Dave061 got a reaction from Meppstas in what to pack when going to outer harbour breackwater
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but seeing it wasn't closed, thought I add my 2 cents.
Back in the 70's and early 80's we'd venture to the OH breakwater a couple of times year. Always in daylight. Night, lol, was too much like playing Russian roulette with the devil.
Aside from mulloway and snapper, if you were lucky, you'd hook up some decent size King Gorge Whiting too. Though, to be fair, in those days, fish were aplenty, locally.
Unless the breakwater has undergone repairs since, rock hopping was definitely a task you had to take care at.  The snail win the race on this one, that's for sure.

The other thing, not sure if it's still a problem, but there was a vermin (rat) issue. Some where the size of small cats, and not scared to have a got at you, if you cross paths with them. Hence a good pair of solid boots, with a well gripping sole, and even steel caps wont go astray. Especially if those rats are still inhabiting the rocks.

    Agreed.

Just getting back into the hobby, after years of absence. Hit BCF, thinking they'd be able to give help/advice on gear etc., needed. Probably OK if you know what you need but not great with the knowledge Dept. Later, found an Indy tackle shop. Well stocked, helpful and very knowledgeable. Guess who's getting my business

@yellow door 1 brilliant tip. The eyes aren't what they used to be, and seeing double isn't fun. Thanks for adding this

This is the rig I used for beach fishing for Mulloway at Middleton, baits were strips of squid, squid heads, pilchards, small whole mullet, salmon trout & even salmon & mullets fillets because they're an oily fish..
    cheers

While BCF and Anaconda have got the range they still aren't cheap when the sales are on.
I wanted a Shimano Sedona this week and seen them for $99 normally $124.99.
Ordered direct from overseas and is delivered to my door for $70.Not a huge saving but the gear i go through every year every bit helps to save me something,as for warranty that's virtually non existent these days.

Don't mean to dig up an ancient thread, but seemed fitting to add comment, given, the fishing spot is on topic.

Back in the 70's (circa 1974), Dad and I stumbled across a dilapidated boat-builders jetty, in the port river (diagonally across from the power station). Was late afternoon June/July. The wooden pylons were still solid, but most of the decking had gone south. So you had to be careful where you walked or you'd end up in the drink.  We were heading home, but decided to give it a go for 20 min or so.  Within minutes of dropping lines, we've hooked up.  We fished until dusk, by then, we'd filled the bucket with a couple of decent feeds.

Bream heaven is the best description.  It was our regular fishing spot from them on wards. 3lb (1.3kg) were the norm, we'd hooked a few monsters too.   Unfortunately, all good things seem to come to an end. About 12 months in, we turned up to find the jetty fenced up, and being rebuilt. The end result, a solid concrete jetty. Sadly the bream were no longer there.

Took a look at Google maps the other day, but it's no longer there. Here's where it was.

Unfortunately, about 30 years ago we started paying ferals to breed.  Not surprisingly, they did.  This is just one of the many, many undesirable consequences.

Definitely err on the side of caution, there are some real nutters out there.
@Yorky The scenario you've outlined, shows the kind of person who wouldn't give two hoots about laws and rules.
We can still make a difference without having to go full badge and uniform on people.

Not necessarily the cowards way, maybe the smart way. I don't do a lot of jetty fishing because I don't have the patience, and I don't meant patience for fishing, I mean patience for some of the morons that you see up there.
If you are going to approach these thieving bastards in an effort to educate just be careful, I have heard stories from quite a few that have spoken to people doing the wrong thing and they have copped abuse, been threatened (one was told they will go looking for his family), knife pulled, full blown arguments.
If you approach them and are told to F*** off you are better off walking away unless you are prepared for the possibility of the above consequences. Some of these people know what they are doing is wrong and don't want to be told about it.
I'm not saying don't say anything, just be careful
    Cheers

    Interesting topic.
    This ^^^
People learn through consequence, plain and simple. You either educate people so they know the consequence ahead of time, by learning from others' mistakes, or you let them experience it 1st hand.
The only way any of the above is possible is with appropriate resourcing, which costs money. Licences would provide money for greater education and more fisheries officers to enforce it.
With time, greater resourcing would see a shift in mindsets.
