Tried a tiny stream around the Lobey area this morning. The wheather was pretty average. only 11 degrees in the hills, wasn't expecting much activity.
A bow n arrow cast into a murky twig infected hole and this juvenile could not resist.
simple grub i tied years ago.
Spotted this guy high on a bank, snuck behind him and made a short cast
Trecked a few km's, with hardly any sightings.. Overall a quiet morning. When i arrived back in the Barossa it was 18 degrees and the sun was shining..

Well I finally caught my 10.000th Tasmanian wild trout since we moved here back in March 2000..  it's a milestone I never gave a thought to until the start of this trout season when I was going through my end of season reports when I noticed I only needed 129 trout to reach 10,000 trout here in Tassie.. So yesterday and only needing another seven trout I reached it, actually caught & released fourteen all up..
    cheers

I fish those spots a bit, still catch the same species though never a legal sized whiting. but salmon trout fishing is still good and you get the odd flathead, bream trevally tommies gar puffers and cow fish
Haven't been down there since the dredging started though

Well, thought it was time to go through the hundreds of photos I've taken during the 2018/19 trout season and make up another photo book.. With so many to pick from hopefully I've picked out some of the best, thought there were plenty of others that I still would have liked to have used but had to draw the line somewhere.  As it was this book has 98 pages to it and I'm reasonably satisfied with how it came out.. so here's a few photos of the book..           This is my 16th book I've made so far of which two have gone to France & two to Goowla..   Only 5 weeks to the start of the next season.. 3rd August.. Yippeeeee!!!!
    cheers

I'm sure that polluted storm water run off has had a big impact as does the daily millions of liters of water from the treatment plant, sea grass is now thinly spread along the coast and way out from where it used to be.. I can remember fishing the Semaphore & Larges jetties when the sea grass was well in close to shore and only the first third of the jetty had sand under it.  Used to cast into the sand patches and catch KGW on every trip..  Now it's all sand for the length of both jetties..
    cheers

Yeah the photo above is a bit misleading. It shows the head taken off but they quite often come back with the head still on - but crushed - I'll try to find some photos of the crushed heads

When we used to fish the bays alot, we'd get a fair few squid taking livies - but a squid take is much more "Lungey" than these clunking "Head Crushers" - Squid also often leave a semi circular bight on the shoulder right near the head.  These takes are weird - it just one clunk - then they leave it alone - there are no follow up nudges or nibbles

These "Head crushers" live in the rivers around Melbourne - but because they are estuarine, with big changes in salinity levels, its hard to ID them because there's so many options.

Deep down I think they might be eels - but I have no proof

If you’re looking for something mid tier just to get the job done and be reliable, I would highly recommend the Shimano raider rods, either in the rack or bream model in line class 1-3kg and a sienna 1000/2000/2500 reel. This combo will be more than adequate for many years of fishing and well within your budget.

I use a small (size 10 I think) circle hook, these are deadly in the surf as the bait is moving slightly with the swell and the hook up rate is near 100%. I tend to use gents or cockles in the close gutters at waitpinga etc. as mentioned patternosta and running sinker rig works well or a float. Size 10 long shanks hooks are good when using worms or prawn

it may be the tow eye is slightly cocked to one side if the lure is spinning clockwise try pulling the eye to left ever so gently & with a very minisule adjustment with a small pair of pliers retry lure & the reverse if the lure is spinning anticlockwise. also i would tie a loop knot rather than a blood knot it gives the lure a little more freedom of movement thru the water.

Any decent seafood resturants use weights. Alot of fish will curl. When i cook any fish weather it be whitting or garfish il use a saucepan lid and push hard on the fish skin down. Creating contact with the skin and pan. Crispy skin. No curling.

Freshwater flows out of the Murray are migration cues for mulloway, they used to be caught up in Milang until the barrages were put in and changed the environment in the lakes

mrfish reacted to Aff in NZ Snapper Industry
    Hi all,
I was watching a new fishing show on the TV on Sunday, I think it was called 'Fish of the Day', and the host was saying that in NZ recreational fishing connected to snapper species provides around $88/kg (of the fish) to the country's economy. This would take in tourism connected with fishing, charters,tackle/bait sold etc. I'm assuming.
Compared to $9/kg of snapper that the commercial catch contributes to the NZ local economy. Of which 70% is estimated to be shipped off overseas.
I know stats can be presented in ways to support a particular position, but those two numbers really jump right out at you. I wonder if there are similarities in Australia's fisheries?  If there is, you've really got ask if we're getting the most out of our fish stocks given the current priorities and approaches to fish management?
I found this information interesting anyway thought I'd pass it on.

Yeah thats one of the things I love about- when the little snapper and flatties are tearing pilchards to shreds - you know those carp fillets will survive the onslaught
