Mr_Willy 3
You would think someone would proof read this stuff... I guess though its probably not a priority for them as I wouldn't think anyone would buy the paper specifically for the fishing reports...
Rollas 2
Maybe they followed the trawlers in after they push all the by catch back in off the trays....

jaffa 81
Hey ppl, don`t know if it`s true or not but it could be. My old man & I used to catch them on our snook lines in the vicinity of the "Southwest Ground" many years ago when I was a youngster. Also used to catch them near the Orontes Beacon around Xmas, also on snook lines. (40+ years ago but) Cheers all..
urhookedfish 12
My grandad used to get em at outer harbour as well so maybe either he has   written the report thinking its still 1970 something or they are putting out there 70's retro fishing report. rangfish 1
They could be a school of Longtail Tuna but I don't know what they would be doing so far south, I have heard reports of Longtail in SA before but it is very rare.
Jack. 10
Has to be a typo, because there are good sized SALMON out there at the moment... Fishie 98
You can also catch the odd Balmain or Moreton Bay Bugs out here in the Gulf... I can't remember which ones they are, but I know a few people who have caught them over the years
Fishie 98
SARDI have just released a report on the BugsHere's a link www.sardi.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0018/135531/No_439_By-Product_Assessment_in_the_Spencer_Gulf_Prawn_Fishery_with_an_emphasis_on_developing_management_options_for_Balmain_Bugs.pdf urhookedfish
bent87 0
It's got to be crap. Sorry- for them to report them in that column it means they have been landed- unless someone LAUNCHED at outer harbour and cruised over to Wedge Island i am sceptical until proven wrong- would love to be wrong in this case. O2Catch1 170
I was out deep off NH a few weeks back with a mate and his friend and just before sunset we saw a number of "fish" jumping, at first I said they must be dolphins but we went towards them and they were about a metre long, definitely not dolphins, very dark on the top and light underneath. One of the guys with us called them excitably as tuna, he has targeted and caught tuna before but not out off here of course. Me, I have never seen tuna before but he was pretty sure they were and they sure loked like fish to me. We were about 200 - 250 metres from them when they stopped jumping.Like some have said, anything is possible. Fishie
jaffa 81
@ firefly, don`t have to go to Pondie area for dolphin fish / mahi mahi either, one was caught at Goannas on a snook line summer before last, also have personally seen a massive school of them up that way, that ended up in commercial nets near Pt. Wakefield. Cheers.

Fishie 98
Thanks for the detailed info O2 and Carps..... let's hope it's true as I've always longed for the Tuna to return back to migrating up through this Gulf since the early 70's

But surely it would only be one small breakaway school that would probably get decimated or spooked pretty quick wouldnt they making them really really hard to catch??
Fishie 98
Anyone lucky enough to see them don't motor straight through them and spook them down deep.... just slowly circle them to keep them in a tight ball up on the surface. there's nothing more frustrating than locating a school of salmon and keeping them tight only for some wally to come along and go straight through the school and wreck it for everyone... same goes for the Tuna
O2Catch1 170
In our case fishie, the guy who was certain they were tuna jumping was screaming for a lure but unfortunately we were in a boat that did not have anything suitable and anyway the fish disappeared before we could get ourselves organised.
