keenfisho reacted to Fishingmad in Onkaparinga Bream Session
headed down to my second home yesterday (the onk) and decided to target some bream. Arrived around 3 o'clock and bites were slow at first as per usual but managed a few small bream and a 35cm st. Once the light started getting low and the tide came up it was on! consistent bream of around 30cm every cast antil bang the baitrunner is screaming with a good fish which measured in at 36cm. Next cast and again the baitrunner was hit and this fish was solid. eventually got it in and it was a very fat and healthy 40cm bream. My third from the onk and was stoked! After that i had to leave them biting... Was a good session with all fish being released

keenfisho reacted to bjorn2fish in Let's help get some funding for fishers!!!
The Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club (LMLFC) would like to educate local youth and their families on how to fish in the river Murray and care for this environment and its native inhabitants but funding would really help this even go a long way.

So everyone please follow the link and vote. http://yoursay.sa.gov.au/ideas/take-me-to-the-river-fishing-education-for-riverland-youth

    A little about the event.

Take Me to the River - Fishing education for Riverland Youth

    Problem we're solving
Providing life skills not previously learnt, such as different fishing techniques and how to improve and maintain the local environment. Encouraging young people to get outdoors and meet other like-minded individuals. All of this will help generate a sense of community possibly not already experienced and build self-confidence where it previously may have been lacking.

    How we're solving it:
Organised and structured events at different locations on the lower Murray river. Members of the Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club would hold talks and demonstrations on native fish and their ecology, sustainable fishing, care for the environment and habitat restoration. Club members would also take local youths out fishing in their boats for the day. Donations of equipment and gear to all participants.

    Indeed, nice one

Half doz or so blokes up on the fishing platform when i arrived at round 2115.

Quick G'day to Kelvin and i netted mine from the platform's footings just below.

1/4-1/3 a 10lt bucket in 35min. Took me longer to get there than collect what i wanted!

Easier than cockling and didnt even get wet.  1000s were just floating right past the rocks at your feet. A most satifying 1st time worming session.

A pleasant evening, not all cold, farily calm and gentle winds. Beat staying home watching on TV.

Recon ive 'saved' $300 based on the price i paid for a little tub at the tackle shop last week .

After having a lot of success last snapper season using jigs and switchblades and with this weather not allowing much fishing time I hit the shed to make up a new assortment of micro jigs. I came up with my own idea of using old salmon lures, old lucanus style jigs, and plastic squid to make up the jig.

The plastic squid retail at $2:95 per pack for 5. A pack of decent jig assist hooks are also cheap as the quality only needs to be good enough for big snapper. I used Williamson assist hooks, but as per one of the pics you can also just use standard 8/0 suicides and 80lb leader to form your own assist hook. Add in a few split rings and youre in business. Each of the jigs below range from 70g through to 100g. I prefer them heavy as I fish deep drops for reds and heavier jigs allow you to 'bounce' the jig along the bottom and get it down easier in stronger tides.

The metal part of the jig (salmon lure) doesn't need to be anything fancy, as it only acts as the weight to get it down.. it's the squid with the hook that does the damage.

I've found that these work best for drifting across the drop. My technique is to firstly use the sounder to find the fish, then once they appear on the screen cast the jig up drift of the fish. This will allow the jig time to sink. I then simply bounce the jig along the bottom through the school. Usually it gets taken on the drop as it's bounced along the bottom.

Snapper tend to fight much harder if the boat is drifting, not anchored. They can petty much free swim when drifting instead of being yanked into the current.

Here's a few pics of the jigs both on the table and how they would appear in the water. Add in a light rod, 10lb braid and hang on!

As light as possible for bream 4-6 lb mainline with 6 lb fluoro leader i use...an smallest hooks possible..very finicky fish those bream... As for trouties..slightly bigger hooks as they hav big mouth for there size..an good place to start bait wise for both is whitebait..

light threadline outfit, 7 foot rod, 6lb braid or lighter if you can. Trace from 4lb to 10lb. 2 inch or 2 inch gulp minnow size jig head about 1/8 or lighter. Cast out and slow retrieve. Sometimes you need to follow the school.

Or bait, pilchard cube, half pilchard, whitebait. No or very light sinker, 8lb trace and a longer rod to cast the lighter bait.
Hook size to match the bait. Size 6 for whitebait upto 2/0 for 1/2 pilchards. You should get plenty of distance with a pilchard chunk,.

Fish right near the end, watch the locals.

Here is a photo I took moments before i got hit with the front that came in this afternoon!

Love how there was such dark clouds rolling in yet you still see the sun as it was setting.

And shows the roughness of the water!

This looks even better at the true resolution however due to the site only allowing 4.88mb max pics i got to shrink it down to fit!
