I'm going to smoke this big piece of mackeral this arvo in the BBQ with the lid down. I get some really good smoke off the solid plate.

Been brining for 48 hrs now drying off in the fridge.

If it tastes good I'll let you know. If it is crap I will never mention it again.

The lead in old batteries will mostly be in the form of lead oxide and lead suphates. I think you have to melt it with carbon or something to extract pure lead suitable for sinkers. Plus there is lead sludge in there as well. There is a bit on the web about this and the consensus is it is not worth it.

A mate of mine, much older than me, and a very long time ago, found a very large number (100+) of old batteries that had been dumped illegally out in the scrub. They thought of sinkers or selling the lead so they poured all the acid out and restacked the batteries. Then, as you do in the '70s, they set fire to the pile to burn the plastic off. He reckoned there was bugger all lead left that had melted into pools.

Bi carb of soda will neutralise the acid.

Great in one word. Comes out nearly like a oven roast chook

I've used boiling water poured over the chicken skin to help make it more crispy.  The skin tends to pull back a little but remember to dry it with paper towel before putting it in the smoker.

A before and after pic of today's smoke up, with a dry rub on the chicken and snags with just a quick sprinkle of salt

Forgot to add. One of the things brining does for me is that is puts that nice "skin" on the fish when I pat them dry and leave them in the fridge for a day of so. This "skin" seems to keep the fillets a bit more moist.

I was scratching my head reading this topic over the last couple of weeks. Googled "Dry Brining" without effect and you know, too proud to ask. Wondering what this method is. Then it hit me - you are just lightly salting them! When did salting become "Dry Brining"    Best oxymoron I've seen recently

I fish 4pound most of the time sometimes 8 pound leader at the most. I don't have to retie many leaders mate but when I do need to change one I end up doing a double Uni and find they tend to catch the guides more and break more often
If I can tie the fg easily while out there then I wouldn't have to worry about as many
I also tie my lures rather than using clips so sometimes a leader change is needed due to needing more rather than breaking them off

I have a thunnus CI4 4000 and a stradic CI4+ 3000. Have caught 10kg tuna on the thunnus and fish up to 2 kg on the stradic. No problems on either. No frame flex from what I can tell. The stradic is a great little reel.

I'd be getting your tommy and gar gear ready, especially burley, and fish for snook incidentally. When tommies and gar are around I find often that the snook often hang around further out. Can usually snag one or two on soft plastics

Try and find anyone who is right handed and winds an overhead with their left hand. There is your answer. And we have bigger fish, pump the rod up with both arms, right hand to spinning reel handle then grind away, repeat.

Don't listen to me. The first decent spinning reel I ever owned (my second) was a shim baitrunner I got for my 40th six years ago. Prior to that all overheads. So I cannot wind a reel with my left hand worth a damn. I gave it a go for a day and ended up with RSI like symptoms. I tried because casting over and over and swapping over is inefficient. I can absolutely see why chucking SP all day for Bream winding with your left makes sense. I don't do much of that type of fishing. If you bottom bash catching snaps and kgw it really doesn't matter much - to me. Plus I'm too old to change

Like Mr Fish I have only used black magic in 15 and 30 lb so don't have a solution!

But both are hard to get a knot to tie up nicely without grabbing. Sometimes they grab and knot up too early and you can't shift the knot. I don't like using it for this reason and am still getting through the two spools I bought. I switched back to normal mono for leader mostly. If their is a supple one that ties well i might be tempted to use it for flicking small HB and SPs over coral bombies at the end of the year so will wath this topic closely.

Switch is used for what is called "backreeling". A useful technique in flowing rivers where line and lure are allowed to move back in the flow to drop into a new pocket behind a rock or eddy for example. Gives the salmon fishers more control when "hotshotting".
