Follow up on Gliss. I've still got it on 1 reel. Abrasion resistance got really bad over time to the point of constant breakages.

It looks like most people have found the same and it is going really cheap.
WFT Gliss Hybrid Line 150m Yellow Bulk - DINGA Online — DINGA Fishing
At $3 a spool I am still giving it a miss.

From a boat casting is not as important. I value lightness so you can hold it all day, a soft tip so it will show bites but enough backbone to handle any bigger fish. I use a few high end rods for specific uses but mostly prefer mid range gear these days. I really like the gomoku rods for boat fishing for whiting as they tick all of these boxes.
For landbased bait fishing for whiting it is a balance between length for casting distance and lightness. I use a pair of Daiwa seajiggers for most of my jetty work.
For extreme distance I have pair of SFC Surf Tiger rods and a pair of Century TTUL ST. Matched to a pair of Daiwa Surf Basia reels these will cast over 100m easily.
For lure fishing I am lucky enough to own a Black Diamond Flats Ranger 1 to 3kg rod that works great for small hardbodies and plastics. Although I mainly use it for baitfishing from the Yak.

Monday night I decided to head out for a fish, so I packed my squid outfit and a soft plastics outfit for some tommies. I packed it into my bicycle bags and headed off to Glenelg jetty. Got to Glenelg about 7pm and fished for squid till last light, then switched over to soft plastics for tommies. No joy with the squid but plenty of tommies about for a feed and to stock up on bait for crab nets.
The jetty was pretty empty with only two other people, which was surprising because the conditions were excellent. Then about 10.30pm the wind started to pick up with increasingly strong gusts. Just after 11pm a really big gust came through and I turned to see my bicycle being blown over. All my gear was secure in the bike bags, except my box of squid jigs, which went over the edge of the jetty. There was no moon, so quite dark but with a torch I could see the box of jigs partially floating and heading out to see. Well, 10 quality jigs and the lure box sinking to the bottom was not something I was happy about, and I quickly said to myself "F*** it!", stripped off to my boxer shorts, climbed the railing and took the plunge into the inky brine. One of the other fishos shone a torch on the lure box and I swam out to get it, then back along the jetty and underneath to the opposite side to climb the ladder.
By this stage my heart my heart was pounding pretty hard, not from jumping in (I was a regular jetty jumper as a kid), not from the swim, but from the thoughts racing through my head. With no moon, it was bloody dark down in the water and the fear of the unknown lurking below certainly put me on edge as I swam back to the ladder.
Would I do it again? F*** yeah! I'm not letting $150+ of jigs and lure box get away that easy.

I had a small bottle of tuna oil in a fishing backpack once. It spilled.
I couldn't get the oil out even after a few washes in the washing machine. Had to throw it out in the end.

I was today years old before realising rod holders can be used back wards and forwards

Handy for rigging up and changing baits or when you need your rod pointing north.

The pic below shows a very vertical position but a slight lean will make it more stable

Hard work fishing land based. The first km or two of shoreline is really shallow and weedy. From the yak I go to a long thin 3inch soft plastic and slow drift with the lure just above bottom.
Another option is to use a shallow diving hardbody minnow and fish over the top of the weeds. This only works when the fish move in shallow when the water warms more.

Ive also wondered if pureeing mussels flesh and using it as a marinade on precut chicken pieces would be a good idea

I used to make lure scents from blended mussel, oil and salt - but never tried it on baits.

I also remember watching a guy on King Island useing cotton wool dipped in the yellow un cooked gunk, inside of a cray fishes head as bait - and he was smashing the trevally on it. So anything can be made tasty if it has the right marinade😉

I use bait elastic with pilchard and garfish baits when casting from shore. Haven't tried it with yabbies, but alot of people overseas use it for soft baits like clams, prawn and squid so it should work fine.

I've found its more of an issue with the 2 long feeding tentacles. Couple of rinses in water gets rid of most of the hard bits and a good fry till crunchy sorts out the rest.
