. At the bottom of the tide, I was positioned to benefit from any movement. I worked an area of sand flats adjacent the weed line which had a number of channel openings in it.

Any water movement was going to be felt here. Fish were lingering around the area from the start. Lazily cruising around in the extra pools of low tide water that the dodge holds. They took some coaxing at first. But as the wind picked up, they certainly got a lot more aggressive. The water movement was noticeable even if a bit slow, if compared to a regular tide.

There was no need for small lures and timid fishing, with the stiffening breeze. The Sugapen 95 did most of the damage on this day.

Late in the session it got a bit too choppy. A switch to sub surface with the Ecogear ZX caught the last few fish. There were some very solid fish at around 40cm in the catch.

It finished up being a very satisfying day going to plan.

    Cheers, Des

yellow door 1 reacted to David_C in Changes made to recreational fishing in Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary
Public consultation on recreational fishing in the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary (ADS) is now open, with temporary measures in place to strike a balance between recreational fishing access and enhancing the protection of dolphins whilst the public consultation is undertaken to inform longer-term arrangements.

The Port River and Barker Inlet region, and wider ADS region, is a popular recreational fishing area that is readily accessed by land and boat.

From October 1, a temporary four-month arrangement will be in place under Section 79 of the Fisheries Management Act 2007 that will require recreational fishers to bring in their hand line, rod and line or teaser line if they are within 50 metres of a visible dolphin within the sanctuary.

This reasonable approach reflects the concerns for dolphins in the ADS, particularly during the coming months where larger recreationally targeted species such as Kingfish and Mulloway may be present, while ensuring that recreational fishers have access to these waters as they do now with a greater awareness regarding the Port River dolphins.
Clare Scriven, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, says “These temporary arrangements achieve a balance between greater awareness and protection of dolphins within the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, while ensuring recreational fishers still have the same access to the area and popular fish species while permanent arrangements are explored through consultation on the ADS options paper.
Following a review and initial consultation with stakeholders by the Government of South Australia, a discussion paper has been released, exploring the suitability of recreational fishing regulations in the area with respect to potential interactions with dolphins.

The options being considered may assist in mitigating dolphin interactions with recreational fishing gear and baits in the ADS. These options include:
No change to recreational fishing regulations, but a targeted education and awareness initiative be undertaken. Spatial (relating to particular areas) restrictions on the use of heavy fishing gear (large hook sizes and capacity of fishing line) for recreational fishing in the ADS. Spatial (relating to particular areas) and temporal (relating to particular times) restrictions on the use of heavy fishing gear (large hook sizes and capacity of fishing line) for recreational fishing in the ADS. Public consultation will be open for four weeks and will close on Friday 28 October, 2022. Anyone with an interest in recreational fishing and the ADS is invited to have their say.
Minister for Environment, Susan Close, says “The Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary was established for the protection of local bottlenose dolphins. It is one of only a few places in the world where a wild dolphin population lives close to an urban centre.
“This consultation will be a key part of ensuring the dolphins living in the sanctuary are protected, while the other users of the ADS have appropriate access.”

I went down the replace with carbontex route -  but I'd already done way too much damage to save my lightly built diawa freams

0.5mm sheet of carbontex was recommended to me for my 3000 freams - the little black rectangle on the left was about $20 - just be very particular about cutting out your disks - I tried to just get it done quick and wasted a bit of the sheet due to not staying inside the lines😉

Sorry I cant be of more assistance as I only got half way through the fix before realising my reel was too far gone

I'm with @Kuerschie my standard is 4lb and 2-3 rod lengths depending on water clarity. Clear = more, dirty = less.
I wouldn't over think it thought, heaps of people run a single rod length and brain them. If you run more than a single rod length your leader knot will be on your spool, so suggest learning the FG if you want to go down the path of >1 rod length.

I started at a rod length of 4lb leader with bream and went up to 2 or even 3 lengths in the last 2-3 years. Can’t say for sure if it made catches go up or just better lure technique learned over time. But I will say that it made my confidence go up a little bit and that can only be a good thing. I run 4lb fluoro. Savage Gear, Black Magic, Sunline FC Rock all have done me well.
You’re probably not doing much wrong, it’s just that bream can be fickle at times and just need to persist.
